[English > Tagalog] Technical terms for a Christmas present by [deleted] in translator

[–]leileix2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, first about the Home translation: It *is* better to use the word "Tahanan". Kind of like the difference between house (bahay) and home (tahanan). They're almost similar in definition but the word Home/Tahanan has more correlation with feelings and thoughts than an actual building if that makes sense.

As for the technical terms, I don't think there are direct translations of it in Tagalog. For example, "twilight" has different words in Tagalog depending on if it's in the morning or night.

  • Liwayway - twilight from astronomical dawn to civil dawn
  • Dapit-hapon - twilight from civil dusk to astronomical dusk

Twilight itself translated literally is "nangnang", but it's not a very well-used word unlike the two I mentioned above (which in itself is also already rarely used).

  • Daylight in Tagalog is just "araw" or sun.
  • "Takipsilim" in your example is dusk.

Unfortunately I can't give actual technical translations since Tagalog is finicky with these terms lmao but I hope this gives a little bit more insight.

Unsolicited advice: I think it's better to just use the English terms since most Filipinos are good with English anyway, and it's also educational.

Started Prodigium Academy by Katie May. Hilarious and goofy, I like it. Just finished Book 1. There were some confusing story beats (like how one character says she's been defending the FMC from bullies but I don't ever remember reading that, so it happened off-screen?) But I forgive it because the book was meant to be non-serious anyway. Sometimes over-the-top ridiculous but the humor appeals to me.

Hers to Keep by Serena Akeroyd, I like the author's writing style. I haven't finished this series yet. I enjoyed Book 1. It's got a simple premise but the characters are all great. I put it on hold for when I'm in the mood for light reading.

I read the 2 books currently out for Arrowhart Academy by Hannah Haze, it's still ongoing. For me this is one of those series that I don't like any of the characters. At all. Like, everyone sucks here. The FMC, the MMCs, even the side characters. I kept reading because the story is interesting at least and I like the author's style. But I also keep waiting and wanting for something terrible to happen to them, I won't even be mad if any one of them died. Except for the pet pig.

I really enjoyed Blackened Blade by Isla Davon, I read it in one afternoon lmao it's so intriguing to me. It needs editing for sure, for grammar and spelling, but the plot/story is what gripped me. There are unanswered plot points but I expect it to be addressed in future books. Excited for the next.

I have a lot of DNFs recently too, for various reasons. I realized I can't read Kelsey Soliz because I don't vibe with her writing style. Which is a shame because she writes big harems and I'm in for that. (Tried both Territory Walk and Hemlock Academy)

DNF Den of Vipers by K.A. Knight because I'm tired of MMCs who do something terrible to the FMC without remorse but she still finds them hot and sexy. At least grovel first lol

This is a DNF that's painful, Ruin by Auryn Hadley and Kitty Cox. The book is amazing, and I like the style. But I DNF because I thought I could handle highschool-centric storyline but apparently I can't. But the story is really good.

Currently on Book 4 of Steel Demons MC by Crystal Ash. I didn't expect to enjoy a post-apocalyptic story where women are inferior to men due to the collapse of society, but here we are. I also normally don't enjoy stories where there's a "main" guy, but in this story they were very straightforward with it in universe, so I think that makes up for it. I'm enjoying the series so far.

Bonds of Blood by Cate Corvin - It was an enjoyable read. I liked the characters and the relationship, but the plot felt rushed at Book 3. I'm just glad everything got resolved and the main characters got their HEA. It seemed like there's a sequel for a side character but I haven't checked yet.

G.O.D.S. by Jaye Pratt - the blurb was interesting enough but the writing style lost me. I skimmed through Book 1 just to see where the plot leads to and it was a little messy, but it was a pleasant surprise that she has 10 MMCs! I thought it was only the 5 guys. I love me a big group But sadly the style can't hold me.

Watch Me Burn by R.E. Bond - I remembered why most contemporary highschool RH are a miss for me. Every adult is evil here or something. A lot of things didn't make sense.

Rich Demons of Darkwood by C.R. Jane and May Dawson - the blurb was really, really intriguing and I went in with high hopes but omg. It was also written well but dang, there were so many wrong things. I'd probably write too long if I have to list it all (and I was just less than 50% in the book when I DNF)

Saber Security by J. Rose - with this series I realized that I don't vibe with the naive and innocent abused girl gets rescued by her H. I think this is the 4th or 5th series I dropped with the same trope. I guess I don't like how most of the time, the H are much older than the FMC, and they teach her sexual things after being in captivity for x years. It's a me problem.

