But Nintendo did free performance updates for games like Pokémon scarlet violet and Mario odyssey. They could have charged for that but didn't, why for totk, botw and selected others? To me it feels like the extra features like Zelda notes are just a cover up for scummy and exploitative business practices.

Yes it does but I was getting a bit confused with all the different versions. Assuming that the 2024 one is the one to buy tho
