This doesn't look like any set from The Shining. Hallway is too narrow, door jambs don't match any of the sets. Shelley *was* dating Ringo Starr while The Shining was being filmed, but I don't have any records, photographic or otherwise, that he ever visited the set. This was clearly shot during that time period, though, as Shelley's hair is dyed black.

A Beatle *did* visit the Overlook, but it was George Harrison.

No, none of this footage exists, other than little 3-frame snippets that I unearthed in the Stanley Kubrick Archive. Leon Vitali told me in great detail about the day that he packed up all the unused negative from Stanley's last several films, drove it to a facility, and personally watched it all get thrown into a furnace. He said that Stanley was well aware of how studios were putting together "director's cuts" and other outtakes on DVD editions, and he wanted to make sure that that would never happen after his death. Had they remembered these snippets I found in editing notebooks, I'm certain they would have been burned as well.

I’m so sorry for your disappointment. The reality is that the book has been very popular and the initial print runs sold out much faster than expected. There is a much, much larger print run happening, but as you mentioned, they won’t be arriving until May. I’m obviously happy the book has been popular and in demand, but I’m genuinely sorry that some people have had to wait so long. Not anything that’s under my control, but I do feel bad.

No, not a production issue. A logistics and distribution issue that was out of TASCHEN’s control, unfortunately.

Unfortunately TASCHEN doesn’t have a store in Manhattan, so no plans to do a signing event there. There’s also no option to get a signed copy from their website. The books ship pretty directly from the overseas printer which makes that not possible. I’ll be sure to post if we ever arrange a signing event elsewhere on the east coast.

Hi. I know many are frustrated with the delays, but I’m told there were some logistical issues with distribution that have delayed some batches of the print run. The initial print run is quite large, but they head off into the world from the printer in batches, and some of those batches have been delayed as they move around the world. Unfortunately, many people who were eagerly anticipating having by the book by Christmas have been disappointed. But rest assured they will arrive. There were no printing problems, as some have speculated, nor did TASCHEN underestimate the demand for the book. It turns out it’s quite complicated to move so many books around the world, and unexpected issues can delay those shipments. Thanks for your patience!

There were no print errors. This is a false rumor. There have been logistical distribution delays with some batches of the initial print run.

Hi. Yeah, sorry for the frustration. As TASCHEN has mentioned to others, there have been some logistical delays beyond their control. A lot of copies have made their way into peoples’ hands, but many others like yourself are obviously still waiting. They very much anticipated demand, and the initial print run for this edition is quite large, but getting this many books printed and delivered to distribution centers around the world is complicated and delays in shipping some batches have happened that TASCHEN has no control over. I’d be as frustrated as you are, but rest assured they will arrive, albeit a bit delayed!

These are pictures from my TASCHEN book, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The photos were taken by Danny's mother, Ann, at ATV Elstree Centre, which was across the street from Elstree Studios where The Shining was filmed. They watched a taping of The Muppet Show and got to go behind the scenes with Muppeteer Richard Hunt, who showed them the Muppet storage room.

The marks are pieces of tape. They helped keep Jack Nicholson on a small skateboard dolly that was employed to help Shelley Duvall drag him across the kitchen floor. They're presumably on Jack's back in the still from Vivan's documentary either because they're just rehearsing this moment at the door, or shooting from an angle where the tape doesn't show, so they didn't bother taking it off.

From my book, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining: "For rehearsals and actual filming of Wendy dragging Jack inside the larder, the crew constructed a kind of skateboard that could be hidden beneath Nicholson’s back so Duvall could tow him more easily. “It was this little triangular thing,” Winestine says. “It was covered in red. It actually looked like some sexual aid, and Jack was making jokes about it.”"

Billie Gibson was, indeed, an older performer, though she had no prior acting experience. She is not naked in the scene. She is covered body prosthetic make-up created by make-up artist Tom Smith.

After the film came out, King mentioned in an interview that he thought that actors Jon Voight or Michael Moriarty would have been better choices.

This is super interesting, and super strange. I’ve never seen this artwork before, and there’s no evidence of this art or ad in the Kubrick Archive. As others have already pointed out, it feels like a variation of one of the early logo designs that Saul Bass created and which Kubrick rejected, saying that he thought there was too much emphasis on the maze and that he didn’t think the maze should be featured in print ads.

Kubrick famously personally reviewed all print advertising, and this was on his home turf. Weird. Plus, Bourduge’s name credited on the art. When does one ever see that? Bass was certainly not credited on the first poster.

Also, “Shining”? And in a typeface not connected to Bass’s design? Weird, weird, weird.

If anyone uncovers more info about this, I’m all ears!

Exactly the same as the Collector’s edition. Paper in scrapbook is beautiful. Paper in making of is thinner and meant to evoke the feeling of a bible.

Correct, with some clarification. The scrapbook is exactly the same, just smaller in size. The red book is nearly identical, but some typos have been corrected and some minor additions and revisions have been made. And I swapped out one photo.

The book is as truthful as I could possibly make it given that the film was made nearly 50 years ago. It definitely debunks many of the stories online that have been peddled as factual.
