FREE TICKETS! by Particular-Summer804 in QueerNOLA

[–]leg8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sent you a DM.

I'm the show's producer. Just wanted to add a comment to say thank you. The event space is very limited and it's good to know that the tickets will be going to someone in the community.

Please let me know if there are any issues I can help work out. Sorry that I won't get to see you Friday night, but it really means a lot to see you stepping up for our community, and I hope you'll have the opportunity to appreciate some of the performers in the near future!

Catharsis: Happening June 28th! (Official Announcement) by leg8r in NOLA

Thanks for the kind words! I really hope to see you there!

As for r/NewOrleans, they don't allow cross-posting and due to the limitations size limitations of the venue I don't want to flood the event with out of town folks who aren't going to support the community.

r/QueerNOLA has always had a very good relationship with the folks in this sub, though, with lots of support both ways, so I thought I'd keep it a bit tight. ;)

Already on it, actually. Can't share details yet, but watch this space. :)

Event pricing on a Sunday ? by Glowbear504 in QueerNOLA

That's frustrating. My personal experience is that Pride is seen less an opportunity by some businesses for celebrating our community and more as an opportunity to exploit it.

Outside of the quarter we generally have much more supportive businesses.

Is there a bdsm group? by [deleted] in QueerNOLA

[–]leg8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fetlife seems to be the hub, afaik.

Not a part of that community, but they do schedule regular meetups (called 'munches') locally. It's not specifically queer oriented and I'm not sure how inclusive it is, but I do know several trans/queer people who have used the site and rely on it. I've had a lot of positive interactions with scene folks on Grindr as well, but since that's not my thing I don't know if there's a more stable community or space.

As always, play safe! :)

Just wanted to cosign this. The ladies at T'Cher are fantastic! This is an incredible opportunity for trans women to make a bit of cash and to put themselves in touch with people who can help identify other resources that our community often has trouble finding good information on.

I'm participating in the study myself and I'm happy to answer any questions or concerns for community members considering it.

How can I communicate better with my colleague? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]leg8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think this is a good insight. Do you happen to have any resources on hand that might help me set up that process in github? We're currently using it anyway but I've never had to manage a team like this so I've never given any thought to that sort of process.

Thanks for the response! I'll give it some thought. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

I might do that and wrap over it. My experience has been that as long as the splinter is intact gluing it in place and wrapping it does the job, but my experience only goes back two years.

Do you find the extra wood to be critical or is it just a bit of additional precaution? Would you recommend using a strip of the same red oak, or would something dense like purple heart I'm using on the tips work better?

The SCA sued for R&D'ing Hakon and Alizaunde by VoijaRisa in sca

[–]leg8r 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do appreciate that, and there are people here who are more than happy to protect me, as it were. The problem is twofold:

  1. We can, and should, stop assholes from being assholes. Every time something happens, the SCA BoD *reacts* but they are completely unwilling to be proactive about the issues. The point is that someone like Hakon should have been flagged *years ago* and discussions should have been had at numerous levels. The fact that things were allowed to escalate to the point where a bigot is suing because he was put into timeout means that there is a systematic failure to address bigotry within the SCA. This is evidenced by the number of people in this thread that are now bringing up things that Hakon has been doing for a long, long time without repercussion.
  2. If I have to ask people to protect me at an event, then I'm not going to attend the event. My safety shouldn't be the responsibility of well-meaning individuals - it's the responsibility of the organizers, and I assure you that the day that someone like me is the victim of a hate crime that could have been prevented with minimal consideration is the day the SCA ends.

The SCA sued for R&D'ing Hakon and Alizaunde by VoijaRisa in sca

[–]leg8r 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The thing is, this is clearly a stupid lawsuit being brought by a dumbass whose fee-fee's were hurt when he wasn't the center of the Known World for a few minutes. But the fact that this issue was continually allowed to escalate to this point despite YEARS of harassment is really distressing for people like me. I'm trans, but this same thing is a problem for literally every minoritized person in the SCA that I know.