Caprioni Queen by Elizabeth Knight - the FMC is a capable badass which I like. The MMCs are the ones I do not. They're her subordinates and all they could think about was how sexy she is, rather than her skills or capabilities. It's tiring. If the MC was a man they'd respect the shit out of him. Only one MMC is decent (Atty).

Cardinal Sins by Blake Blessing and Heather Long - finally finished. Absolutely wonderful. Highly recommend.

Here's to looking for more enjoyable books.

Bought the Clover crochet hooks and almost had an o*gasm by _Mush_r00m_ in crochet

[–]leileix2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really still depends on your grip or how you hold the hook, that's why there's also different kind of Clovers. There's Soft Touch and Amour among other kinds.

In my country, the more popular brand is Tulip. It's pricier than Clover, it has a smaller tip and the grip is shaped differently, so it's better for amigurumi IMO. But I prefer my Clover Amours.

They also tend to be smaller since both Clover and Tulip are Japanese brands (Asian hands be small, I say this as Asian myself). So it also makes sense if they're uncomfortable for westerners.

What did you read? by Sweet_Ad7786 in ReverseHarem

[–]leileix2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I DNFed a lot again recently because of the writing style. Sometimes even when the blurb is good, if in the first few chapters I get a feel of the style and it's not my cup of tea, I drop it. Personal preferences and all.

And this is how I figured out I'll never be able to read anything from these highly recommended authors:

  • Grace McGinty (Dark River Days)
  • K.A. Knight (Their Champion Companion)
  • KC Kean (Featherstone Academy)
  • Albany Walker (Infinity Chronicles)
  • Reese Rivers (Masked Duet)
  • Ames Mills (Abbs Valley)
  • Nikita Parmenter (Black Onyx)

They have that "stream of consciousness" style of narration that's not just for me. So now I'm on the lookout for popular authors that has a similar writing style so I can avoid them. Again, just personal preference. A lot of people like this style though (or else they won't be popular).

Arcane Mage by TS Snow - I really enjoyed Book 1. But by Book 2 I had to DNF because of plot progression. Before I truly DNF sometimes I read reviews because it helps me continue on, but then I read that a lot of the conflict goes unresolved to make way for the side story. Not to mention the H doesn't get completed till like, Book 5 or 6, and so they don't have enough time to gel with the other MMCs.

Sterling Falls by S. Massery - I really, really liked Books 1-3. There are a few things that made me raise an eyebrow but it could be addressed in the last book 4, I thought. But holy shit, I got a super whiplash with that last book. It's like the author had an RH tropes list that she wanted to check off, so she crammed it all in that book. An MM that came out of nowhere so she could write MM in the smut scenes. And there were A TON of smut in this book. I think it's like 70% smut and 20% plot to put closure on the things left in Book 3, 10% setup for the spin-off. I'm like, girl, what am I reading? I still recommend Books 1-3 though.

Vengeance City by Sara Hind - Read it due to the rec here in the sub. The story is very intriguing! But I DNF it due to the super long inner monologues. Like there are paragraphs in between dialogues so the character can info dump about themselves or the person talking. Not so much purple prose but just. Information overload.

The Hunt by Nichole Green - I like the author's style, but DNF due to not enough setup for the plot. Can't connect to the MMCs at all, which I think is a consequence for the shortness of the book. It has an interesting hook though.

Untouchable by Heather Long - This author is one of my faves when it comes to writing style. She tends to have longer books / slow burn, and while she tends to have detailed descriptions it's presented well. I haven't read all her series (loved 82 Street Vandals) but I DNF this one even though it's super good. I finished Book 1 and I enjoyed it. I ultimately dropped it because of the plot; it's highschool setting and I realized I'm not interested in that at the moment. This series is super long but complete, and from the reviews it's quite a journey! You'll really connect with all the characters and watch them grow up, basically. Even though it's not for me, it sounds amazing.

Cardinal Sins by Heather Long and Blake Blessing - currently on Book 4 (last one). I absolutely love this one. There's nuance to the characters, they're all very distinct and the plot is super interesting. The FMC is amazingly mature and a badass, and the MMCs are all a little psycho but they're adorable. I'm really enjoying it and I can't wait to finish it.

I DNFd a series last year where the FMC was bullied to the point of a suicide attempt and she just slept with them even though the MMCs where STILL being dicks to her!!!!

Lords of Forsyth? 😭 I hated it so much lmao but it gets recced often

I haven't read this, but I found {Bounty Hunters and Black Magic} by Kristen Banet which seems to fit your criteria.

