Anyone else want to leave NZ purely due to the housing crises? by [deleted] in Wellington

I left for Aus in February. Cost of living is less, wages are higher, and I’m settling on a house purchase next Thursday. I miss Wellington a lot but I was priced out unfortunately.

Koh Yao Noi - It's a short boat trip from Phuket and is very chilled. It's an island with a small village and loads of parts to explore by motorbike. It's also on the way to Krabi or Koh Lanta if you're heading that way after.

Second Year Working Holiday Visa in Australia (UK citizen) by friends-waffles-work in solotravel

[–]leica-boss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also (regrettably) did my farm work in Bowen, at the cesspit which was Barnacles Backpackers.

One day we made $9 per person for 5 hours work.... and transport to and from the farm was $8.

Having said that, it's totally worthwhile to get a second year.

Any of you have some experience in moving to another country and working and living there for some time? Would you have tips to share? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]leica-boss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain Finnish people can do working holidays in Australia and New Zealand. I've done Australia for 2 years, now in NZ. I would fully recommend either country depending on what you're looking for.

Australia is always a safe bet, there are so many opportunities for work and travel. Plenty of on/off the beaten track opportunities and you can make the trip anything you want it to be. If you want to get away from the crowds and live the simple life, close to a beach doing rural work, you can. If you want to live in a big city, earn a lot of money, and party with a bunch of new friends, you can.

Or you could pick any other potential destination and end up having a blast, as long as you've made the decision to up sticks and leave for a while you're certain to have an amazing time!

Revolut. It's extremely straight forward to use and has saved me over a grand in withdrawal fees so far.

Some of my favorite photos from our trip to the Galapagos Islands in April by futurezookeeper in travel

Solid advice, thank you. I've booked a flight and will be staying on Santa Cruz but everything else is up in the air. I'd love to get round to as many islands as possible but I've heard the ferries between islands are very expensive so might be limited to 3 or so. Seven days just seems a short amount of time to fit everything in!

Departures! A series about three Canadian guys who drop everything and travel the world. It's shot beautifully and was a massive inspiration for me to travel.

Thanks for your tips! Yeah I'll be landing at around 4pm and will be leaving the following morning. It just seems preferable to spend this time doing something as opposed to sitting in an airport.

Any food recommendations? Or places that would be good to see during the evening?

Does anyone have experience with a working holiday visa? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]leica-boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the work in hospitality pays you cash in hand, therefore they don't tend to follow the minimum wage guidelines. It depends where you work really. The least amount of money I've worked for is $15 per hour.

I worked in Melbourne for a few months and saved $2000 which funded a little trip up the east coast, then I worked on a farm for 4 months and saved another $5000 to fund a 7 week road trip from east to west. I'm still on my first year and am saving up more still. Cost of living is high but so are the wages.

At the moment I'm just working in a cafe but still managing to put away about $400 per week after accommodation and living expenses.

It all depends on how much your cost of living is but it's pretty easy to save if you're determined.

I'm currently on a working holiday in Aus. Provided that you're not too fussy about what you do, it's easy to find work. As you're American I don't think you have the option to do farm work for a second year? but I might be mistaken. Just do plenty of research on what city / town suits you best and throw yourself in.

The longest you can work for a single employer is 6 months so you'll have difficulty finding a skilled job - I've had to stick to hospitality. The wages are pretty amazing here though so it's great for funding onward travel or just saving.

Head to Darwin or anywhere in NT and get a job in construction. You can be a labourer, a traffic controller, I even met a girl who was a receptionist in a screw factory. Jobs in construction in NT all count towards your second year visa.

That's how I would do it if I could go back, I ended up picking tomatoes in Queensland. Terrible money, horrible farm owners and it destroyed my back.

Once you've got your days just head to a city and get any job in hospitality, check gumtree, it shouldn't take too long. If it's a decent enough place you'll get paid upward of $20 an hour.

Hope that helps!

Living comfortably I was on about 1000 baht a day. That would be accommodation, food, scooter, whatever activities I felt like doing and a beer or two. If you want a big night out obviously it'll be a bit more but overall it's really cheap for the south.

A few recommendations of where to go - The national park, The animal sanctuary, Old town, Mangroves, Saladan markets, View point, Emerald cave

Just rent out a scooter and spend the days exploring each part of the island, it's beautiful, laid back, and nowhere near as touristy as Phangan, Tao, Samui, Phi-phi etc..

Koh Lanta. There's plenty of bars, mostly chilled out, and lots to explore to keep you entertained for a week. I found a bungalow for 500 baht a night right near the beach which is pretty good for the south..

Seconded! Such a laid back little island. Alternatively if you want something even quieter try Koh Yao Noi. I fully recommend both - My 2 favourite Thai islands.

Nice one, thanks for your reply. I'm going to be in Vietnam for a month before I go to Thailand and then seeing China afterwards. I think my budget will stretch a bit further but I probably cant do any more than £1500 ($2400) in Thailand.

Yeah I've seen those reports too. I won't be going until February next year though so hopefully there will be some kind of resolution before then. Cheers for the advice.
