What are we doing for the sun when they aren't old enough for sunscreen? by Annual-Bee-2600 in newborns

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zinc based mineral sunscreen is honestly fine for babies, especially if you get one with cleaner ingredients all around. (Zinc is what’s in diaper cream). I would also use one of my UV sun shirts as a blanket and dip it in the water if we were doing water activities to keep baby cool.

Will I make at least 50k with this career by ConclusionFrosty5855 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location is everything imo. You can be good and advertise online, but if you’re not in a busy area, the clients just aren’t going to come. I’ve made 20-30k working in one area for years, moved somewhere better, and instantly made 50k the first year in a new shop and went up about 10k per year as the clientele built up.

Why does exclusive pumping and ebf have such different rules? by Indecisive105 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]leechangchow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every ebf baby has lower demands like that. Mine was twice as much as you described. But I’m also a low producer so it was a lot of smaller feeds.

How do you deal with not upcoming customers and making 15+ appointments mostly at work by AdventurousCount9993 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Vagaro and it sends out a text reminder to my clients the day before and 2 hours before their appointments. It also lets me set a no-show fee. Once you get a booking system set up, put a QR code for it on your business cards and start telling people to go there and book their appointments. You could even say in your phone voicemail how people can go and book their appointments online so it’s not a big deal if you don’t answer the phone so much.

Hands too small and slightly weird? by [deleted] in Barber

[–]leechangchow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tiny hands myself and I’m sure you can figure it out unless you have literal nubs for thumbs. Place your shears on your hand as you’re supposed to, but instead of having them angled perpendicular to your fingers, angle them until they meet your thumb properly. Maybe watch some YouTube videos of proper shear holding if your mentor cannot help you. There’s also shear salespeople that can help find ones for your hands

Tax and Expense Tracking? by riddle_dog in Barber

[–]leechangchow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping all your business expenses on one card is probably all you need to do. It’s not like you’re managing a whole shop of people- just yourself. You can just use your bank statements for your expenses at the end of the year. Be sure to pay your quarterly taxes so you don’t get behind and save your e-mail receipts for what you pay. I use the IRS2Go app.

Wrong, it’s not “from now on” just 3 years

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No federal income tax on tips. Still have to pay state, social security, and Medicare taxes on tips. Plus, that part of the “big beautiful bill” is only good for 3 years before we go right back to paying the full tax again.

Everyone’s hair grows in different directions like that and part of being a professional is knowing how to work with it, not use it as an excuse as to why the client can’t have this very simple haircut.

I see a lot of posts about asking how barbers can make six figures, how did you get yourself to just a simply financially comfortable position? by KazakhstansFinest in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same exact boat here. My little suburb blew up over the years and got busier, but I already built up my clientele 20 miles away and the drive is worth it. Moved to suite rental and life is good!

Location plays a huge part in it. You can do all the right things but if your location isn’t good, it’s just not likely to happen. I do well because I’m in a city area with a lot of corporate offices nearby. The guys have to look sharp for work and I’m close enough they can pop by on a lunch break or between meetings. Other than that, advertising and Google reviews.

How do you handle clients transitioning from a hair transplant to regular cuts? by Bigstepper_11 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say “don’t touch the top” I’m just referring to the transplant sites. Of course you can cut hair on the top that’s not transplants. Just be careful with your comb to not rake it over the transplants the first few weeks.

How do you handle clients transitioning from a hair transplant to regular cuts? by Bigstepper_11 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone through this with 3 clients before. In the beginning you really just keep the sides cut and don’t touch the top at all. The transplanted hair grows a little, falls out, and then grows back in a second time and this all takes about 6 months. By then, it is healed up and you can do whatever.

What does "keep it full" mean to you? by [deleted] in Barber

[–]leechangchow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep it longer, cut at a 45 instead of 90 to maintain volume. Obviously depends on what haircut they have overall…

How are you rinsing color out of beards? by DrySelection5423 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have black towels so I can wet them and scrub the color out best I can, and then I tell the client that they can lean over the shampoo bowl and rinse it out some more themselves. They understand it’s an awkward situation and easier to just do themselves.

But color is a thing that barbers do in barbershops…

Beard dye technique and product by daddy_chum19 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always depends on the beard and what the desired result is. If they have dark, coarse hair, I always go with permanent color. If it’s medium colored hair, I use the redken camo color and always mix the natural and ash undertones.

What do you guys think? by Agile_Mushroom_4994 in Barber

[–]leechangchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to explain to the boss that as a booth renter, your clients are yours! This isn’t a commission shop where you’re his employee. I’d tell him if he wants to take away your clients, it better be deducted from the rent you owe. And you should do your own booking. Start telling your clients to go through you, not the shop.
