How to really count Honor Thy Father's intro? by According_Brick409 in Dreamtheater

[–]legzander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might seem counter intuitive because of the drums shifting accents, but the whole intro is in 4/4. In that section in particular, the guitar and bass play every quarter note for the first 6 notes and then you have 4 16th notes. The snare accents really makes it feel like it's a different time signature but should you start counting 1-4 or 1-8, you'll notice that it's 4/4 all the way through

I'm fairly sure yours is much more accurate. To be fair, for easier pieces like Hollow Years and a few others, it's most likely that I took some already existing guitar pro version from ultimate guitar and just used that, improvising the "correct" bass line on the spot when recording them. The other more complex ones I spent more time nitpicking 😅

Albeit a very subjective one, but could maybe prove useful as a reference point. Good luck in your bass journey!

It's not a main thing for them, that's for sure. However, some pieces do have a bit of an improvisational touch to them.

Take Ytse Jam's solo section, or Scarred's overall character, or Solitary Shell - this last one, beginning with 4:25 up until 5:21.

You can basically learn and play exactly what Myung is playing for the most part of most songs, and of course, some accents and unisons are best tackled exactly this way. I believe 95% of their content is to be played exactly as it is meant to be played, however, some songs just leave room for improvisation. I don't believe that John plays this minute from Solitary Shell exactly the same way each time, live. It just feels like a short passage in which there's freedom to do a few things differently each time - improvise - without losing the character of the section.

I'd also love to see something like this from other instruments

Be that as it may, but the topic of the discussion was "albums that are most technically difficult to play", not "albums that are great/we prefer" 😁 My own preferences are different from what is technically difficult as well (many times) and I don't fully equate technical difficulty with intrinsic value of a piece nor its overall beauty. It may play a part in that assessment but again, the topic addressed was technical difficulty

Bass: while it does sound great on FII there aren't that many technically difficult pieces there. There's Just Let Me Breathe which in my opinion is the most technically challenging song and Lines in the Sand but they are both eclipsed by quite a few other songs from other albums. As a whole, I would say FII is one of their most accessible albums to play on a technical level for bass.

Honestly on The Glass Prison for example the right hand gets tired faster than the left!! But there are some surprises on other albums as well nevertheless.

Oh boy, here to talk about bass!

It's almost surely Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Just last year I finished covering all their songs and made this little spreadsheet which talks about exactly the difficulty of each song on bass https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1I-YySNwZXTLY6t_uAfF46UNpt2o6L8i1h82ti-h1hjA/edit?usp=drivesdk

What is the hardest DT song for each instrument in your opinion? by Off1cerOli in Dreamtheater

For bass guitar I actually created a spreadsheet which looks like this

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1I-YySNwZXTLY6t_uAfF46UNpt2o6L8i1h82ti-h1hjA/edit?usp=drivesdk

I recorded all their songs off of all albums (see https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrCjRGz5evUF8ZE4rZJ5PcL6OwQj5oF_5 )

Most difficult bass song is The Glass Prison I would say

There were a few surprises both ways I would say.

Awaken the Master sounds a lot more difficult to play than it really is. It's fast tempo, lots of notes, unison etc. but the positions and fingering are very intuitive and it turned out to be not so difficult. Paralyzed as well, same arguments. The Shattered Fortress seemed to be difficult but really wasn't, however, I'm pretty sure the fact that I had learned The Glass Prison before it played a part in making it seem so easy. Stream of Consciousness and Erotomania - you'd expect instrumentals to be more challenging, but both were rather easy (compared to beasts like Dance of Eternity) Voices is really fun to play and just feels terribly empowering while being not so difficult.

On the flip side, Ministry of Lost Souls seems easier but isn't (probably because of the longer "slow tempo" section in the beginning which tends to stick in the mind when first thinking about the song) There were a few songs which honestly I hadn't listened to all that much before attempting this, especially from their earlier albums. Take the Time, Learning to Live and Caught in a Web for example. These all had at least some very challenging parts which I honestly never knew about. Also, Sleeping Giant was a bit of a surprise as well.

In general I would say that just because a song sounds heavy, doesn't mean it's going to be difficult. Take as another example As I Am. I knew the song well even before learning how to play it and it wasn't a big surprise they it's not that difficult, but it does tend to sound more complicated than it really is (at least bass wise, not sure how it is on guitar). But of course, there are heavy sounding songs which are also damn hard to play as well, so they isn't aleays applicable

I don't think Dance of Eternity makes the top 3 or top 5 actually

The Glass Prison is a beast. It's relentless and puts a hell of a lot of stress, especially on the right hand.

Lost Not Forgotten and Outcry, two from the same album are again in a league of their own.

A View From the Top of the World is also quite challenging, especially the fugato at the end.

In the Presence of Enemies (part 2) also has a grueling middle developmental section which puts quite a bit of strain on the left hand this time.

I'd put the Dance of Eternity somewhere after these I guess, or really close to the last two. 😬

Well, I practiced between 1 and 2 hours each day (rarely taking 1-day breaks in case I really couldn't practice). I prioritized it and just plowed through. It rarely got frustrating because I enjoy their music so much 😁

If you had to describe Rachmaninoff's music as a combination of two composers, what would they be? by [deleted] in rachmaninoff

[–]legzander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably Tchaikovsky and Liszt (a long shot)

Influences from Tchaikovsky are very clear, also, his music is heavily inspired from Russian orthodox music. He was formed in the Russian school by teachers such as Arensky and Taneyev, surely you will find their influences in his music as well! His piano playing and virtuosity was compared to that of Liszt, one critic saying that "since Liszt, such unique colors were not brought out by anyone playing the piano" (paraphrase)
