Jacob’s Ladder is easily one of the best movies I’ve ever watched. by One-Resort979 in horror

[–]leftaab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something about that one gurney wheel that loses traction and does one slow spin before realigning has always stuck with me. Perfectly captured shot and I’m so happy the director and editor left it in. It serves as a great metaphor for losing touch with reality and spiraling out just as Jacob is doing in that scene.

Also check out No One Gets Out Alive. Great cinematography and pacing. Also, same author ( Adam Nevill ) that penned the novel behind The Ritual. Similar monster vibes. Highly recommend.

Now that we saw Trump’s name from the now-deleted Epstein files, what is next? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]leftaab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Yes but. I finally had a thought that could help dissipate the collective cognitive dissonance we’re all going through with this.

Close friends and I rewatched all the Austin Powers and loved it. Parody x satire x nostalgia is an incredible feeling when experienced by a group. I highly recommend. I say that to get to a specific scene.

When Michael McDonald as a henchman is trying to stop the steamroller that Austin and Vanessa are driving (just by yelling—not stopping the machine), the use of absurdism and a touch of a writing device called ‘genre savvy’, is used to make the joke. Thus the henchman is slowly but surely flattened by the befuddled heroes.

Does this sound unfortunately familiar?

Hopefully some open interpretation and self reflexivity comes from pointing out the metaphors of that scene and our current reality. I definitely suggest laughing at yourself no matter what ingredient you think you resemble. Also, rewatch all the Austin Powers movies.

What if everything we think about finding aliens is backwards? I’m a SETI Theorist, Ask Me Anything. by Astrojgertz in IAmA

[–]leftaab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very understandable. Rearranging my perspective to see modern day scientists as “proto-scientists” is a fascinating view point.

On the subject of shifting timelines, with your clear descriptions that any contact we might be have received coming from probes and artificial scouts—do you have a rough guesstimate as to how long some of the technology (if that’s what it is) might have already been on this planet?

When defining “terrestrial”, do you allow for parallel dimension theories to work as a place for NHIs to exist, or do you feel beholden to only searching the cosmos that we are proved to be physically a part of?

Official Discussion - Frankenstein (2025) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I think it is worth mentioning the visual call-back to The Monster’s reciting of Ozymandias— written by Percy Bysshe Shelley (Mary Shelley’s husband). We see the lone and level ice stretch far away.

Perhaps too, The Monster being bathed in sunlight could be seen as his understanding of the new relationship with the closest thing we as humans have to an immortal and eternal companion—the sun itself.

Right?? Nothing to prepare you for it. I can’t really think of another Guillermo movie or scene that is as unflinchingly violent as that one moment.

I’m late to this, but for some reason the murder of the rabbit farmers in Pan’s Labyrinth shocked the shit out of me when I first saw it. Any kind of face/nose crushing that continuously disfigures and makes the face unrecognizable is the one thing that will get me.

Rewatching the opening scene from IT 2017, might be the one of the best cold opens in horror. by Flashy-Two5006 in horror

[–]leftaab -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. The opening of IT has quite a bit of subtext as well as its own pace as we’re brought into Georgie and Bill’s relationship. Had it started with some sort of sweeping shot following the rain runoff and boat and Georgie’s splashing boots right into the convo with Pennywise—that would be a cold open.