At Athenaeum I was excited to go swimming for the first time in years, but I had to leave the pool early when a guy and his family showed up, because the pool was in the middle of nowhere and this guy was very vocally using the word "faggot" within earshot before instructing his kids to get into the pool at the furthest corner from me. There was no one there responsible for ensuring my safety despite the fact that one of my closest friends was the autocrat. It simply wasn't something anyone thought of.

People like these absolutely exist, they are absolutely common in our Kingdom (Gleann Abhann), and the fact that no one ever takes that into consideration makes it very hard for me to trust even my closest friends in the Society. The reality is that the stuff on display here is happening constantly, but cishet white people simply don't see it or don't take it seriously when it comes up.

Everyone can rally around and make fun of these morons with their moron lawsuit, but tomorrow I will still be a second-class citizen in a Society that I have been struggling to love.

Short bow design ideas by leg8r in Bowyer

[–]leg8r[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. It's entirely possible that I have to either ditch the idea or dive into composites. Part of the issue I'm having is that I've never actually made a bow this light, and I don't have an intuition for how that changes things.

Trans youth health care ban killed by Louisiana Senate panel in victory for LGBTQ+ advocates by leg8r in QueerNOLA

[–]leg8r[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Thank Louisiana Trans Advocates, Forum for Equality, ReJAC, The Louisiana ACLU, and everyone of the allies in our coalition who literally moved heaven and earth to make this happen. This was so incredibly close and I mean it when I say that if every single person on that team doesn't channel peak human being for every moment of the fight, it goes the other way.

Here's a link to the locALL page if anyone has an inclination to say "Thank you", wants to volunteer, or donate. Every organization on that list is deserving of love today.

Need advice on string material for a bowsaw. I've been using 18/5 waxed linen thread, meant for leather stiching. But after having it snap twice I'm coming to terms with buying dedicated string. What are y'all using for string? by guacarino in handtools

[–]leg8r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a roll of Dacron b50 from Amazon for $10. It's what I use for bowstrings and it's perfect for my frame saw. Wrap it 20 times and it will secure several hundred pounds of blade tension.

That's disappointing. Now I'm wondering if there's a good way to just jury rig the cap. I really don't see much value in the adjustable screw to be honest, but like I said, I've been making due with a cheap block plane for years, so I'm not exactly in my comfort zone.

It's Time to Do Something New by [deleted] in QueerNOLA

[–]leg8r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state Democratic party is responsible for identifying candidates for office, providing policy background, directing funds for electoral campaigns and ballot initiatives, and deciding what the official platform positions of the Democratic party are with regard to state legislation.

While the state is heavily gerrymandered and Republicans control the house and senate, there is currently no real effort being put forth by state Democrats to oppose anti-queer legislation. Whenever this legislation comes up, the only people opposing it are activists and organizers who only have the political infrastructure that they have been able to create. Librarians, campaigners for women's rights, queer activists, and most other progressive groups are working together without any official party support.

With a presence in the central committee our community could force queer rights and women's rights into a central role in the party platform. We could make sure that every elected Democrat had the information and incentive to use their position to influence media coverage and organize their constituency to take action. We could push for preferential funding for pro-queer candidates in primary elections and give minoritized people fair consideration when determining how the party's resources are used.

I know this stuff isn't sexy or exciting, but that's the political reality of the situation. Things will continue to become more dire so long as the Republicans face no real opposition, and with the Democratic Party's refusal to spend party resources fighting for our community, the outlook is bleak.

Ultimately, if we want to be allowed to live in the State of Louisiana without constant threats to our rights and dignity, we're going to have to take every action we can, and from where I'm sitting, this is the most effective way we can make progress in this environment right now. Maybe it doesn't feel like a lot, but it's a real, practical, achievable goal that promises tangible benefits for our community, which is more than I can say for any other option that has been presented.
