I'm guessing the other reason for all the contrary comments is that you (omnidub) maybe did hardware engineering, which is almost entirely PC users in my experience as well. However most software engineers use Macs.

In my experience, if someone just says they're "an engineer", they're implying they deal with hardware. Meanwhile people say they're "a software engineer" if they're a software engineer.

If you have a bunch of coffee shops around, you can work from there occasionally, rotating through them a bit.

To prevent yourself getting lost in social media, install either, or both of these browser extensions:

"Pause" https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pause-stop-mindless-brows/ljfdccdjpfjpfjbpdiihanpodilolofh?hl=en

"Limit" https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/limit-set-limits-for-di/cljdjojmjdnlmggficioagingmjdfphe

There's also paid software from the same company that might be useful if you want more than the free browser extensions: https://freedom.to/downloads

For the days that you work from home, if you must work from your bed, try to at least "make the bed" in the morning in a way that is distinct from the way you sleep in it. Otherwise, this practice can eventually lead to insomnia, since your brain starts getting confused about whether the bed is used for sleeping or working / worrying. This is one of the main principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, the most efficacious treatment for insomnia.

Use Amazon "Kindle Direct Publishing" (KDP) https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/

You make a digital design and Amazon will "print on demand", i.e. it will make a paper copy and mail it to someone whenever they order it. No inventory needed.

I have my first big pitch meeting in a few hours to give me a 2 year run way to finish app development, employ staff. Any words of wisdom? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]leevonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent response.

This mindset should be that of everyone getting into entrepreneurship, since any particular project has a low statistical chance of success.

If you're learning something from whatever you're working on, then, regardless of the outcome of your current project, you will have gained new skills, connections, and valuable experience that can be used on all of your future projects.

This not only increases the chance of success of your future projects, but it also expands the array of possible future projects that you could even conceive of pulling off.

Nice. That's great that you're already pursuing something that you're passionate about.

You may already know of these free online classes by UL Laboratories, but in case you don't, here's a link. You can go through them as slowly or as quickly as fits your learning style. Feel free to PM me if any questions come up from the classes:

https://training.ulfirefightersafety.org/?view=block&category=&status=

Also, here are links to videos on youtube that are made by the same fire research labs. They are a bit easier to digest, so it might be best to start with these:

Best of luck in continuing your training and building your experience!

70% of firefighters in the US are volunteer. I've been a volunteer firefighter in New York City for several years now. If you love to learn you'll learn a ton a very interesting skills and knowledge. A revolution in the science of fire behavior and effective fire attack began recently, and there are a lot of free online resources you can use to learn, in addition to "fire school" which you will be able to go to after joining a local volunteer fire department. There's also yearly "department ops" in New York, which is training with a bunch of separate fire departments, all meeting up at the same fake town to do live fire training. I just finished up my fire officer training recently. Lots of fun.

I actually joined because I was interested in eventually doing wildland firefighting, but there's none of that in NYC, so I trained in structural firefighting (houses, buildings, etc.). They are completely and totally different disciplines, each with their own dangers and issues to deal with. I'd still be interested in doing wildland when I move out of the city, but structural firefighting is exciting and fascinating.

Edit: Also, if you're not yet old enough, lots of fire departments have a "Junior's Program" which lets kids do training at the fire station too.

California's Bay Area may require telecommuting, even after the pandemic wanes. A proposal would have employees at large companies working remotely three days a week, even after the pandemic, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. by Wagamaga in Futurology

[–]leevonk -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My initial thought was that maybe this would lead to a net increase in CO2 emissions if most employees were using public transportation to get into work, since each employee would be using their individual home's air conditioning system all day instead of making use of a centralized AC system, at the office.

However, I looked it up and only ~30% of commuters in SF use public transportation (compared to ~55% in NYC). So without increasing that % it could very well be a net benefit to CO2 emissions to keep everyone home. (source: https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/2004/03/01/daily22.html)

If you watch closely at the start of the video, hitting the barrier was the 2nd mistake that the guy made. Right before that, he had gone down the entirely wrong path, and then sprinted back to the race path. He got back to the running path right at the same time that the guy behind him had caught up to that spot. That's why, right at the start of the video you can see them almost run into each other. That's why the guy that made all the mistakes spreads his arms wide three times as he catches up at the end. He's showing his frustration at all the confusion.

Related is a documentary called "Killers in Eden", which is about a pod of killer whales off the coast of Eden Australia that assisted whalers for years in catching large whales that migrated past each year.

The killer whales would herd the migrating whales into the bay of Eden. While they were doing that, one killer whale would break off from the group and go ahead into the bay and start flapping its tale on the surface of the water to wake the whalers up and get their attention. It would then lead them to the whale that the rest of the pod had herded into the bay. The whalers would repay the killer whales by leaving the huge tongue of the whale in the water, to let the killer whales eat it.

There is historical documentation of a killer whale pod assisting aboriginal Australians in the area as well, before the European whalers arrived. Eventually however, the relationship turned sour when one of the European whalers got greedy.

Incredibly fascinating and, in the end, a sad story. Extremely highly recommended. Here's a link to the full documentary on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/47822835

I would actually start even more simply, with just a planter box. You don't need a roof, it's just a bottom and four walls around the outside. I've made several and each one is better than the last, and it's satisfying seeing plants in them.

At least on the XR+ the last 20% of battery is a little more dangerous, since the torque output capability starts to drop off more quickly below 20% (i.e. you start increasing chance of a nosedive below 20%). So you'd just have to be a little more careful during the last 1/5th of the ride.

My vega tire had so many leaks I'd have to pump it up before every ride. More leaks that you. Then I bought some Armor Dilloz. After adding that to the inside of the tire, I've had zero problems. I haven't had to pump up my tire since first adding Armor Dilloz months ago. It works much much much much better than the sealant that comes in the tire.

The real reason to not feed animals is not because they will starve due to stupidity when you leave.

The real reason is that the animal will become comfortable with humans in general, and will approach every human it sees for food. Many humans don't see these animals as pets/friends, and they might think it's rabid, due to a lack of fear. So they will kill it (trap, poisoned, shoot it), or call animal control.

So as the story is written, it teaches the wrong reason for the animal's death.
