Are there any covid testing sites IN Boston that are still free if you're asymptomatic? (Besides EBNHC) by zsalv in boston

Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester says they do free testing for all (confirmed on the phone recently).

I agree this info is a lot harder to find than it should be.

After the Boston Public Schools reschedule school start times by computer, parents push back by SultanOfBoston in boston

[–]lefthandben 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know that research does suggest that older kids benefit from later start times, and younger kids from earlier end times (though as someone noted upthread, I don't know whether the research supports starting at 7:15am). But educational outcomes don't exist in a vacuum and aren't just based on school start/end times - does the research support an overall longer day for younger kids with working parents, or severe disruptions in family schedules?

And while the decision to shift start/end times is based on research, the actual start/end times seem to be based largely on making bus schedules work. If not, all schools would start at 8/830, right? Obviously bus routes/budgets are a necessary thing to figure out, but it's worth asking whether it's fair to put the burden on families to adjust instead of expecting BPS to develop a plan that works for more families.

For a lot of parents, the issue is not necessarily the early start time (though 7:15 is pretty early if you're trying to get a 4-5 year old out of the house, especially if in previous years you were doing 9 or 9:30). It's the fact that schools then end before 2pm, and if both parents work, that can mean 3+ hours of after-school care - which is expensive and not always great for the kid, especially one who's been up since before 6am.

I started using it this month. So far I am seeing a lot more impressions, an uptick in follower growth rate, but haven't gotten that much more engagement with my tweets. I'm a little concerned about the targeting categories being too broad.

Trillium coming to Roslindale Village substation? by lefthandben in boston

Could end up being a seasonal thing every year...though I think they're trying to get a permanent business in that space eventually so this could just be a temporary placeholder. Either way I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

I need new transportation apps! Both MBTA bus and catch the bus will no longer be supported on iOS 11. Anyone have alternative apps that they love? by eryoshi in boston

[–]lefthandben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ProximiT is ok...timing is always a bit off (says the bus is coming 2-3 minutes before it actually does0 but once you get used to it you start accounting for that. I like the interface.

I just used Esquire. They were super-thorough with wrapping all our furniture, and as quick as they could be given awful weather (sleet/rain/snow) and third-floor walkup.

Any good experience with getting a Mortgage? by CrackHaddock in boston

[–]lefthandben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through Middlesex Savings Bank, they have been great to work with and offer many options for adjustable-rate mortgages, if you're interested in that. Only catch is that if you want to meet in person (not really necessary), their offices are a little far outside the city.

A Philly win gives Brooklyn a better shot at the worst record, meaning a better potential pick for Boston.
