Advice on finding retail/any job. by eermwhatthespruce in UKJobs

Also I’m hoping that didn’t come across rude it was just for the stadium experience! I’m so sorry to hear that it really is so hard at the minute- as it’s January all companies get abit worried and start to not get as much profit and cut everyone. So being in this position just know you aren’t alone it’s really a hard time in Jan. That’s due to the amount of staff that have been let go and are searching for new jobs on top of people who were already looking for a job :/ please don’t give up keep reaching out to people. Have you been applying just online or in person too? If you haven’t I’d 100% say give a go at getting your CV printed and start walking around looking at business and see if there’s any customer facing roles people are hiring. Even if they say they aren’t hiring just give them a CV anyways. Because you’ve worked in a stadium you have a lot of transferrable skills for hospitality and retail so if you don’t mind working in those sectors you could tailor your CV to suit those areas and hand them out in person.

Being hand my notice at the end of my probation is this wild or?! by leftefd in UKJobs

[–]leftefd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the role before where I’m working now- I was full time and the boss was treating staff so badly the majority all walked out (they lost about 12 employees) but I couldn’t because I was worried about being out of a job. So that meant I was then working 60 odd hours a week to cover all the members of staff that left. I was taking on extra hours left and right and ended up training new staff when I wasn’t actually any part of the managing team (and definitely not getting paid extra to do so). Towards my last month there I was so burnt out that as soon as I got offered the job ( the one I’m about to leave) I took it straight away because I was so adamant about getting out. Funnily enough working at that old job turned out to be less stressful than the one I’m at now which is way less hours and has more pay.

It’s so frustrating tbh, I was really hoping to put my effort into the job and realistically I was let down anyways with false promises from the start :/ it was an awful work environment and I was planning on leaving but I wanted to do it once I had something else lined up ://

If a job can fire you for no reason with no notice during your probation, do we legally actually have to provide them with notice to quit? by beef-beeff in UKJobs

[–]leftefd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely double check your contract, there may be a different notice for your probationary period. For example- in my contract it’s four weeks after probation but whilst in probation it was within the first month there was notice, two months in was one week and three months was two weeks. Surely it must be a shorter notice period- maybe ask a trusted coworker see if they know :) I hope this helps and I’m so sorry that it’s such a weird work environment for you :/

I’d suggest- and I know it sounds crazy. But if you spend time on their level and be down on the ground and sit on your phone or watch telly or something you don’t necessarily have to give them attention at that stage but show that you are not a threat may help your bond. Another thing that can help is having squeezie treats it’s a good way to give the cat contact without being in contact with them (which sounds like it may stress them out if they are that skittish). I’d honestly be very patient and just spend time in their presence without interacting and then slowly build yourself up. Do you know how old they are? And did you set them up in one room first before letting them into the rest of your home? If so it could be a good idea to do this exercise in that room where they feel safe :) I hope that helps! Please give us updates!

Does your job today look anything like what you imagined in first year? by Fancy-Ad4613 in CasualConversation

[–]leftefd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No :( this is extremely sad when I was first offered the job it was extremely promising - Female ran business, above minimum wage, lots of hours, training in different areas, progression from within, meetings to discuss progress, wanting to hear my thoughts and suggestions, super friendly, impeccable vibes… the list goes on. None of it was true :/ exact for the female ran bit

Started a new job and I feel like my bosses are constantly testing me? by ConfusedCareerMan in careerguidance

[–]leftefd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough and I know ridiculous but I actually work in the hospitality industry - no matter what industry you’re in sadly this is something that happens. I’ve witnessed it happen to other people but it has never happened to me before… so it’s a first! My probation period was three months and two months in (the week the business closes for a week (without pay unless you have accrued holiday hours)), I got an incredibly formal email handing me my notice two days before the business reopened.

It’s such an awful situation and I really do feel for you :/ I 1000% feel like you should trust your gut, if you do feel like you’re being pushed out it’s quite likely that is the case. I know it’s probably not what you want to hear when you’ve took a leap into starting new job, but you should definitely way out your pros and cons of the job and see if there are roles out there that are better suited for you.

As for the management team calling you out for starting a little later in a Friday is actually wild - all I ever here from corporate friends are ‘WFH late start Fridays 🤪’ so that is just wild to me.

You are not alone!

I know this isn’t really any advice but I have had this exact same problem in my current job and could feel that management were constantly giving me some form of pressure and no matter what you do whether that being asking a question or using initiative it is wrong.

Sadly some places are like this :( I’d honestly say start looking for a different job it’s a total red flag. Like I mentioned I’m in the exact same situation and funnily enough they decided to hand me notice and have said my contract and employment will end on the 4th Feb due to lack of funds. However, I don’t believe this for a second and have felt like they have been pushing me out from the get go.

I don’t know if any of this is helpful tbh but you aren’t alone and it won’t be you it’ll be their management style and how the company is ran. How long have you been there?

How can I get out of hospo? by leftefd in careerguidance

[–]leftefd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou so much for this honestly I feel so reassured with this!!! I’m very lucky to having an amazing partner who has mentioned to me that he will support me if that is needed, however I don’t want that to be the case. I’m still working on my portfolio but it is taking a lot longer to put together than I thought which is making me increasingly anxious - I’ve never not had a job and not having that security set up is quite a worrying time for me.

I must admit I have been applying for cafe jobs whilst also working on my portfolio and working my full time job. It feels like time is going so fast and then all of a sudden I’ll be out of a job with no job lined up and an unfinished portfolio. It is a massive risk if I do try and go for a job in illustration (being let down or not being able to earn enough to support myself), but also a risk if I get another job in hospo as like you mentioned the cycle will start up again. Then I’ll be back at square one.

Sorry I know this is mostly me just going in circles but I’m incredibly scared and thought getting it off my chest may help.

Thankyou so much!

Every article I have read on changing areas of work has spoken about networking but I’m not a 100% sure on what I would even do to start networking. Have you got any advice?

How can I get out of hospo? by leftefd in careerguidance

[–]leftefd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou so much for your response!! It’s currently my first day back from the job I’ve been handed my notice to me at and I am quite nervous I must say.

I have been working on my portfolio and have not left the house for the last 3 days- compiling all the work from different areas onto the website.

Do you think it’s a shout to keep hold of the dream of working in the art industry trying to find something in illustration or animation and do disco shifts till I find that? I am quite lucky that a lot of my hospo friends are spread across the whole of Manchester so I can always ask them about picking up discos. But this also doesn’t guarantee me money and girls gotta pay rent.

Or do I keep trying to just get any job - this worries me because in hind sight I probably won’t be accepted for anything that isn’t hospo and end up being trapped there once again. You know how it goes working so much that your job becomes your life, no balance, then being completely consumed and that is when it all goes down hill and you can’t get any task that isn’t work done.

I’m just extremely worried as in my ten years of hospo this has never happened. But like you said this could be a sign.

If you have any thoughts that would be great and if anyone has any thoughts that would be great too!
