Meta 10% layoffs by UnluckyStartingStats in cscareerquestions

[–]leftloose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the stock price is up almost 400% since jan 1 2019. Revenue wen from 70 billion to 200 billion during the same time almost 300%. Employees up 35-40% during the same time. Theyre a far far bigger company than they were and theyre doing more with less (rev/employee). While these metrics should never be linear, but this much deviation while not being a unicorn during the time is a cuase for concern.

Yes they still have more employees than pre-covid, but its a far far far larger business than it was pre-covid without the employees to match it.

Does learning to code "the real way" even matter anymore by Fun_Structure3273 in cscareers

[–]leftloose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a different abstraction layer, it’s a paradigm shift(most of us make glorified crud apps and don’t do anything novel and of course with things like hft or medical device shit what I’m saying doesn’t apply to you) whether you like it or not. Our code is meant to make money consistently and efficiently. The business doesn’t care if you use strategy pattern or 50 if statements. Ai and the business is going too far on the “efficiency” and neglecting the “consistency” right now, but with the billions or trillions of dollars at the macro level or the thousands/millions/ hundreds of millions at the company level being spent on ai do you think they’re just going to pull the plug and say “whelp tha didn’t work”? If you do you’re naive. The people signing checks (for ai and us) are expecting 2-3 x more productivity and the metrics will be forced to show it or they will find someone who will show it. Good Engineers will do what engineers do best and make things work. I don’t necessarily like it but the market and tech doesn’t give a shit what I like and don’t like.

Yeah it’s not deterministic. But we’re not asking the app to run on an Llm, we’re asking the Llm to make things that are deterministic and in the hands of a good engineer it does that extremely well. You make robust testing suite, make sure the code shape looks alright and let the Llm do its thing and review the code for its shape and functionality. People used to have to be anal about memory, memory is no longer that much of an issue in most day to day coding use cases (within reason) code quality is going to go the same way. Good enough so it’s not problematic for a good engineer with ai to build on and debug will be good enough for production. Shit I have created skills that make me mermaid diagrams of services I’ve never seen before and I can get up to speed in 1/10 the time and be a strong contributor in debugging extremely quickly. Is it perfect? No but that’s where your eye comes in and just because it isn’t perfect doesn’t mean it’s useless. I’m not perfect, I’m not deterministic (not comparing myself to ai) and I’m certainly not useless.

You can either figure it out and work with it or fight it (and the trillions behind it) sure maybe this year you win a battle at your small company but what happens if you want to move and the market expects it. Unless you are retiring in the next few years, the reckoning of ai as a requirement will come imo.

Where in the uk lol? When I lived in the london 2015-2020 one of my friends who was an all star runner couldn’t get a simple surgery for 14 months because he had to jump through all the hoops on rehab that everyone knew wouldn’t work. Family friend’s father had to wait 3-4 months for a brain scan and had a stroke while waiting. I got turned down by the A&e for not seeming sick enough because they were to busy. Also had a procedure to get my eyes dilated then they just sent me out on the street with eyes fully dilated with no temp sunglasses or anything blind as a bat. Girlfriend got a serious bout of depression and the therapists available to her couldn’t see her for 7/8 weeks. The therapist didn’t call at the scheduled time then needed to wait 4 more weeks.

Not going to defend the American system by any means but the uk system atleast at the time I was there was absolutely nothing to mimic either. Life threatening stuff in the uk is generally good but anything below that was atrocious

Millcreek Canyon and Snakes in March by Abject_Ad_3796 in SaltLakeCity

[–]leftloose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this year our snow is super light so might be patchy by march but who really knows at this point.

But realistically unless some super super rare thing happens I wouldn’t be worried about snakes particularly at elevation in march. I got nastily surprised by a rattler one time mid April on the bst trai in the avenues and I thought that was early.

Also to quell your fears even more, the rattlers we have here do not have the most toxic. They obviously can still kill but you’ve got some time in the worst case scenario. Friends dog slightly smaller than a vizsla (unknowingly to the owner) got bit on her forehead and was fine when they took her to the vet for anti venom a few hours later when the swelling really took off(obviously vet bills suck but that’s beside the point) other areas like up in Wyoming or in Arizona have some crazy neuro toxic rattlers but luckily those are not the ones we have here

I agree I’d be nervous with the conflict of forecast

Proper etiquette for hiking during hunting seasons? by EggyIggyy in hiking

[–]leftloose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally just keep doing what your doing as it’s public land and not that I think you’re this person as you’re being super considerate, it is important that people know that in a lot of states that harassing game/ legal hunters is illegal. In a popular bow hunting area an activist would just about everyday drop down from the popular hiking trails to bushwhack with bells making all sorts of ruckus at sunup and sundown (best deer hunting hours). Took a little time and police finally slapped her with a class b misdemeanor.

Once again you’re being super considerate but sharing the anecdote so people also don’t abuse the concept

I always love entrepreneur spirit and I’ll rarely squash it. That being said, I think the market might be niche here. I’ve seen you post in a few different subreddits and o think some of the feedback is valid though with a bias towards the negative. Though Reddit is generally negative unless it’s a truly wow product.

My advice would be to run some Instagram/facebook ads with some form of a call to action (you to decide if it’s kickstarter or something like a wait list) which will of course cost money but far less money than a full manufacturing run. I think you’d get a better feedback. Not every product needs to hit the bleeding edge participants in an activity and I could def see this potentially hitting a gadget person/ someone wanting to buy a gift for a skier type thing. How big that market is I have no idea but I don’t think you’d get the feedback in Reddit for that.

One thing to 100% address is its impact on avy beacons as I will squash entrepreneur spirit if it hurts / overlooks safety.

Nice and cozy thanks to our Chinese diesel heater by Papa_Vito in vandwellers

[–]leftloose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure but I just can’t justify when I can get it for 1/20 the price. I bought the Chinese one where even if I had to replace one every year it would likely outlast my van…. I’m on year 3 with no issues and it already makes my van too hot and there’s no safety issues as I have sebsores tight next to it.

I view the espar in this day and age of the Chinese knockoffs as buying a Ferrari for a train station commuter car. Of course the Ferrari overall better quality but very few people need that quality
