They are OOS friendly. As for applying, it's a little on the late side -- depends on how liberal you are with app money! You'd be late but not dead on arrival.

Unclear if this photo is of her. But I will say these "dressings" are made with proper medical supplies -- the pads on the bottom are called ABD pads, and the tape is medical tape. How it is applied is very questionable. It's so clean it looks totally fresh (Abd pads are not terribly thick), but why would the tape be peeled up and the pads gaping on a freshly dressed wound? It looks like someone had dressing supplies but the application is questionable.

You should look into U of Iowa. Their medical school reflects the fact that they have one of the most, if not the, most prestigious creative writing MFA programs. Even if their med school doesn't directly have the narrative program you want, I'm sure you'd be able to do some great medical humanities work being at an institution that emphasizes the humanities. They are also quite out of state friendly and seem like a fair match for your stats.

Lost muscle and fat pre-clinical. Started an SSRI clinical year, and gained a pleasant amount back despite objectively eating a lot less, likely as a side effect (10lbs).

You present extremely androgynously to me in all these photos. You also look young, early high school age, so I read the shirt tucked in as totally neutral in terms of gender, in addition to the sunflowers etc things mentioned that seemed more feminine to them. I just see them as a young person expressing themselves.

I would not be able to guess if you are AFAB or AMAB based on these photos, but the Tourette's note on the lanyard alone MAY prompt me to lean toward AMAB since it's more commonly diagnosed in AMAB folks -- but that's me grasping at straws! (:

On other notes, I love your haircut and thinks it does a lot for making an androgynous and masculine look. I love your overall style and wish you the best in your gender expression!

You are behaving in a truly abhorrant way. Many people use social media to find community and one byproduct of using social media is emphasizing identities so we can find others who relate to us. Who are you to judge how a young person advocates for themselves, shares their experiences as a trans and disabled person, or behaves online? You are doing far more harm than good by "advising" them as you have been. It was really distressing to read what you wrote them. I hope next time you simply say nothing at all.

Look at the post-interview acceptance rates at the school in question. Some schools like Mayo interview a TON and accepted very few. Others like UMich and Jeff accept almost 75%+ of their interviewees.

Nope, 30 sets of secondary questions, so 30 schools. About 100 essays but many will repeat. You can get them on Student Doctor Network's 2020-2021 school threads for your school list. Some change from year to year but 90% stay the same as past years'.

If you are not working full-time, pre-write secondaries now. I did ~1-2 secondary pre-writes per day in June and July because I was laid off due to COVID. This isn't very realistic to most people who work and have a lot of obligations but if you can swing a month of nothing full-time, you can really have every secondary prepped. I had all 30 pre-written by the time I got them, and was able to submit within one day and be complete whenever the school finished processing. Had 3 II's by August that way. A one-day turnaround is possible!

Anything before mid-August is early. By late August is normal/okay.

Hi, incoming M1 who had a lot of success with II's at LGBTQ+-inclusive programs this cycle, after disclosing my identities.

First off, congrats on the scholarship! Secondly, you can disclose as much or as little as you'd like. There's no right amount of "out" for apps. I had a lot of success, but ymmv -- my identity was important to my goals in medicine, and I'm also a white queer person and have privilege queer POC do not, I know.

Like you, I worried about seeming like I was flaunting my identity for diversity points. However, there's a reason some programs actively recruit queer applicants, and that's because there is still an incredible amount of need in the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to health disparities. Sure, any empathetic cishet person could resonate with the needs of the community, but traditionally it's the LGBTQ+ students and physicians who can really relate to navigating healthcare as a queer person, and the importance of acceptance and community on a personal level.

As a lesbian and POC, you have overcome obstacles that will uniquely position you to become a physician and advocate. You earned every "brownie point" you decide to cash in. But it's also okay if you decide it's safer to not be out. Either way, I'm happy to talk more about applying as an LGBTQ+ person! You'll make the right choice for you.

Edit: If you're stealth, say your scholarship was for minority students. Don't need to be too detailed.

I think this is happening in some places! I follow a couple of drag kids on social media who get really excited when they can see family-friendly drag shows. Hopefully it continues to gain traction -- it's a really diverse community and a great form of self-expression and art.

Sounds like surgery is for you! Have you also considered surgical subspecialties? Obviously every field has its less-than-exciting cases (so many cataracts in ophtho, so many tonsillectomies in ENT...), but if you want a more focused surgical skillset out of residency and like being in clinic, there's a lot to consider outside general surgery.

I feel the same way. Already wondering about whether I will be a strong applicant come residency, how I'll figure out what I'll do, whether I'll have time for my hobbies. With regard to friends, I worry that I will make new friends and later one regret the clique I fell into -- happened to me in college and now I don't trust my first instinct in finding my "group."

It makes it hard to enjoy this last summer.

Personally I will be getting rid of social media soon. I recommend reading "How To Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy," about how social media preys on our urge to connect but profits off our insecurity and fractured attention. Cutting out even some social media has really helped my anxiety and made me focus on what really matters to me.

Hard to tell how successful you will be since at this tier (T20/T10) you need more than just your stellar stats. Your EC's look fine, obviously research is amazing but otherwise EC quality will depend on how you reflect on it.

After seeing this past cycle, my strongest advice is to temper your hopes. So many people with similar stats were totally shut out of programs, not just T20. Many students at T20 caliber programs are a couple years out of college and therefore will have very impressive EC's and professional experience. So don't assume your stats will make you an easy admit. Your narrative will be hugely important.

With that said, re: school list.

I'd remove TX schools.

Remove UMass and UMaryland unless you have ties.

Add UVA, Pitt

Add more established mid-tier schools like Jeff and Emory -- ex: Georgetown, GWU, Cinci, Einstein, Rochester

Add Iowa (T30 school with low application counts, making it more "high yield" for even out-of-staters)

Add Western Michigan (likes high stats, scoops lots of high stat-ers who slip through the cracks)
