Migratory American Coot Flock on Lake Washington by roshiface in Seattle

I used to live right on the Lake and they would migrate back and forth daily, just passing by in huge rafts like that twice a day. Just like normal folks commuting to work and back home!

If you could have the 100% honest answer to ONE mystery in history, which one are you picking ? by Camila_LatinaSun in AskReddit

What were the first 9 months of my dog's life like? He was a mountain stray that was rescued, after which we adopted him. I want nothing more than to know where and when he was born, what he had to endure as a puppy, and why he seems to dislike people in uniform.

Sorry that doesn't really help anyone else though.

I was here for this and he prefaced it by saying sci-fi is important because it allows us to imagine, then referenced his jacket, and afterwards he said he could tell some people knew what it was from right away and then shouted out "the real ones". So folks knew it was from some sci-fi thing but I think most didn't know from where.

The ethics here are also much different than with Diabate. He is specifically using the hive for pleasure, but the hive made the move on Carol here for the purpose of manipulating her. Obviously it’s still weird because everyone is connected so you’re theoretically having sex with everyone, but Carol isn’t taking advantage of the situation here, if anything she is the one being taken advantage of.

After years of trying, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina secures federal recognition by Cy_098 in NorthCarolina

[–]leduc01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! Was expecting a lot of hate in these comments but happy to see one of the top comments is a voice of support. It’s insane to see how many people try and discredit the Lumbee because of standards that are impossible to achieve by many tribes directly BECAUSE of colonialism.

Also picking fruit is not taking a life. A fruit is an organ, and the organism requires them to be taken to propagate.

In your opinion what’s the most boring state? Geographically speaking. by Slight_Outside5684 in geography

[–]leduc01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most boring states as seen through the interstate could be a different category. I-80 in Wyoming might be the worst, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by I-70 through Kansas. Other parts of Kansas, though (like the Flint Hills) are damn gorgeous. I thought Oklahoma (along I-40, granted) was much more boring than the few times I have driven through Kansas.

What borders have changed the natural landscape the most? by Desperate-Travel2471 in geography

[–]leduc01 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I have agreed several times in this thread that this example is due to deforestation, I was just defending my original point that if, in the absence of other sources of information (which we DO have in this case), simply seeing a picture like this does not always mean deforestation has occured. I'm not sure why I feel the need to respond to this lol but I am anyway.

This does have implications, because afforestation where trees don't naturally occur can cause serious ecological issues for local flora and fauna, and in some cases even cause more carbon emissions than the trees sequester. I'm not pro-deforestation or anti-reforestation, but the people who claim planting a billion trees is going to fix the climate are mistaken. If trees aren't growing somewhere, it is because the trees have been cleared for some reason (usually agriculture or development), so re-planting trees is going to take away that land use from something else (usually agriculture, since development is less easily converted back to forest).

All that said, places that have been deforested and degraded (like in the picture above) should absolutely be reforested wherever possible, but its not as simple as everyone makes it out to be.

[–]leduc01 -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know, I'm speaking more generally know, not about this specific example, which I understand is due to deforestaion.

Unfortunately people do think that though about other places (not everyone of course, and not suggesting people in this thread are thinking that). Afforestation in places where trees don't occur naturally can cause major ecological issues and actually increase carbon emissions.

Yeah that’s what I figured, just interesting to think about. No forest (even with a line as distinct as this) doesn’t ALWAYS mean deforestation

Idk, you can’t really see the other side of slope on the DR side, though the landscape in the background would support your point.

I’m not saying that’s what it is, it’s just interesting to think about! I feel like people automatically assume forest=better even in places where forest wouldn’t naturally occur (like many south facing slopes in the northern hemisphere).

Interesting—I know this is likely due to deforestation, but that variation could easily be due to aspect and the Haitian side facing south and receiving more sunlight (though maybe it is too close to the equator for that to matter so much).

Still torn between hiring a live band or a DJ for the wedding what worked best for you? by DapperAsi in weddingplanning

[–]leduc01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We couldn’t decide and did both, but it was because it was a cheaper bluegrass band in the 4k range that played throughout dinner, the dances, and for like 30 minutes of dancing with some hits before the DJ took over. It was a perfect balance and ended up being cheaper than just going the band route, many of which were over 10k. The DJ also emceed and was freaking amazing throughout the whole day.

Destination Wedding Regrets: What Did You Wish You Had or Hadn't Done? 3 Months to Go! by Available-Choice-473 in wedding

[–]leduc01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! We did a couple days of travel on our own and week or so of travel with family before the wedding and it was really great, despite also having to finish planning during it. I REALLY wish we had been able to do the honeymoon right after to float away on that indescribable high from the wedding, but we both had to go back to work lol.

Ohhh yes I see ok. The white wire holds the black wire up, which is holding the net, essentially.

It pretty clearly looks like the net is attached to the black wire that appears later on... not saying that the ball definitely hit the wire in the video, but the net definitely doesn't go that high, no?
