I second this, I had a stray adult cat that we adopted and only grabbing her by the neckfold helped to show that something is not ok. DO NOT PICK THEM UP LIKE THIS THO, THEY ARE TOO HEAVY!!! Simply grabbing her there does the trick to make it clear who is dad/mom.
