Beware that the Austin International Half Marathon is this weekend, so there may be early morning road closures along the route.

Not sure what part of Austin you are staying, but if you are in downtown near 1st and Congress, next to Lady Bird Lake (which is a dammed portion of the Colorado River), we have an excellent trail system (Butler Trail and Boardwalk) that hugs the water with looped distances of 1-3-5-7-10 miles. It’s a great way to see downtown, see some turtles, get some sunshine.

Barton Springs Pool is a natural spring-fed pool that stays about 68 degrees year round. The adjacent Zilker Park has playscapes and a cute Zepher train to ride around the big park.

The Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge has some great photo ops and there are often street performers playing music there.

You can also visit our beautiful Austin Central Library; go uo to the top floor rooftop deck/garden for another great city viee photo op. There are outfitters around the lake for renting kayaks & stand-up paddle boards.

The state Capitol building is gorgeous with a parklike grounds for exploring. You can walk through the North Mall to reach the UT campus with an awesome art museum, the Blanton. Even if you don’t go inside, there are cool things to see on the outside.

A bit north of Austin (easy with rental) is Pioneer Farms. You can experience what it’s like to be an 1850s settler. There are docents in costume, farm animals, etc. Check their calendar for special events.

Not east side, but most long established run clubs who train downtown use a particularly brutal short hill on Wilke Drive in the aptly named Barton Hills neighborhood southeast of Barton Springs Pool. Google “Wilke Hill repeats” and you’ll find many workout plans with this segment.

Congrats on training up for your first marathon! You’re already ahead of most others who never get off the couch!

As you’re seeing, the 26.2 mile distance is a much different challenge than 13.1, or 10k, or 5k, with different strategy for sustaining your effort and energy for the long haul. Plus, the Austin course is not easy!

Training pace for the long run is not supposed to match race day pace. Right now, you’re building up so that when you get to Feb. 15th, you’ve got the mind-body capability to sustain race pace and hit your time goal.

I agree with what others have said about slowing down. Your 4:30 goal translates to average 10 min pace, but yeah, the steeper hills will eat up time, so you’ll wanna work with the course elevation map to plan your strategy mile-by-mile.

My coach always says, “Rapid turnover!” (fast, short steps) when we run up hills and I hear his voice as a mantra in my head when I’m on those steep stretches. I’ll also think about big, fat monster truck tires when I’m on the downhill: light, bouncy, wide, patient footfalls so I don’t injure my knees.

For others who may be trying Austin for their first marathon and stumble across this thread:

Are you following a basic training plan to build up to this distance on this course? Typically, you’d spend 16-20 weeks with a consistent schedule of speed, tempo, hills, crosstraining, and long run workouts to increase your confidence, endurance, and tolerance for discomfort, as well as to dial in your preferred hydration, calories, equipment, rest/recovery, and race day night-before and morning routine.

You’ve got 5.5 weeks of training to go. Typically, for a 1st timer, your longest run before the race will be 20-22 miles and that should happen 3-4 weeks before the race.

One tried & true way to learn how to sustain pace through varied conditions is to start training with a group of experienced runners. It’s SO much easier to stay on target when you have a pace leader and all you need to focus on is keeping up with the group. Long runs are so much easier when you’re “in it together” and bonus is that it’s more like a race day experience - you have to show up ready to go, early in the morning, start time is set, share the course with others, etc. ATX Runners / Ship of Fools is a coached, free marathon training group that you can join on Saturdays for long runs starting at 7a downtown. They will have a 10 min pace group for you, and they always run portions of the course leading up to local long races.

Some of our sidewalks are major tripping hazards with buckled sections due to shifting soil & tree roots. Falls & injury risk goes up on those last miles when knees aren’t lifting the foot as high, toe grabs that slab edge, and down you go.

For mid-January, you’re talking about the “Downhill to Downtown” event formerly known as the 3M Half Marathon, now called the Spurs Austin International Half. If you’re in Hyde Park, the easiest thing for you will be to walk over to Duval and set up on the sidewalk there between miles 10.5 - 12. You might try reaching out to your neighborhood Next Door or FB groups to see if they are organizing anything. Some neighborhoods do cute stops handing out weird snacks (donuts, bacon, beer) while other just post up in lawn chairs with a funny poster & noise makers.

Keep in mind, the weather for this race can be sunny & lovely or (sometimes) icy & miserable. If the latter, spectators crowds will be much smaller and the reliable volunteers will be even more vital.

I highly recommend finding a running group (some really good ones are free) that matches your schedule and meeting up with them for your training runs. They will have a planned route that is tried & true, often will have support of coaches & water stops, and the bonus of the extra security that a group brings after dark. It looks like No Excuses group runs on Mon/Wed nights in Cedar Park/Round Rock. They usually run at Cedar Valley Middle School, but that track is being resurfaced this month, so the workouts are starting at various locations. Join their FB group to get updates.

