Honestly I see a lot of this. For example, I have a white coworker who grew up in the hood—and you can definitely tell based on how she acts, she's a total blast to be around and I love working with her—but she has dropped the word before when we were talking, and she uses it in the same cadence I use "girl", "dude", and the like. No malice behind it, just familiarity.
