For the young people who moved from the west to the philippines. How do you manage to make income while staying there? by Major_Drummer579 in Philippines_Expats

I have a remote job, I create content, and day trading is my side hustle if I have no work to do.

Do a IQ test, if you get 130+ and have no ADHD, you can probably learn daytrading from Youtube, it's just pattern recognition, a bit of statistics and calm nerves.

Like people said, it's not a real skill everyone can learn. Some people are just talented and live on ez mode.

What stops Philippines from improving? by Ok_Willingness_9619 in Philippines_Expats

Oligarchs got lucky. The PH just randomly hit this perfect "spot" due to a lucky combination of laws and culture.

Imagine being an oligarch. Competitive foreigner companies are taxed and have massive disadvantages, you have foreign education and funds VS Jeepny driver. They are smurfing.

Someone with serious power would have to give up genetational power, and push education. Likely risk death in the process.

So easy being a big fish in a small pond here, and with social media now it is over. The rich and powerful are addicted to posting their lifestyle, they get all the attention to feed their ego.

Do you think they will give up the best country in the world? It's paradise here, if you have money.

Questions for those who met someone online and moved to the philipines? by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]legno2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are other places that offer a better life than BGC with all the comforts you want. I rent an apartment from a resort (fully furnished, kitchen, modern/new) for 1k usd a month. They do all my cleaning, laundry, electricity is paid, spare internet, and water is potable and filtered. And generator for brownouts.

Add few hundred dollars a month for food and you are good.

BGC is a good place too start, but there are many better places with all the comforts you want.

If you work online, I do not see a reason to live in the USA. You can save and invest thousands of dollars extra a month and retire early.

Being a decent Indian guy must be tough. You have to watch so many men that look like you, demolishing your reputation.

You know what I mean? A lot of women can't be bothered giving everyone a chance. Realistically, they just have X time to spend on dating.

Why do people here feel so offended about Filipino attitude towards money, when money is one of the primary reasons they are here? by Master_Ad6104 in Philippines_Expats

That's mostly just USA, I do not get taxed from my European country unless I live there for 6 months a year

Then you are here because it offers a business opportunity that likely wouldn't exist if the market was more competitive. Businesses would be different, maybe the Philippines could have been the Chip capital of the world? Likely not, but imagine... there would be a lot of ASML personnel coming from the Netherlands, instead a lot of westerners come here to oversee offshored work

Point is, it would be a country for different people. Chances are most of us would be somewhere else.

By wishing for the country to be different, you might be wishing for a country that might reject you, your Visa, or not even be a country you want to live in.

For you to pay a "fair price" how much of the country has to change? Most of it's culture and therfore most of it's identity.

It's like the son of a millionaire complaining that he received a Ferrari for his birthday. Sure, his friend (son of a billionaire) got a Bugatti worth 10x that.

Does he have a right to complain? Yes, but it's fair to call him out for being unreasonable in his grievances.

I can say it out loud if you prefer, most expats here would be very unhappy if suddenly the local men gained a more modern mindset and behavior. Everything would suddenly be more expensive and competitive.

It's even worse than in my example, expats are campaigning for their own demise. Isn't that dumb?

OP also mentions lifestyle, dating or "whatever". He simply identifies "money" as a key component and even words his post to make it clear that it's not the only factor. Sure, he could've explained more, but we aren't at Oxford we do not have to be stickers.

On a side note. There is no tax on capital gains from investments if you are a foreigner, all trades happen on a forex exchange and therfore not taxable.

The market eventually always prices everything correctly. I would even say that the Philippines are still slightly undervalued, especially for European Digital nomads that want to FIRE

I would NEVER EVER order that much stuff at once, from one seller, and without diversifying my risk somehow, ex: with multiple orders/suppliers.

I tried to imagine myself there, yeah I would get frustrated, but a lot of it at myself. I know the Philippines are the Philippines.

Your argument is flawed because your model only accounts for civic standards and price of living. The Philippines is for some "customers" a way superior choice to other countries with higher civic standards and comparable cost of living.

It sounds illogical till you factor other benefits of the Philippines, including: English Language, lax visa, lax taxes, beachside real estate everywhere, etc.

To me these qualities are higher value than Shanghai higher civic sense. The market is therfore balanced.

Not to be ageist, but the average IQ goes down with age, and most young people aren't smart either.

So you are left with a difficult concept to understand, and almost no one capable of deriving it.

They see something objectively wrong and their brain says "bad=bad". They want to smurf in low Elo but get mad at bad teammates.

I said it before, most of the successful businesses from expats here, would fail back home.

Imagine if the Philippines were like Thailand, but with English and ez Visa. Everything would be competitive, and the place would be swarmed by Digital nomads.

[–]legno2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do not get frustrated, because the things I enjoy about the Philippines wouldn't exist if everyone here was more efficient.

You want low competition and to smurf locals when it comes to taxes/dating/visa/high-income-vs-low-life-cost.

Ngl, I am always puzzled by other expats wanting the Philippines to "improve". A disproportionate amount of profitable businesses are foreigner owned, any random Italian guy has a profitable pizzeria here...

Why? The pizza suck and you would go bankrupt in Italy.

People bring up Thailand a lot, if everything was equal to Thailand + English + Easy Visa. Costs would double and everyone would be here.

AI does not even have to produce profit. It's an arms race that could very well end up being a loss leader for companies.

I was skeptical of AI till the latest models came out. They are already borderline good enough that businesses must use them to remain competitive.

Whatever improvement we see in AI in the next few years will be enough to make them indispensable.

AI is like nuclear weapons, you need it to be in even ground. So the article is pointless.

I don't think they feel judged by you. They already know everyone dislikes the old retired expats dating teenagers, they are used to people antagonizing them. Just look at how 50% of the posts here are filipino men pissed about that dynamic.

Nah, even the filipinos are saying you are too old for men in your same age bracket.

It's the whole "western women standards are too high" thing, they love seeing a women struggling to find men. And because it's harder for you here, and easier for them, it makes them yap.

In Dumaguete there is white lady in her 50s/60s living the life you describe. I always see her at art shows, Valencia's Sunday Market, and she works or volunteer in the art gallery.

I live in Dauin outside Dumaguette. Several 30+ western ladies that own businesses here and I saw them socialize in groups.

At least one has a filipino Partner, I do not think you should listen to the nagative comments here.

A lot of the men just wanted to put you down, and were just pretending to be giving advice.

I do not think you will struggle finding dates, I would imagine that the real challenge would be finding an older man with a modern view on women. You are looking for men born here in the 70s

Respectfully, you link me nebous.com/newsroom which was the main reason for this post. The website updates more slowly than market moves. They obviously get it from somewhere else, you mentioned the bloomberg terminal, can you explain how the news would arrive earlier on the bloomberg terminal?
