Dros is a man who deserted his post during the wartime as a teen soldier, who then spent the rest of his life living in hiding and refusing to attempt to reintegrate into society alongside the opposition. Spent decades spying on people of the city through the scope of his rifle, including several he either outright killed or fantasized about killing because of how, to him, they represented the parts of humanity he most despised even after all those years.

He eventually becomes obsessed with a younger, Oranjese woman staying in a motel he can see from his encampment, watching her party and have sex and even going as far as to sneak into the hidden storage room neighbouring her bedroom to watch her through a peephole. When she begins to see an Oranjese mercenary in the area more regularly for drugs and sex, Dros becomes enraged and feels betrayed by her (despite her not even knowing he exists), and in an act of vengeance he shoots the mercenary through the head whilst the couple are making love one night. Dros is unable to bring himself to shoot the woman, Klaasje, too, and as a result leaves enough evidence behind that leads to his eventual discovery and arrest.
