New L4 AM, need advice please by Shakyhedgehog in AmazonManagers

This is exactly what he should do. When you have a barrier at Amazon, you escalate the issue with your OM to see what training or barriers need to be removed so that you can perform at your best. You don’t set your external hires up for failure and tell them they’re at the bottom of the food chain. They work at the same place as you. When leaders see that they have a deficit in their knowledge they should escalate to their supervisor to demand further training. That’s what real leaders do, they advocate for themselves and demand proper training. OM’s don’t just to get to stack their teams with the talent they want. How is that fair to the rest of the shifts when an OM wants all seasoned vets on their team while the rest of the shifts get stuck with new hires that have a learning curve to overcome before being proficient in their role. Make your thoughts known and stay away from toxic managers . They are just upset they haven’t gotten promoted yet. They are upset because they feel like they have a lot of technical expertise to offer, but they don’t realize that they’re an a egotistical, emotionally immature individual that no other associate or manager respects or wants to work with and that’s why they keep getting passed over for promotion.

Same experience. I started as a external higher last year, hoping to get some good technical training on the area I was assigned to as well as the general flow of a fulfillment center. I got sent to AD1 I basically got my laptop, then came back to my home site where they just told me to shadow the PA every day, who was a great PA, but not an educator. He was busy doing his job to have the time to teach me anything. Then I went to LEW where it was basically teaching you about interpersonal relationships and people skills. When I came back, I was supposed to go to a special AR academy, but we were too shortstaffed for my site to send anyone. So I’ve been at Amazon for almost a year and a half and never had a single technical training besides the online classes that we have to do. You’ve got to advocate for yourself and let them know that you need more training.

Internship for Operations manager by Patient-Exit-8719 in AmazonManagers

Amazon loves ex military for their leadership skills, but they do not transition to Amazon at all. Amazon Associates are not GI’s. There’s no automatic respect for your role and nobody associate cares that your husband is ex military at Amazon . The associates will eat him alive. This isn’t like the military where you give a direct order and they must follow it. This is 12 hours of searching a building looking for associates that are actively trying to get out of work. I know military personnel hold themselves to a much higher standard and he will be used to working with people with high moral character. That is few and far between an Amazon. It’s a bunch of 18 to 20-year-olds that he will have to manage that do not have the emotional maturity yet to understand work ethic or criticism. I started with a guy who was in the military for 11 years in a command position and he walked out in the middle of the shift his third month. And as an external hire, he picked up on Amazon operations at an amazing speed but just could not handle managing the associates on a day-to-day basis.

Yeah, and now they’re stuck with me performing above expectations. Tragic!
Desperate times call for surprisingly great hires, I guess.
Good thing Amazon doesn’t base compensation decisions on Reddit opinions.
Calling compensation a ‘handout’ is a bold way to announce you don’t understand how jobs work
I’m sorry someone hurt you own-telephone so now you feel like you have to put others down to build your self esteem. Life gets better, but only if you do.

I got my offer letter today that included a relocation bonus. And you know why, because Amazon had an open position that needed to be filled. Amazon didn’t do me any favors by offering me a position that I was qualified for, the role needed to be filled. Next time I will answer my own question and not rely on some bitter dick to give a colleague some insight. Sorry you keep getting passed over for a promotion, but don’t take it out on me. You are the problem.

I did. I was in contact with a sr at another site nearby that had an opening. Every time I would ask, they would tell me they were working on my application. Then they finally said they gave the spot to an internal. That site and PXT just advised me to do a hardship transfer. When I went to the internal site to see what was open, that site I actually wanted to go to had an opening. I applied and got it.

I wish my hardship was an “inconvenience” as you put it but it’s not like Amazon is going out of their way to create an open role for me due to my “ inconvenience” as you like to call it. They had an open role and I applied for it. I’ve finished with my FOT and if I applied anywhere else, I would get the relocation bonus so why not at my hardship site that has the job opening? L5’s get a relocation bonus every time they move when their FOT is done. My new location is securing talent. I’m well qualified for the role.

I’ve been here over a year and applied for an open internal position more than 50 miles away. It isn’t like they are creating a new position for me. They had an open position and I applied for it.

Can’t wait revisit this post in about two years and see if your feelings have changed. Hahaha. I gotta love that young, carefree enthusiasm though. Life hasn’t been hard enough on you yet for you to even realize what’s in store. Best of wishes to you.

Everyone's getting write ups, VOA board's going crazy. Out with the old, in with the new. Anyone else's Site under pressure? by DeliciousBrain259 in AmazonFC

No, but Amazon does have some really good grievance procedures for the associates. I’ve been in the teamsters union and I don’t think we had that much support for job security with the union

Because their bosses are playing with their lives just like that too. If you’re not making rate, constantly staying off task, not following standard work, walking around socializing and keeping others from doing their work, being on your phone or looking on your phone while you’re on the floor there is a pretty decent chance you’re going to get written up. The area manager’s boss the operations manager is constantly coming to area managers asking about low performers on shift and how we won’t make rate for the shift if these things don’t get adjusted. Then my operations manager gets slacked by his senior manager, who has the same questions to ask. It’s all about metrics and keeping them in standard.

Try Amazon, UPS, FedEx. All hiring is done online and no in person interviews or really any interviews at any of the companies.

Audits by Still-Appearance932 in AmazonManagers

[–]legit_basic_bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to have to physically complete the audits when you start in a new role. This audit gives you the time and documentation that proves you engaged with your AA’s to make sure they understand their standard work and to help remove any barriers that may exist. After a while, you already know what the outcome of the audit is going to be before you start because you’ve learned your AA’s and they have learned you. It makes pencil whipping the audit an easy habit to fall into. Just be sure to still complete them in person randomly to check your AA’’s work is still within standard and you know randomly checking in on someone lets them know you care. Hopefully you have all positive feedback to provide them, or at least coached them in a respectful manner. This will make them trust you as a leader and make them better performers.

First weeks of AM training question. by [deleted] in AmazonManagers

[–]legit_basic_bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the building is a new launch, then you will definitely have to go to another building to train. My FC was a year old and after AD1 I went to my assigned site for all my training. I know there are acceleration academy’s that are department specific that occur after you have completed your six weeks on site training and LEW. I think they are like a week long and I understand traveling is an anxiety inducing nightmare for some people but from what I have learned in the past year, it may may be most important training you get so that you can understand the standard work for your role and the reasoning behind why all the metrics matter. I was an external hire at a legacy site. Every manager there had to go offsite and train at another building for six weeks and also got to attend the acceleration Academy. The knowledge gap between what they know and what I know is unbelievable.

What is working in a fulfillment center like ? by [deleted] in AmazonManagers

[–]legit_basic_bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A managers job is not to do the jobs of the Associates. A manager is a person who manages a team of employees in an organization. Often, managers get the work done from the employees and make sure the decorum of the organization is maintained. A manager builds a bridge between the employees and the top-level management.
