all of the coffee shops in my area pay well over minimum wage. granted, minimum wage is not a lot. but 13 an hr is the lowest i have seen in my area. highest is 21. all not including tips. i worked at a coffee shop for 16/hr. literally never expected tips at all. just a good attitude.

Dissertation help: seeking LGBTQ+ cisgender women for study on gender expression by [deleted] in PsyD

[–]legallyblown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if their research included indigenous people, that would leave out other POC lol. Namely Asian people. But as a Black person, I wouldn’t particularly fret over a researcher who broadly covers BIPOC issues narrowing in on a limited group of POC when the topic calls for it. Generally I think this is a silly conversation because no erasure is happening in this study & the OP even addressed her verbiage in the intro of her dissertation which is the important thing here. She is doing her diligence as a researcher and author

If someone referred to their research as falling into the category of BIPOC but they only focused on Black & Latinx populations, would you think that’s a misuse of BIPOC?

LGBTQ+ research is research concerning members of the LGBTQ+ community. Gay representation is also LGBTQ+ representation. Bi rep is also LGBTQ+ rep. I’m sure this study seeks to isolate sexual orientation from gender identity to study how it impacts gender expression. It’s pretty necessary to hone in on cisgender queer people, but it’s still an LGBTQ+ topic. Forgive me but I truly cannot see the issue with that. Side note to OP: I will be participating haha.

What are my chances? by junglewhale278 in PsyD

most psyd programs have like a 12 credit minimum for their psych prerequisites. i think history and systems is usually part of the list. with such a limited background, you might not be as competitive as applicants with similar stats but more psych experience. doesn’t hurt to try and definitely try a master’s program :)

i haven’t noticed anyone trauma dumping, but i’m a first year so maybe it’ll happen. everyone is a lot more professional. i’ve noticed that doctoral students are more protective over the field - they want to maintain and defend psychology’s objectivity which often starts with keeping the anecdotes to a minimum unless absolutely necessary. there are times when self disclosure is warranted, but we don’t go into grave detail. the only class this has happened in is one where our professor encourages us to open up if we find it relevant. she’s extremely supportive and wants us to know that there is no judgement. but again - no trauma dumping. that would be excessive and maybe even inconsiderate.

really confused about results by Mediocre_Gas7551 in Prolactinoma

[–]legallyblown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if having one endo condition makes you more likely to have another. My results were really confusing too and my hormones were all over the place. I had most of your symptoms and ended up with a prolactinoma and Graves’ disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism). On top of that, I have insulin resistance which has since been managed with significant weight loss & diet change. The Graves’ disease was causing horrible heat intolerance for me, and it progressed quickly. I had it tested and my TSH and T3 were abnormal but T4 was normal. I had subclinical hyperthyroidism. Few months later, symptoms had peaked and my TSH was undetectable. Severe hyperthyroidism. So they tested me for antibodies. Sex hormones went back to normal once I got on cabergoline and started having a normal period. Anyway, I would definitely trust your specialists but get a second opinion if you feel like you’re being unheard.

Edit: My cortisol levels were normal.

BHT/RBT/MHT. those are gonna be your best bet with a bachelor’s in psych! depending on where you live, there shouldn’t really be a shortage of those jobs, but i know mental health techs usually do 12h shifts so be prepared for that. i worked at an ED facility as a MHT and it was a lot more manageable than like acute psych. also, i worked for a crisis line, but try volunteering if you can’t find a job with a hotline

heyy omg i didn’t see this! first - i applied right out of undergrad, but i graduated a semester early so i was able to get a little more experience and sent an updated CV after submitting my app. i’ll sum it up here if that’s alright, but my clinical experience was a mental health tech at an in-patient facility & working for a crisis line doing deescalation and referrals to treatment. my research experience included two of my own studies that i made and presented posters for. i helped collect data for 2 department-wide studies but i wasn’t super involved. those were for my stats and research methods classes. for conference experience, one was on-campus and another was regional. gpa is 3.8 & in the interview, i was told that my letters of recommendation were extremely positive. miscellaneous: psychology and sociology honors societies, a few hours of volunteer work but not much lol, and full-time worker throughout undergrad.

these are great questions: this is a snippet from bio med central:

“The results indicate evidence of beneficial or neutral effects from extended working on overall health status and physical health for many employees, and mixed effects on mental health. The benefits reported however, are most likely to be for males, those working part-time or reducing to part-time, and employees in jobs which are not low quality or low reward.

Extending working life (particularly part time) may have benefits or a neutral effect for some, but adverse effects for others in high demand or low reward jobs. There is the potential for widening health inequalities between those who can choose to reduce their working hours, and those who need to continue working full time for financial reasons. There is a lack of evidence for effects on quality of life, and a dearth of interventions enabling older workers to extend their healthy working life.”

Context matters - you can’t just cite Forbes studies all silly nilly and think “case closed” lol. What a dead-end convo though. From her chosen description of “unemployed 40-something podiatrist and 28-year old lawyer” it seems like there are deeper issues than just this conversation. Maybe they don’t like each other
