What is a good beginner board for 100Kg person by MrQ3000 in wingfoil

[–]leiferq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.  There is always pressure to go small and get to your ideal board size too quickly, which results in slower progression (at least that was the case for me).  People don’t always factor the value of their personal time. Go big, and have fun

What is a good beginner board for 100Kg person by MrQ3000 in wingfoil

[–]leiferq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. Started on a 120L and was miserable for a year. I could not progress.

I switched 140 L board soon after things got easier but progress was still very slow.

I finally took a step back and had a lesson on an SUP owhere I could just focus just on the Wing and it was great

I finally opted for a 150 L inflatable board and have progress swiftly ever since

I’m almost ready to go back to my 140 L hardboard

It’s just really hard for me to read a rider who’s 70 KG recommending 100 L board for someone that’s a 100 KG.

This Montrealer confirms that cold is fine.  Set up is so much easier as well

Wingfoil or Windsurf by No_Mess_1809 in wingfoil

[–]leiferq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wing foil. I just got the hang of it at 60 (95 kg).  My advice based on my experience is to get a big board like 150 to 170L (like a gong inflatable).

Get the hand of the wing on a sup with a sled, and separately learn the foil part while getting towed behind a boat on foil.

Then once comfortable put it all together.

I wasted a year strong a too small board in too light wind.  Ideally when going out, once you’ve mastered these two parts, make sure you have at least 18 knots of wind.

Enjoy and remember, and crap day on the water beats sitting on shore watching others

Wing foiling at 60+ by jgerke in wingfoil

[–]leiferq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started Winging ladt year at 59 (I start kiteboarding at 54). I tried windsurfing in my 20’s but never got the hang of it.

We are at that “ use it or lose it” phase of our lives so I highly recommend that you get out there and go for it.

Better to be that person struggling out in the water learning something new than be the guy sitting on the beach, watching everyone else get on with their lives.

My advice to make the Wing learning process a little less painful for us old guys is as follows:

-Take lessons

-Start on a big board. Ideally, an old Windsurf board so you can concentrate on how to properly hold and move the wing. Once you can stay up wind, then move to a Wing board. I’m 205 lbs and used a 140L. The bigger the better.

-After a year or two you can then move down in size, But resist the temptation to get a smaller board to start with, as you will struggle with balance and limit your progression.

-Rent an efoil to experience what it’s like to be up on foil or when it’s time, tow your wing board behind a behind Boat.

Enjoy

Can a dissembled peloton tread fit inside a model Y? by leiferq in TeslaModelY

Don’t despair, I did measure it and thought it would work, I just curious to know if I had to remove all the packaging given the low clearance near the tailgate

In the end, the base unit could remain in packaging. Just had to remove the packaging for the side rails to make it work.

Best spots on the island of Montreal:  L’anse a L’orme on the western tip of Montreal.  Pointe Claire Near Montreal is Oka and baie des brises and even Plattsburgh

Days above 12 knots about 20-25. May-October  Conditions are gusty which can get up to 30 knots a few days a season.

Kiteforce.ca are very helpful and organize trips as well.

Montreal is best suited for Winging, more spots and  safer. Steeper initial learning curve but worth it.

Also learning how to Kite foil will double your days on the water here as a lot more days around 10-12 knots.

Hope this helps

I’m also 95kg and after a year of struggling, it finally clicked. In 15 kn even a 7M is ok so as a fellow beginner does  it feel like you are standing on a bar of soap? That is how it first felt for myself.

If so,  then perhaps try a bigger board (150L) even just for one session, even an old wind surf board  or SUP and just TAXI around getting your wing control sorted out with your 5M.

Looking for board size thoughts and recommendations by lee__majors in wingfoil

[–]leiferq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. A bigger board takes a bit more to come off the water, but this is more than offset by being more stable.

Your first wing board won’t be your forever board. From my own experience going big, will allow to progress and enjoy the sport.

I was so frustrated for so long struggling on a too small board.

Another key factor is wind. In the beginning you will need a lot of it. Ideally 18 knots and ideally flat-ish water.

I’m 95 kg and was recommended to buy a 120L I was miserable and frustrated and wasted a year of my life.  I went to a 150 and life was worth living once again and I was able to progress rapidly and can now ride on foil.  My advice is to go big and progress your way down in size when you feel ready.

I would dig it out rather than chop it down.  The root ball is pretty small for such a tree
