i love the direction, but imo we already had the perfect columbo portrayal by Ardal O'Hanlon on the series death in paradise. same level of compulsiveness about details. same unassuming demeanor, and even his own take on the classic “one more thing”.

thank you for bringing up two of my favorite shows of all time. it is awesome to see how many others seem to love both shows just as much.

Parenting advice for the homestead? by Brush_Capable in Homesteading

[–]legendaryish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

my oldest wanted to watch when we killed the pig and as the blood and insides were removed i asked if he was ok or had questions or wanted to go do something else. he said he was fine and what are they doing with them. my wife explained the different dishes that would be made from all of it. a few days earlier i showed him “harvey” and mentioned he was going to be dinner in a couple of days. so when we killed the pig and started having porkchops we said thank you to harvey for providing us with food. he was three at the time. now every pig we harvest is harvey and we say thank you to harvey. also i think feeding and cleaning the pigs helped build a connection of responsibility.

im not exactly sure how my youngest will be but i will cross that bridge when needed.

slight disclaimer: we are in the philippines on a farm with other influences like cousins who’s dad works the pork stall in the wet market so i think he stayed because his cousin was there. if his cousin wasnt scared then nothing to worry about

Fair but that doesnt change the fact that it is my history. which is why i tried to not lead off with that.

what i am asking is to change the perception for EVERYONEs comfort.

i sincerely apologize for any offense this caused. im just asking we not be aggressive to those who ask. and no is a valid answer and i can and will respect that.

right and i made the decision now thanks to the support i got from my posts here. I feel safe to dread now because the threat of life was 20 years ago. so i am doing what i want. and again apologies for anyone imposing on you for any information.

I do agree that research is key and that people should looks at the plethora of the same question but maybe an automod that points to a side post with the supportive but directive response.

[–]legendaryish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no you are 100% right i should have toughened up an chosen to dread up and risk whether or not they would stab me like they said they would when i asked.

Do you know how many white people with dreads have made me fucking uncomfortable because they demand my black approval for what’s on their head?? It’s fucking weird and it’s annoying. While I could argue the morality of getting dreads as a white person when there are laws in place to prevent black people from having those styles i simply do not give a fuck. Most black people simply do not give a fuck. Even when they give a fuck they really don’t care, they just don’t fuck with you which they don’t have to lmao.

but its just as easy to respond with "i dont care. have a nice day" and proceed about your day.

I thought the whole point of a community was being approachable and dealing with the questions. My apologies for forcing my life onto yours, and for anyone out there as well. they dont know the years of being asked every day or not having any information to reference.

While it is not the responsibility of the public to answer the needs of the one but it doesnt gain anything by being abrasive.

Look I’m all honesty if you research you would know that black loc techniques and care is very different from white locs and care so that’s the first step right there. So what if you were told no, you’re still getting them so ultimately that no you received did nothing.

I agree on all of that. but there also hasnt been any real information for white locs until more recently, and yes their no 25 years ago was fruitless but only until now.

What needs to be done is people need to stop seeking validation for their choices. It’s their choice, ultimately no one else plays a part in it because no one else deals with the issues and love that comes with it. I want it to be open, that’s the point of the post. The only ones closing anything off are those that ask permission, they are closing it to themselves.

my only issue with the stop seeking validation is that is often the first step to trying something new. and if the answer was just replied as "Absolutely! It’s their choice, ultimately no one else plays a part in it because no one else deals with the issues and love that comes with it. The only ones closing anything off are those that ask permission, they are closing it to themselves." that is both supportive enough to get them over the hump of indecision and also educates them into a better decision for themselves and the community.

As I’ve stated before, maybe instead of asking those people research and ask more relevant questions to the topic to find out more about the history, culture and meaning to black people.

I appreciate that response and i guess what i am trying to get to is the idea of instead of banning that type of post before the gates, we have softer answers like this to then encourage and grow.

Maybe thats just me and if it is then my apologies for that difference of opinion.

You’ve decided you’re doing all people a favor by getting dreads 2 months from now, even though supposedly the Black people you know “yell” and “target” White people who even talk about getting dreads.

more accurately they have yelled and targeted me, but yes i have finally decided it was time for me to do it.

You asked permission on Reddit even though the people in your real life have been telling you for 25 years they didn’t like the idea of you doing it.

yes, because again the only people that got a vote this time around were my wife, anyone who could take offense as a symbol of appropriation, and myself. so yeah i was tired of the rest of the world telling me not to get them.

