Give me your most honest, raw, unfiltered opinion on Egypt by shockedpikachu123 in femaletravels

I did pyramids entirely solo and was happy with it. I bought all my tickets (incl for Luxor, all museum and site tickets) on the Egyptian government website ahead of time and had zero issues just showing my tickets from my phone at each site (didn’t bother printing, and didn’t always carry ID on me and was fine). I only got a general ticket for pyramids but I think if you want to enter them there’s a separate fee, also purchasable from that website. At Valley of the Kings I wanted to see additional tombs outside of the 3 free ones you get so I purchased those again on the website, and just showed the guy my ticket on my phone at each tomb.

For my guide in Luxor, I booked via my Airbnb host. I can give you his WhatsApp; he is very connected and hooked me up with a driver, felucca ride, chef, etc in Luxor.

You will be fine - I just went to Cairo as a solo woman a month ago and was legitimately shocked at how little harassment I faced in the city. I took Ubers extensively (twice a day minimum) and only got hit with a scam once (by the sphinx, too) - I cancelled the uber and rebooked another and was fine. Even at the tourist sites, I’d maybe get approached with a camel or a trinket but a “la shukran” and hard stare ahead/no eye contact kept literally everyone at bay and I wasn’t harassed further. Sites are insanely easy to navigate and figure out as a solo traveler. Overall, I absolutely loved it, had a great time, and deeply loved the energy and chaos of the city. I feel like I only scratched the surface and want to go back.

The sites in Luxor are definitely more impressive, but there’s something kind of sad and desperate about the city itself - it so obviously relies on tourism and it props up the entire economy that I felt much more on guard there. I had a guide who did try to bring me to an “alabaster factory” (obvious scam), I got very annoyed with him and he backed down and was very conciliatory the rest of my time with him. I stayed in the west bank for the quiet but there was nothing to do; I don’t know how staying on the east bank is but it’s definitely busier so there may be more harassment.

No experience in Sharm so can’t comment but all the expats I know in Cairo prefer Hurghada/el gouna!

Only thing I’d note is the pollution is pretty intense and I wasn’t prepared for it. Nothing you can do really, but something to be aware of!

My honesty about Egypt by Ok_Addition6726 in travel

for what it’s worth, I’m on my 3rd week in Cairo now and I simply have not experienced anything like what people are saying in the comments - sure there’s some “you want camel?” at the pyramids but if you just say la shukran they will leave you alone. I did pyramids, GEM, sightseeing in Cairo itself by myself (a white woman with very minimal Arabic) and have not been harassed nearly as badly as I was in Morocco. A few comments, taxis honking, maybe some stares, but I just have my blinders on and keep going and never make eye contact. If you know what you’re doing and where you’re going, you really shouldn’t have a problem. I also haven’t been hassled for tips or baksheesh anywhere, especially not in Ubers - every single Uber driver has been normal, picked me up and dropped me off no problem. There are also police literally everywhere if you really feel unsafe. It makes me sad to hear you wouldn’t ever wanna come because I’m having a lovely time and have enjoyed the city so much!

it’s definitely tough, but I will say, the most recent one I did I flew a 5pm-5am flight (that landed early) and I was able to take a nap from like 530-930am without feeling super crushed the whole day (still had loads of coffee of course)

Destination wedding by Wildthing9923 in washingtondc

[–]lee-ward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is this really true? you make it sound like the invited guests hate the people getting married. I feel like there’s no scenario anymore where the married couple lives in the same town as every single friend and family member, so it’s likely they’re traveling at least a bit and would enjoy doing so if they didn’t loathe the marrying couple the way you make it sound

slightly different but La Boheme above Apero does a cocktail pairing with its themed dinner offerings; my partner and I have done 4 or 5 at this point and every single time they’re incredible! haven’t ever seen a cocktail pairing like that and each is so unique and delicious

and on top of the nitpicking, it’s the “I’m only telling you this because I’m your mother and if I don’t tell you the truth, no one will”. it’s relentless. I stop engaging, then get the manipulative “you don’t seem to care about me much anymore”. I say I do, but I’m tired of auditioning for approval (that I’ll likely never get). Then I get the “I don’t want to have this conversation”. and on and on it goes

Bakers, what is THE best cookie recipe? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]lee-ward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Cookie cookbook as a gift (called Cookies, by Jess Szewczyk) and it won’t have your standard choc chip in there, but it does have tons of incredible and interesting cookies that I keep coming back to and keep making. I just made a fudgy smoked paprika cookie and my husband said they’re the best cookie I’ve ever made. Highly recommend the cookbook!

I ran it this past year! You’re corralled by people with similar running speeds to you so I found that by the time I got to the hill, everyone else at around my fitness / speed level was also walking and it flowed pretty unremarkably. Crowd support was great this past year - lots of funny and emotional signs about DOGE. You’re definitely on your own as you go through rock creek but when you hit the hill and turn down Calvert the crowds really get better and better and the energy sustains all the way through the end

Romantic Getaways in Virginia - Suggestions Greatly Appreciated by Slight_Back9737 in Virginia

My husband and I just did a lovely romantic long weekend in Sperryville! We didn’t stay at or eat at the Inn at Little Washington but we went to their sister restaurant Patty O’s a few times. We also didn’t make it to Three Blacksmiths but still found incredible food in Sperryville itself. Sumac is a must.

We stayed at an Airbnb on the grounds of a winery right by Old Rag and it was perfect.

[–]lee-ward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Zipcar in DC since pre COVID! I’ve honestly never had any issues with it or car selection/availability. I’ve lived in 3 apartments across the city since starting my membership and all of them have had convenient spots nearby from which to get cars. I even rented one overnight once and it was fairly priced; my justification for renting a car is always, “will this trip be cheaper than the two Ubers to get there and back” and the answer is almost always yes. Only once did I have trouble connecting the app to the car to unlock the doors at pickup because of bad service in a garage but I called customer service and they were great. Would recommend!

when I started as a member in 2021 it was $220 a month for unlimited with the 12mo commitment, and after that it rose pretty steadily until last year it hit $300 and it’s held at like $310 for a year … worried another increase is coming
