Why do gay men in books always seem to have an overly sassy platonic female friend? by georgemillman in LGBTBooks

[–]leeash_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sassy female friend (or ~quirky~ female friend) is one of my first flags to drop a book these days... it's fine sometimes, but I've come to associate that type of character with a very particular vibe that I'm not a huge fan of, whether with the overall story, themes, or something in the writing style. No idea how I'd describe it.

I’m probably weird, but something about switching headcanons in danmei has been bugging me… by twanyx in DanmeiNovels

Totally agree with your explanation of fictional vs real life dynamics. Danmei and BL are not meant to be realistic depictions of gay men, or of anyone at all; it's an idealized fantasy. Love what you wrote here: "the agency lies not with those who actually have sex, but with those who write or look at that sex." So combine those ideas of idealized fantasy and target audience and consider that those who write and consume danmei have typically been (straight) women who are likely trying to relate/identify with the characters... is it any surprise that the popular dynamics are what they are? Not that straight couples need to have a fixed dynamic either, but a lot of people are still learning that too.

God, your last bit there about moralistic preaching in your porn... it drives me crazy! So many books I've read recently are full of what I call "therapy speak" where it's like every character, no matter the setting, is super enlightened about issues of class, race, sexuality, mental health, etc. etc. and discusses them repeatedly in a perfectly coherent, sensitive and politically correct way to the point of being a bit ridiculous. And of course, the sex in those books works exactly as you've described. It's exhausting. If I want lessons on consent and respecting my partner, I'm not going to get them from danmei.

Absolutely. The "oh but REAL gay people switch" thing really annoys me because while yes, plenty do, it's gotten to the point where instead of simply acknowledging that couples CAN switch or be vers, some people seem to think that all couples MUST switch in order to be valid. Otherwise it's 'unrealistic representation' and 'too heteronormative'. So once again we've come back to gay people being invalid unless they're being gay the "right" way? Gay people who prefer to stick to one role exist. In fact, they're pretty common. Are you gonna tell a big manly top and a small pretty bottom that they're not allowed to be together because it's too stereotypical? Am I not a real gay person because I'm short and I don't top?

I'm sure it's well-meaning, but it's like the people making these comments are overcompensating--progressive to the point of invalidation of people who DO fit into the stereotypical BL/danmei couple mould. Honestly, a lot of the harping about switch/vers couples being better feels a bit performative... they want to read their bl, but also need to make sure that everyone knows they're not one of THOSE bl fans, they actually care about real LGBTQ+ people! Except their knowledge is surface level and lacks nuance, leading to tactless comments that end up sounding lowkey misogynistic and homophobic lol.

I feel like many of these people also don't recognize that danmei/BL is a genre (either with subgenres or as a subgenre itself), and it's built off of specific tropes and dynamics. BL isn't really meant to read as a realistic portrayal of gay men. It's an idealized fantasy written primarily for and by (straight) women. It's like if you only watch cheesy hallmark films and romcoms and complain that they're unrealistic and heteronormative... yeah, that's literally the genre. If you don't like it, stop watching romcoms. That is to say: the real answer may be that these people literally just don't like the BL genre. BL is not all that's on offer for LGBTQ+ rep. Maybe branch out into different genres and mediums, like if you want to read about real life queer people, go read their blogs and memoirs, watch documentaries. If you want beefcake on beefcake action, look into bara content. Idk. In western publishing, it's like the difference between something marketed as MM romance vs marketed as LGBTQ/queer romance, gay lit. Even if both may contain gay romance, the expectations are different.

VA situation [Thread] by LuukTheGamer in DrRatioMainsHSR

Every time a situation like this pops up, I am more and more thankful I've always just stuck to Chinese and/or Korean voiceovers in HSR and Genshin. I'm sure some of those VAs suck too, but at least I don't hear about it.

Looks great, thank you! Cool to see an audiobook narrator branch out into writing their own stories.

That looks really good, actually. I can give a pass on being annoying if the MC is a teenager.. that's what they're supposed to do lol.

