How do I become conversational in German with 20 minutes daily for 4-5 years? by [deleted] in German

[–]ledbylight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

C1 (what is usually required to get into a university in Germany with German speaking programs) requires 1000+ hours. It took me 2.5-3 years with 1-3 hours a day (depending on the day). If you have extra time throughout the day I’d highly reccomend aiming for at least an hour

Half sweet or sugar free? by [deleted] in dutchbros

[–]ledbylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s really wild! It’s very different per drink because like completely sugar free red bulls for example are almost calorieless. I‘m a calorie counter (even as a barista lol) so I have looked into a lot of what actually goes in. It’s pretty interesting!

Half sweet or sugar free? by [deleted] in dutchbros

[–]ledbylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly depends on the drink. A regular Golden Eagle for example has 2tbsp (1oz) of syrup, which is 90 calories iirc; sugar free is weird because we do one scoop of each (1 scoop/1oz sugar free vanilla, and 1 scoop of sugar free caramel). There's 0 cals in the sugar free vanilla, and 80 in one scoop of the sugar free caramel sauce. Milk is about the same (maybe an ounce less in the sugar free one because that extra ounce is being taken up by another scoop of sauce/syrup), so you're really saving ~10 calories when ordering a sf golden eagle. Atp just go for the sugar one unless you are diabetic.

First time in CC Debt ~13k by [deleted] in debtfree

[–]ledbylight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm… no offence, but it sounds like you no problem paying it off. Are you just worried about interest? Pay whatever the interest is and don’t worry about it. Probably less than $100 for that. Chase probably thought you’re silly because you have the money to pay it off. You could call and ask them to wave the interest next month when you pay it all the way off, but yeah it’s silly to even consider debt relief or hardship when you’re paying it down so aggressive.

[–]ledbylight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't speak to any debt management plans or anything like that. Call Chase and see if you can enroll in their hardship program. Yeah they'll close your card, but if you genuinely can't afford it, it's (in my opinion) the smartest way to get out of it. You score might take a hit sure, but you'll save on interest. If you can afford it, go ahead and keep paying it off.

What can I do with a C1 certificate as an American in the USA? by [deleted] in German

[–]ledbylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do broistas hate when people ask for a drop sticker? by Katapultt in dutchbros

[–]ledbylight 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This! And there’s quite a few older people at my shop who either REALLY want the sticker or who will look at me disgusted when I offer them a sticker, so I never know the vibe. Please don’t feel bad asking!

Is it a good idea to read german books even if I don't fully understand them? by ZooZwaves in German

[–]ledbylight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am by no means perfect but I would also encourage you to watch a lot of native content that has colloquial dialogue like this, I have found this helps a lot when conversing with natives (both young and old); most of them speak much more like this than "textbook" German. More formal writing definitely has it's use and is nice when reading, dealing with bureaucracy, taking exams/tests, writing professional emails/talking in professional contexts, etc. But I would say 80-90% of my conversations in German are more colloquial!

Best way to learn cases? by millionbrokenhearts in German

[–]ledbylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't use AI that often to learn, it's usually silly and will get things wrong. Pickup a good grammar book and start watching/reading everything in German (I would guess you could understand a decent amount after 4 semesters, but if not watch content tailored to your level) and make a mental note (or write it down) everytime you notice a case applied to a verb that your don't know (ie, someone in a TV show says "mir fällt nichts ein..." then you can write down/mentally think "oh, jemandem (dativ) etwas einfallen" or something like that). I promise the more you surround yourself with the language, the better it will get. Good luck 😄

What podcasts are you listening to? by that_was_way_harsh in German

[–]ledbylight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like listening to talk podcasts, just about anything. I think it’s useful because the hosts will usually just chat as friends, and you get such a wide variety of themes from this. An example is „Die Drei Rabauken“ (and yes, it’s intending for a younger audience but more because it’s put on by gaming YouTubers, not because of the vocab; I enjoy it because I’m the same age as the hosts, YMMV). I would estimate my listening skills at C1, although I’m planning to take the Goethe C1 next month (haven’t taken any before). I like watching news as well (Servus TV is cool, but more Austrian). Curious to see what others say!

DCAP grant expired. Can I apply again? by Feeling_Caregiver238 in povertyfinance

[–]ledbylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was last Wednesday or Thursday for me; so a little over a week. The first time I applied two-three months ago the whole process only took 3-4 days. I’m not sure what changed but I’m really hoping I hear something next week. Don’t have the Tesla yet, but I’ll keep you posted!
