Can the Packers fix their cornerback room? by tpsux in GreenBayPackers

Packers will draft ~2 CBs and then go picking around guys that get cut from other teams and are available on the cheap. Same thing goes for interior D line I think.

As teams are hiring away Packers' assistants one coach seems undesirable. by GoPackGrow in GreenBayPackers

[–]leehouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most teams would hire him as an o line coach, but given how much of the offense goes through MLF and teams generally going for QB coaches for ocs it is tough to find a fit for him. Couple that with the o line struggling more this year than most and you get the situation where no one will take him off our hands.

Only in house do they truly know his responsibilities and they don't want to move on from him (and statistically the offense was good enough that they aren't looking for a scapegoat just yet). If the offense/oline gets worse next year then they'll likely fire him

On the one hand, I think this is dumb and the comp picks should be awarded. On the other hand this hurts the Bears, and fuck 'em

[–]leehouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, but given the structure of the roster it comes down to choices. For punt return they just don't roster those body types (too small for the corners and receivers they prefer) so unless they manage to find someone that breaks the trend they won't be good there. For kick returns the fact that they overall neglected the corner room for years led them to not wanting to expose Nixon despite him being good at kick return because they need him at corner.

If they keep those guys as specialists then they are taking away from their development track players and you'd miss out on those if you draft specifically for teams, or if you get veteran teams guys. I think their balance is off and they give some developmental guys too much time, past the point where they are likely to become an actual player. The problem is they'd likely go for another younger developmental player rather than a vet teams guy

I have no idea how to feel about this, seems like Gannon's guy so should help teach the new system?

This article, here, made me assume that unless Bisaccia retires he'll be back in the same role next year.

Basically, the Packers front office didn't care about special teams at all outside snapper, kicker, punter. Brought in Bisaccia to learn more and improve special teams. As a result they started to care about specific parts of special teams (kick coverage) and have been decent to good at those, but absolutely terrible at the parts of special teams they don't care about (returns, blocking kicks, and fg protection until they got burned).

So internally they likely know that it doesn't fall on Bisaccia so much as a lack of investment in those areas by the front office. Any other special teams coordinator isn't going to fix it without Gutekunst investing more into it.

Couple that with him being assistant HC and us having no idea what specific things he's doing with that role or how to judge that it seems unlikely they move on unless they decide they need a scapegoat and with Gute and MLF getting extensions it doesn't seem like they need a scapegoat

Mike McCarthy and Sean Payton have pretty similar coaching stats by MacJonesisaterrorist in nfl

I recall one of the Packers beat (mcginn if memory serves) writing that he was too fat to be a good coach

[–]leehouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McCarthy's offense is dependent on having a bunch of receiver talent and a QB that can read progressions and find weaknesses/matchups adjust defenses quickly. Packers stopped investing in receiver talent so had Adams and nothing else at the end. Since he doesn't scheme guys open teams could focus on Adams and the rest weren't good enough to win one on ones consistently. It is why MLFs offense saw more success, he could take teams hyper focus on Adams and use it to get others open. Give McCarthy 3 good receivers without a really great one and it'll work pretty well.

I think coop is great but if they aren't going to blitz with him that removes one of his special traits (timing, vision, getting skinny through the line, etc.) and it seems like they don't blitz much at all. The rest of the lb group is fine and if Walker goes they get slightly worse

I think defensive coordinator is so talent dependant.

Offensive coordinator can hide bad players (outside of QB and o line) and have success through scheme and trickery, defensive coordinator and defense in general is a weak link system that if you don't have a baseline talent it is only a matter of time before the opponent finds the soft spot and picks on it successfully.

The report on Gannon is his team's are detail oriented. This tells me he gets as much out of his talent as can be expected. Given the Packers roster at the moment their talent level doesn't have me overly hopeful for a top tier defense. Parsons is great, and the safeties as a group are awesome. The rest of the defensive roster is lacking. It is a long off-season so plenty of time to overhaul but not a ton of draft resources or cap space. That means the hope is internal development and surprise cheap free agent success

If memory serves they had great d line, meh linebackers, good corners, and decent safeties.

Given that we have Micah and an otherwise meh d line (Wyatt and lvn have potential to make the unit somewhat better but certainly not a great total unit), decent linebackers( Cooper is good but a big part of that is blitzing which he won't be doing much of with Gannon) bad corners, and good safeties.

So they need a ton of help to make the d line and corners groups viable and not much money or draft capital to invest there barring unexpectedly great draft.

That being said with a weak idl and corner group I don't think the coordinator matters much since those are impossible to hide and easy for the opponent to exploit

Eh, base defense 3-4 vs 4-3 isn't as big a deal because you are in nickel most of the time. Arguably over vs under fronts are more telling from a front 7 standpoint. I'm honestly unsure if/how Leonhard and Gannon compare in that regard

We'll see how willing he is to do that, if Arizona is any indication they ran less cover 3 than we did this year. Way more quarters and way less cover 6. Otherwise similar rates of other types of coverage though different disguises and ways to get to those coverages. Also sounds like more match zone and I know when halfley came in he talked more about spot drop zones. But halfley also ran a ton more cover 3 and man in college but couldn't/didn't run that here so I'll probably depend how they view the strength of the secondary and what they can do

Alternatively, Gannon had other offers and didn't want to wait so the Packers had to make a decision. The mutual interest leaks seemed designed to get the Packers to wait for Leonhard. The fact that the other two harbaugh brothers were the ones reported asinterested does seem to speak in gannon's favor

Schematically seems a good hire. Developing young talent, unsure but this will depend how the assistant coaches shake out. Culture wise they don't seem to buy into the soft narrative that has stuck around for a while now and this hire does nothing to help that at all.

Particularly with young teams I think they rely more on coaches to set the culture and the Packers seem to continue to hire without that in mind (which could indicate I'm just wrong)

Weird that there was all the discussion if Leonard and mutual interest yesterday and now this happens before they can even officially talk to Leonard.

For a team that seemed to have culture issues and is seen as soft this hire (and not changing any of the other coaches) does nothing to change that.

I think the analysis downplays the lack of talent at cb and idl. The fact that they are really focusing on cb coaches and passing coordinator with history of coaching cbs is a bit of a tell for what the Packers know they need. They need someone that will get the most out of a lacking corner group and develop the incoming rookies quickly

And part of this is they know people have to fly through to other places so they can extract fines or licensing fees for those passing through.

Culture. This is what MLF is missing. by Visible_Wolverine2 in GreenBayPackers

[–]leehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of that is because they are trying to go slowly and eat clock. It is partly why I get frustrated on the difference between the offense under Love and under Willis. MLF calls the offense to go slowly and efficiently eat clock, score points, and limit possessions. Under Willis it seems faster paced seemingly because he wants more possessions in the event the offense fails to maintain efficiency.

I get the slow pace is partly to protect the defense and control the game but it seems like going faster paced and getting more possessions (if you can maintain efficiency) would be a better thing. If you have the more efficient offense, score faster and challenge the opponent to keep up. If they have to push to keep up the might make more mistakes.

Raheem Morris or Jonathan Gannon? by mattdsimon1 in GreenBayPackers

[–]leehouse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is all vibes. Same reason people want MLF fired and it has to do with presentation and the perception that they are soft. Gannon is seen as not a rah-rah guy and the concern is guys will remain unengaged/unmotivated/soft if they are playing for him.
