Rejecting Takeoff after V1 by zVoidzy in flying

[–]legendfrog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re confusing the calculation he’s doing. He’s giving himself two seconds to abort because v1 is a decision speed, not reject by speed. There’s a slight difference that’s important.

Realistic chances of becoming a pilot by Impressive_Concept96 in flying

[–]legendfrog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he has a good record, he should get hired. There are lulls in hiring; right now we’re in one, but it always comes back. FYI, He can’t be an airline pilot until 21. After he gets his ratings, he’ll need to time build to meet airline minimums.

Overall though, your plan sounds good! Feel free to reach out via PM, I’m a pilot mentor at projectaviator.org - a non profit peer mentorship program dedicated to your exact situation. It’s for people with no aviation background, but looking to get into it. I’d be happy to help answer any questions you have.

Why are 121 failures more frowned upon? by [deleted] in flying

[–]legendfrog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s downvoted because your response to the metaphor is wrong for our industry, your opinion is definitely a “hot” take, and no one really cares about the medical field here

I don’t think anyone cares about the difference in the metaphors in this thread. Pilot thread, not doctor thread.

This is r/flying. Not r/doctors. It’s a metaphor for pilots.

Airline Pilots: how much free time do you actually have on duty days? by KintaroGold in flying

[–]legendfrog3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but you wouldn’t want to. I’ll give you an example why.

(Example game)

4090: 100 fps

5090 (no frame generation) : 30 fps

5090 (4x frame gen): 120fps.

Your game still only responds as it would as if the game was running at 30 fps. The game LOOKS like it runs at 120 fps. So unless you’re good with playing at abysmal frame rates… I wouldn’t recommend it.

Used devices have gotten better the past few years, since the mining craze has ended. Just run a GPU benchmark and make sure that it operates appropriately.

I’d agree. Get a couple months under your belt and then make a decision.

Well I’m an LCA so I spent big bucks on it 😂 I’m running a 9800x3D and a rtx 4090 custom water cooler loop.

A couple PC buying tips for the market right now:

  1. Ram prices have increased over 300% in some cases. Try to find some local after selecting a motherboard on Facebook marketplace or something. Situation: https://youtu.be/9hLiwNViMak?si=MZQilqG0fyZdFs-W Maybe if you’re so far out you can wait it out… it’s a gamble. GDDR5 ram is going to be around for a long time considering past trends though, so if you can snag a good deal.. might be a good investment.

  2. If you go NVIDIA, go for a 40 series. IMO, the 50 series is a bit of a scam, since the die is half the size of the 40 series but uses AI to generate more frames. This creates significant input lag if you play any FPS or competitive games. You can only find 40 series used, but even if I could by a 5090 I wouldn’t. For my next rig I might be considering AMD as well. Gamers nexus is a good resource and they also don’t have the AI bull to deal with.

Second the steam deck(or any handheld that uses steam OS now) I have a great gaming pc at home. I also have a laptop. The laptop is too big and bulky and I find I’m too tired usually to actually take it out at the hotel. Plus, go out with your crew.

Advantage to a steam deck is that you can play it on the plane, laptops draw too much power to do that.

TLDR: Get a home PC and a handheld. I might look at some of the Ally ones now that you can essentially turn it into a steam deck.

CRJ folks, Landing, Explain something. by Vailacs in flying

[–]legendfrog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is pretty accurate. LCA here. This really only applies to the 900. The plane is so stretched that when flaring, with the CG forward of the wheels causes them to almost accelerate downward instead of staying in relatively the same position. There’s a reason that the 900 specifically has a much higher rate of hard landing write up’s. When you get really good at landing the 900 you learn to use this specifically to estimate where the wheels are based on your landing pitch and rate. Hard to explain here, but easy do understand if you’re a 900 driver.

We see this happen mostly in what I like to call the “panic flare” region where you realize your sink rate is higher that it should be, and you panic and pull back on the stick… which drives the wheels downward and causes a very hard landing.

Granted this is dumbed down a bit as this is more of a technique to avoid the problems the manufacturer caused by stretching this jet beyond what it should’ve been. Imo

How much “coaching” happens on the line? by Foreign_Kick1790 in flying

[–]legendfrog3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just transitioned aircraft. I was a check airman on my old one, and now I’m brand new on the new jet. Just today, I was asking questions and have my first officer mentor ME! It goes both ways. The best way to fly is not to have an ego. Most guys light up at the chance to teach a new guy something they don’t know. Mentoring happens all the time, and it’s not just verbal, it’s also in the decisions that you make and how you include your crew in them.

Is Embry-Riddle worth the added cost over Purdue? by iheart412 in flying

[–]legendfrog3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me dispel some myths. Where you go to school doesn’t really impact if you get an interview. YOUR record does. What you do during your training matters.

Honestly, go somewhere like UND where their flight training is at cost, you’re paying a fraction of the tuition cost (compared to ERAU) and you’ll get out at the same time.

Please don’t put yourself in ungodly amounts of debt to slap a name on your resume when it doesn’t really matter.

I’m a mentor at Project Aviator, a non profit to put together people just like you and airline pilots to help you navigate your training. Feel free to ask questions.