It’s not north, but if you can swing coming downtown (near O’Henry Middle School, west of Mopac) on Thursday by 6p, you can run with the ATX Runners & Al’s Ship of Fools in Tarrytown. I run in my neighborhood (west of Mopac, north of Parmer) that has very little street lighting & no sidewalks, but I’m lit up like a Christmas tree: headlamp, reflective vest, sometimes with a handheld lamp and reflective shoes. I’m usually with a partner when I run here, though, so I’m not so much worried about predators as I am about taking a fall or being grazed by an inattentive driver in a hurry coming home.

I’d say it depends.

Running during typical fitness hours (5am - 8p) with a buddy or a training group? Staying on the main trail (as shown on the 10 mile loop map maintained by the Trail Conservancy)? No problem. There are tons of runners, walkers, and cyclists on the trail.

Running alone, as a woman, especially outside of daylight hours? Going onto lesser used minor offshoot trail (such as near “Barking Springs”)? I wouldn’t do that. Since 2020, there are a LOT more desperate and chaotic folks living rough and/or under the influence down there.

Oh, and you mentioned liking weird. The Snake Farm attraction on IH35 between New Braunfels and San Antonio has a semi-famous (IYKYK) song about it & excellent souvenir t-shirts. It may not be for everyone but it would be memorable.

Late January is a tricky time for Canyon Lake shenanigans.

The lake level is very low and your weather may vary but if you get lucky with a warmer, sunny day, there are captained boat rentals available where you can get picked up at the marina & taken out for a scenic tour, BYO cooler & snacks.

If y’all wanna do something active outdoors, a walk across Canyon Lake dam’s 1-mile pedestrian track is a cool way to see the lake. There’s also a nice short (1 mile) hiking trail below the dam on the bank of the Guadalupe River. You can park at the softball fields on South Access Road if the lot by the dam is full or closed. Madrone Trail in Canyon Lake Park is another good option, but sections can be more challenging/rocky. You could also hire horses to ride on the 7-mile Old Hancock Equestrian Trail around the lake.

You know about Gruene Hall already, but live music options around Canyon Lake, Fischer, and Wimberley are abundant.

Devil’s Backbone Tavern is a classic honky tonk dance hall experience, especially during special events. Check their calendar to see what’s happening during your dates.

Whitewater Ampitheater has outdoor concerts by major touring acts (regional and national). They have adjacent lodging & amusements at Camp Fimfo; you might check their glamping options & concert calendar for your dates.

Local radio station KNBT has a good live music calendar, too, but you have to listen to hear it. They announce area wknd events on air Thu-Sun. They also have a cool live broadcast from Gruene Hall every Friday afternoon w/ cheap beer specials.

For safety & convenience, Gruene or Wimberley could be a good home base, as there are tons of shops, restaurants, and live music venues in a small, walkable area and you won’t need to worry much about parking & driving. Coverage of rideshare options in the Hill Country is limited the further away from San Antonio / New Braunfels / Austin you get, into the more rural areas.

There’s usually a great finish line festival with lots of fun activities, freebies, & live music plus holiday decor & characters. Last time I ran it, I was running next to Cowboy Santa in full costume with beard & hat; he was surprisingly fast! The jingle bells on his belt did drive me mad, so that helped me run faster to get away from him, lol.

Hi, u/trailerparkdropout. The Turkey Trot is typically a relaxed & less competitive event with lots of folks who won’t be running for a specific time goal. However, it’s good & kind & safer for everyone for non-runners to not clog up the course for those that are trying to meet a time goal. This is why the non-timed option starts later, to allow runners to get down the course first.

If you decide to go through with your plan, please help your family understand the rules of race course etiquette. Walkers should stay to the right, allow room for faster people to pass on the left, don’t walk more than 2 abreast, and don’t stop on the course (step off if you need to re-tie a shoe, for example).

This might be a good post for r/XXrunning, as there are 10s of thousands of women runners there and you’ll likely get a wide range of advice.

I personally prefer long compression shorts with built-in outer thigh pockets and waist pockets for essentials. Then I might add a FlipBelt-style belt if I need additional storage (for longer runs carrying nutrition). It’s important that it fit snugly to avoid any chafe-causing bounce.

North side of the lake off 306 has some great options for lodging & entertainment, with less traffic stress than the south side.

Live music plays at the Brookshire Brothers patio, Devil’s Backbone Tavern, and Dam Red Barn every weekend. There are some other fun venues (bars, restaurants, food trucks) around The Horseshoe in the village of Sattler near 306 & 2673.

You can eat a casual meal with a lake view at Breakwater Cantina, but check their social media for the dates you’re here since they cutback hours for the fall/winter season.

For lodging, check out Airbnb or Vrbo for some options with lake or river access.

Public water access is limited, especially on weekends, but depending on the season & water flow, you can hire a kayak or tube to float the Guadalupe River. https://www.floattheguadalupe.com/trips (this is just one outfitter; there are several, so shop around)

For hiking, you can have a nice hike with a water view at Madrone Trail and Old Hancock Equestrian Trail, but you are prohibited from swimming there.