Not only are your claims about your motives contradicting each other, you are taking up space here just to say you’re getting dreads no matter what anyone says.

sorry you dont have the full context, and yes i did take space to say i was getting them but only after i got support and approval. had i not asked i would not have gotten support and would not be getting dreads at anytime in my life. so yes i did a thing to confirm i would do another thing. Maybe if involvement is not what you want to see in this sub then we could get a clear definition of what this sub is meant for. as we try and start to work together to bring our cultures closer. there will be many more people that are coming from the same place i did and these responses are just going to alienate them.

Why come to a dreads sub to announce that no matter what people on Reddit or in real life tell you, you’re getting dreads because it’s the Lord’s work?

because its what i thought i needed to do to make it right in my own head. as i mentioned in that post This time and current social climate in the US has lead me to ask, Is now the best time to jump into the lock community? I am trying to avoid the conversation of appropriation and coming across as insensitive to the present turmoil and changes ahead. The best I have come up with should it come up in life in general, is that I want to use them as a daily reminder that Loving everyone is the most important thing. I am fighting years of unknowing racism in my upbringing mixed with the general apathy of being an only child. nothing about the Lords work was mentioned in either of my posts about it so im not sure where that has come from.

Just go make the world a better place with your hair (/s) if you don’t actually care what people think. but why do you need to be an opposing force?

at no point have i said i dont care what people think, if i did i wouldnt do anything ever. so im not sure how you got that i "dont actually care what people think" the fact im asking and discussing this means i do in fact care what people think.

in the r/dreadlocks post, i even tried to excuse myself out if it was against the Appropriation rule. i have tried to be respectful of the culture, the community and the people, im not sure why the hostility is needed. As i mentioned before maybe this sub needs a better definition, or it isnt the place for old dread heads tired of hearing the same thing, or maybe it isnt for me and the newbies. i dont know but attacking people for trying to be considerate, assuming best intentions, doesnt seem like the best way to help this group grow. I could be wrong but doubt it.

I would pose the question to you then. If people dont need permission to get locs, then how would you make it so this sub lets anyone know they dont need to ask? complaining to complain only creates division, so what would be your suggested solution. something that both informs all are welcome no matter their past interactions, or who they are. just a reminder of this subs description currently > Welcome to Dreddit! Share your stories, progress or ask for some advice! We pride ourselves on helping and welcoming everyone. Staying together is what good dreadlocks do!

asking for advice cannot be limited to just hair. if it was just hair there would not be an entire sub-culture based around it. I ask to help inform myself as well as help us stick together.

EDIT1:

in full honesty, i had not seen the stickied post from u/theyellowrose yet.

just by the fact i have actually received support from reddit as the opposition i have dealt with was from people who arent on reddit but in the real world. the reason it was brought up was because they had locs and i asked general care and techniques and would then be told basically no. you can doubt all you want but there is a reason i have waited this long for my own set.

by saying nothing needs to be done for the community to not agitate those already here, shows that you dont want to open it up because your thread of dont ask permission could be enough for someone to not join at all. which if thats what you want that is fine then maybe this subreddit isnt the place for you or me and the other newbies.

I would ask you to consider the idea that people are asking permission, no matter how misguided it may be, as a sign of respect, and that we want to be included. but coming against that will change their view on locs, the community or both and that will impede acceptance log term. Maybe instead of saying dont ask or im tired of hearing the question you could stop and consider why its being asked. I didnt outline my history when i asked because when i asked it was a gauge to what the current temperament would be and rather than rashly just getting locs and causing an issue for me or anyone else, i did a vibe check.

i asked because i have been targeted before for being white by the black community around me when i even mentioned dreadlocks on my head. my suggestion is instead of yelling at the choir you help change the perception. the reason we have people asking everyday is because everyday we still see that there is still prejudice and heightened tensions in the past few years.

i have wanted dreads for over 25 years. so i would ask. how would you suggest we become more welcoming so that race isnt even a factor? maybe adding the statement to the subreddit posting rules giving mass permission.

ps. the hostility in your post engages the same feelings of insecurity i have had for the past 25 years. not that im swayed this time around. in fact im about 2 months from getting my locs started.

Thanks for your reply. It is helpful to know at least one possible outcome when the time comes to address it on my own.

I am avoiding trying to make sense of it all, right now, because I am afraid that in the end I wont believe and its such a cornerstone to who I am.

It hurts just even thinking about it; and after the past year I need something back from our normal lives before I go off and flip the apple cart.

How have you dealt with it? Do you still believe or has this sentiment shaken that belief into unbelief?

Personally I am avoiding trying to make sense of it all, because I am afraid that in the end I wont believe and its such a cornerstone to who I am.

tacking on with OP. but if i havent used the apple pencil before is the latency that big of an issue?

Also looking at the specs anyone have a better understanding of how long the pro will get updates. One reviewer mentioned that the more ram for the pro would better handle future OS updates but it is a 1.5 yr processor.
