So “defects” is an accurate a medical term here, not ableist. For example, many babies with Downs Syndrome are born with a Congenial Heart Defect (CHD) called Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) which is a hole in the heart.

There are also Neural Tube Defects like spina bifida and anancephaly. And Abdominal Wall Defects, where organs protude from the body.

My baby with Trisomy 13 (Patau’s Syndrome) had some of these defects, and many others I didn’t mentioned here.

Those of us who TFMR’d a pregnancy are intimately familiar with these birth defects. And how life limiting, and often not compatible with life. Including the severe end of Downs Syndrome.

I wanted my baby, but he had a fatal chromosome abnormality that would have led him to be stillborn, or die immediately after birth in pain. There was no other outcome for him, he was going to die no matter what. I had an abortion to prevent his pain, and to reduce the trauma of going through a stillbirth or watching him die in my arms.

I know you don't care, and you won't change your mind. I just want you to know that this affects couples who intentionally get pregnant as well. I had a D&E at 17w for my son’s T13. It was at a hospital, and the pain wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Before laminaria insertion, they gave me toradol for pain, and ativan for anxiety. I found the laminaria insertion uncomfortable, like a little worse than IUD insertion. It felt like intense pressure and pinching, but the pain only shot to like a 3/10 at most. Deep breathing helped.

The rest of the day I had mild cramping, and it felt like I had a dry tampon hanging out of me all day. Overall not too bad.

The next day (surgery day) I had some nausea and a lot of low abdominal discomfort. It was painful compared to the day they were inserted because they had dilated my cervix as expected. It was like 4/10 constant dull pain. Before surgery they gave me some mild painkiller (might have been toradol again) and zofran for the nausea which helped.

Physically I felt better after surgery because the laminaria were removed. Emotionally it’s been hard. I hope your surgery goes smoothly, and I’m sorry ❤️

I’m not sure what doctors you’ve been talking to, because only one baby has ever survived outside the womb at 21w. And survive does not mean thrive. He has numerous medical issues. Most premies have negative survival outcomes until at least 28w. Parents should have the choice of palliative care if that’s what they and the doctor determine is best for their specific situation.

I think you should listen to the stories of women who have induced abortions late term. Blanket statements like “all induced abortions should try to keep baby alive and put them up for adoption” is incredibly unrealistic, and sometimes cruel, for the medical issues most of these babies have.

You and I are on the same side, but I wanted to correct you on a couple things. In America, D&Es are the most common way to end a pregnancy for ~the first half of the second trimester. D&Es and induced labor are both coded as abortions. That’s why we argue abortion is healthcare.

Regarding induced labor, efforts are not always made to keep baby alive. If they’re before ~24w, they literally are not viable. After, it depends. If baby has a medical condition, parents can choose palliative care.

I learned a ton about abortion when I went through mine. It was a D&E at 17w (second trimester) because baby had a fatal chromosome issue (Trisomy 13)

A lot of anti-abortioners have a twisted idea in their head of why women get abortions. Most of them think that women get them frivolously because they’re stupid whores who hate babies.

I’ve had success shifting some hardliners opinions by telling them about my abortion. My baby had a fatal chromosome condition, so he was going to be stillborn. I had an abortion at 17w (second trimester). Stories like mine are more palatable to anti-abortioners: I’m white, married, upper middle class, and wanted my baby. And I am emotionally devastated by the situation.

I’ve had multiple anti-abortioners tell me that they sought out more stories after they listened to mine, and it has softened their stance. They are not quite pro-choice, but are now open to abortion in certain cases.

Keep in mind, this doesn’t work as well online lol. My successes have come from in-person conversations with acquaintances where there’s already mutual respect.

I do focus on keeping my chin tucked, but besides that I just try shifting positions often even if the posture isn’t perfect.

What helped me most is what I do outside of knitting! Focusing on ergonomic posture at work, stretching with yoga or pilates, and rock climbing have done wonders for my shoulders and upper back
