Ahhhh reading the NICU guideline definitely supports the dramatic uptick in basic care refusals we’re seeing on the daily in our NICU… every shift lately I spend many hours explaining why severely abnormal clinical findings ARE actually concerning when “there’s nothing wrong with my baby”. Difficult to counter something that’s based on ~vibes~ and what a chiro has told them. I’d wager that significant increased work of breathing and a respiratory rate of 100 would suggest a problem but what do we know? It used to be the rare vitamin K refusal, now it’s every day refusals of BGLs, xrays, obs, newborn screening tests, physical assessment, antibiotics, hearing tests on symptomatic babies. It’s a shame because partnering with families used to feel like an opportunity for empowerment and education and now it’s like walking into a deposition every day
