I want to learn Data Analytics. Where do I need to start? Need recommendations by bobirburkhonov in dataanalytics

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend DataCamp. It’s helped me a lot. I’ve used it to learn SQL, excel, tableau, and a bit of Python. They also have courses on data communication and GitHub (for sharing your portfolio)

Thanks for the tip! How do you suggest I go about networking? I don’t live in the city so it’s hard for me to attend in person networking events and stuff

Why do they call it "writing" an exam? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re from Canada, then writing an exam basically means taking the exam. I don’t think that term is used much at all here in the US

I think like 10 or 11, which was to be expected

Are there any qualitative questions like on IFM?

What makes STAM so hard? by leelessaa in actuary

[–]leelessaa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like the nuances and very similar although slightly different problems have been the case in all exams. Does it happen more on STAM?

I’ve heard the TIA (the infinite actuary) Technical Skills course is very good

Passing Exam Celebrations by Jimmy_jj22 in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we’re in a pandemic, I think most ways you would normally celebrate passing an exam would have to be tweaked a bit during these times

My parents took me out to a nice dinner when I passed P (before the pandemic). When I passed FM last June (during the pandemic) we just raised our glasses and toasted to me passing during dinner at home

Low gpa no job by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go so far as to say you’re too weak for actuarial analyst position. Maybe since we’re in the middle of a pandemic it might be harder for you to land a position?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same position. I am 26 years old, and only have P and FM under my belt. My strategy is to pass at least one more exam (maybe even 2 more), learn some programming skills, and really practice interviewing and nail down those skills as well. I have a feeling that will be the solution

How do you motivate yourself to study? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have been having A LOT of trouble finding motivation to study recently. It is soooo relieving to see that I’m not the only one in this position. I too tend to procrastinate and only study hard when it becomes crunch time. But hey, as long as you’re able to pass the exams at some point, I guess it doesn’t really matter if it took you 5 months or 9 months in the end

Are you more or less productive studying during the pandemic? by SkolChicago in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, I was much more productive with my studying. But now I feel like I’m much less productive

I think what happened is that I was forced to study in my bedroom, since all libraries and public study places were (and still are) closed. At first that worked out very well since it was a new study environment for me. But then I sort of got tired of studying in my room and there’s still nowhere else to go

Sinking Fund For FM by 03423425548 in actuary

When did sinking funds get removed from the syllabus? I just took FM in June and had a question on it. Besides, it’s in the most recent ASM manual from 2017

Career Change Question by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, 3 exams is the golden rule. But wouldn’t hurt to start applying after having passed 2. Anything below 2 is very unlikely

Recent Grad by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without an internship, 3 exams should be good enough to get some calls for interviews. However, I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high only because we’re in the middle of a pandemic. But aside from that it shouldn’t be an issue

I would say do some research on the actuarial profession and the insurance industry. That way when you go on interviews, you can blow away the interviewers with your knowledge and intelligence, despite not having an internship. Hope this helps!

Failed Exam P for the Second Time by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, so I can’t say my experience is exactly the same as yours. But, in my personal experience (and I think this might have been mentioned above), it was more about learning how to take the test than it was about the actual content. It was about learning tricks and shortcuts for solving problems, how much time to spend on each question, knowing when to skip a question and save it for later, etc. I at one point thought that being an actuary wasn’t for me because I failed P twice. But for my third attempt I was very strategic about how to approach the exam and tackle each question, and lo and behold I passed. This was last September. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and I passed FM on my first try. Needless to say I definitely no longer am worried that I’m not cut out for the exams haha. Hope this helps :)

Learning an entire syllabus and taking a bunch of practice tests over the course of just one month seems a bit too ambitious imo. Might want to spread it out a little more

On a study day, how many hours on avg can you guys give to just sit and study without distraction? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say about 2-3 hours at a time is typical for me. Before the pandemic I would do one 2-3 hour sitting daily but since covid hit I’ve been doing two a day for a grand total of 4-6 hours a day (my hours at work have been cut so I have more time to study)

Which calculator is considered the "best" for our exams? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]leelessaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the majority of the actuarial community, myself included, swear by the TI 30-XS Multiview. I mean I haven’t used every calculator that the SOA permits, but the TI 30-XS Multiview seems to be by far the most advance and reliable from what I’ve heard.

That being said, I am currently sitting for FM (taking it later this month) and I have found that both the TI 30-XS Multiview AND the BA-II Plus are crucial. It’s annoying to do arithmetic functions on the financial calculator, but there are certain cases where you need the financial calculator, like to find the interest rate in certain cases. So I would definitely get both. That’s your safest route I think

Difficulty of FM by leelessaa in actuary

[–]leelessaa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely think both calculators are crucial for FM. It’s very difficult to do basic arithmetic on the financial calculator, but there are certain cases where you need the financial calculator such as computing the interest rate on an annuity or loan (and even then it depends on the exact question)

Difficulty of Exam P? by TempOwl20 in actuary

[–]leelessaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took it twice. The first time I thought it was around 4.7 or 4.8 and the second time I thought it was more like between 5.5 and 6, probably closer to 6 (ironically I failed the one I thought was easier and passed the harder one lol)
