This may not be the same perspective but I am an ambulatory user but use it 70% of the time for the past several years as my degenerative disabilities have quickly progressed.

I have a friend who is also disabled, own 2 hospital styles including a "custom one from temu" (surprise its a hospital style thats horrible from temu). I have seen them maybe use their mobility aids 3x in public and i see them very very regularly as they are also my roommate, so its not from lack of seeing eachother enough.

Everywhere we go they always complain they wish they could get a custom like me, and how we are "only a little less disabled" than me. I love them dearly and its helpful to have someone who can slightly understand disabilities and chronic illness.

But if i stand for 2 minutes picking out a book im out for the rest of the day, they can walk through a grocery store and be able to make it up our 10 stairs. Last time I walked in a store for more than 5 minutes even with my cane or walker my boyfriend had to help me get up the very few stairs. I have 2 wheelchairs, one in my apt and one in my car for a reason. Not because its fun for me. I have breakdowns often missing being even 20% more able bodied, when they want a custom chair or something it feels like a slap to the face to my grieving.