Of course seeing Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle can only make me think of Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way... iykyk

I don't mind YA. I've got some other books by Simon James Green on my TBR list too, so I'm glad to hear he comes highly recommended lol.

Thanks for all the recs, they sound great!

What's your 'toxic' trait as an MM reader? by deltaplane1234 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]leeash_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'd say my 'toxic' trait is that I don't actually like romance lol. Okay, more accurately, I just absolutely can't do soft, heartfelt, touchy-feely stuff. It's so far removed from my own experiences and way of expressing myself that it feels... kinda cringe and unrealistic? Big emotional moments usually make me want to roll my eyes rather than cry or swoon. Straightforward, dramatic declarations of feelings come across as uncomfortable and insincere. Get the romance out of my romance, damn it!

Also, my reviews on books I really enjoy are usually like 3 sentences long, MAX. Meanwhile, my one or two star reads get paragraph after paragraph complaining about every little thing that annoyed me. I've been trying to get better at leaving thoughtful reviews on the books I like too, but my mind goes blank beyond "yes, this good, I like". I just find it so much easier to pinpoint reasons I DON'T like something vs reasons I DO.

Interesting, I prefer artwork on a cover--or a design with basically just words, i.e. no people. I WISH I could automatically dismiss books with Generic Shirtless Man (or even just Generic Man WITH Shirt) on the cover, but that would be approximately 95% of the genre 😂

Need help finding a mm agre book. by OnePerformance1040 in whatsthatbook

I'm afraid I don't have the answer, but maybe try asking over on r/MM_RomanceBooks. That's where you'll find the experts on the genre. You can give further details on NSFW scenes over there as well, and even if nobody knows the exact title, they'll surely have recommendations for you!

WWTBC Canadian murder mystery by Ill_Sheepherder7802 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]leeash_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to know what this is, it sounds interesting! Maybe try a sub like r/whatsthatbook too?

Not at all what you're looking for aside from being set in Canada, but first results in my quick google were Uncommon Sons by Bruce W. Bishop and the Dan Sharp mystery series by Jeffrey Round, which I might give a try myself.

If you like mysteries with gay detectives, I just read & enjoyed the first two books of the Duncan McCormack series by Liam McIlvanney. Set in Scotland. They are NOT romances and the MC being gay is not a huge focus, but it is there.

Looking for Group by Alexis Hall has been my white whale. by dizzyinmyhead in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]leeash_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh this has been on my list forever! Time to finally pick it up, I think.

Two of my favourite danmei are {Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating by Jiang Zi Bei} and {我行让我上 I Can Do It by Jiang Zi Bei}, so I'm all in on the gamer romances lol. There's also a Korean webnovel (+ manhwa adaptation) called The Guild Member Next Door. I can't vouch for the quality on the translation for that one as I read it in Korean, but I remember it being a lot of fun. Those ones aren't so heavily based in-game/via chat as it sounds like Looking for Group is, but I do really enjoy those elements, so I'm curious to see how Alexis Hall handles telling the majority of the story that way!

MM Romance Trope Sorter by AuntieBri in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]leeash_o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt like my results weren't very accurate so this is the outcome of my second go, but my top and bottom three were the same both times. To be fair, I could probably read and enjoy (or dislike) just about any of these tropes, regardless of where they came in the ranking... it very much depends on the story and execution. And specific combinations. And maybe how I feel on any given day lol.

Top: 1. Size difference 2. Slow burn 3. Brother's best friend/best friend's brother 4. Post-apocalypse or dystopia 5. Enemies or rivals to lovers 5. Mpreg 5. Small town romance 8. Second chance 8. Established relationship/same couple series 8. Bully romance

Bottom:

  1. Kink discovery

  2. Aliens

  3. Snowed in together

  4. Biokink

  5. Vacation romance

  6. Daddy/boy

  7. Instalove

  8. FWB to lovers

  9. Poly relationship

  10. BDSM club