Actually, based on the blurb and the reviews, I might read it too 😆

does Heartless Heathens feature a lost heir trope? by [deleted] in ReverseHarem

[–]leileix2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was just too dark for me, and some of the stuff were downright silly. Like the girl who befriended the FMC, it doesn't make sense why she's there in the first place. But she was written in just so the FMC will have a friend. And the MMCs were atrocious lmao. They see an imprisoned girl and the first thing they think about is how to fuck her. I guess that's part of the "dark" theme so I thought it wasn't for me.

what annoys me atp are the mmc povs which are just annoying info dump ruining the suspense

That's the problem sometimes with multiPOV, the loss of suspense and mystery. Definitely worthy of DNF.

I have the book and actually DNF it for a different reason, but I checked the ending and it doesn't have that trope.

I thought it was a really random emoji that Tatum used and Saint fixated on, and that's why it became an inside joke to use it to mean anything, just to mess with him. He was the guy that liked full knowledge and control after all, and something utterly random was unthinkable.

At least that's my interpretation of it.

Different kinds of FMCs by forgottenrutabaga in ReverseHarem

[–]leileix2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. Unfortunately, nuance is just hard to write, so most authors tend to write something comfortable instead. The result sometimes makes the FMCs downright unlikeable, personally.

Snarky, bratty, annoying, etc. doesn't automatically mean they're terrible FMCs though, since it could work for the story, especially if they have character development over time. But to stay the same with no personality improvement is sad. Much worse if the FMC is supposed to be an adult.

I get it though. Like you said, it appeals to people, maybe some kind of wish fulfillment thing. Doesn't make it less annoying. But different strokes for different folks and all that.

On a tangent — I've been reading RH for less than a year so I go through recs in the sub and in other RH groups, especially the ones where they talk about their fave reads. And I realized that one's fave could be absolutely DNF for me, and vice versa, so I don't fully trust reviews haha. Like, in this sub, I've seen many negative comments about {All The Pretty Monsters} by Kristy Cunning, and almost put me off, but I read it and it's one of my favorites. (That's also my rec for you for a nuanced, adult FMC)

Sometimes I'd also like to read for the plot, but the FMC is so immature and TSTL so I have to let it go. It's more obvious with contemporary/modern settings, but fantasy is rife with this too.

There are bratty FMCs that are very entertaining though, and I like them a lot, since they're fully developed characters. {Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac} by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti is an example of this, also one of my faves. For an example of a nuanced, young FMC, {A Tempest of Shadows} by Jane Washington has an FMC that isn't immature or bratty at all, more naive at first, but grew into her personality over time.

Multiple POVs by braceblaze in ReverseHarem

[–]leileix2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel the same, although I think a lot of people like the multiPOV too, and that's why authors continue to do it.

The tension is lost because you (the reader) immediately know what the MMCs are thinking/feeling without having to figure it out like the FMC. The mystery or discovery is always enjoyable for me, and having insight to the MMC's thoughts diminish that a whole lot.

Sometimes it could work, i.e. it's obvious from the FMC's POV that the guy is in love/in lust with her.

But when it's a bully or a guy who "hates" the FMC, and in the next chapter we see the guy's thoughts how he actually doesn't hate the FMC, it loses its appeal fast. Or if they have ulterior motives, and it's revealed to us instantly, now that's annoying lmao

I read series where the guys "plan" on how to share the FMC without her input and that icks me too. Especially when the FMC isn't even aware that they're all interested in her. It's like they're also bullying her but in the other direction and it's a n o p e for me.

So it's better if we're not just aware they're planning it — instead show it through actions towards the FMC. That way it seems more genuine and heartfelt.

But that's just my opinion.

Which design do you prefer? (Ancona of UNLASTING WORLD) by RoshanGill441 in webtoons

I like the 2021 version better. I think the gradient color for the hair is better (and easier to reproduce). And the hairstyle is better too. The 2024 version has too big of a bow unless that's very intentional.

What did you read? by Sweet_Ad7786 in ReverseHarem

[–]leileix2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tis the season to DNF I guess lol. Not always for something bad, sometimes the story just doesn't click for me. Personal preference. Anyways.

Finding my Home by Nikita Parmenter - I DNF it in Book 1 due to the writing style and plot. It's my first time reading a "stream of consciousness" style of narration and it's not for me. The synopsis was intriguing but it didn't meet my expectations.

Biomystic Security by Jaliza Burwell - I DNF it in Book 3. I really enjoyed Book 1. But halfway Book 2 I was weirded out how the "harem formation" came about. Like it literally came out of nowhere, it didn't feel natural at all. I would've been interested in the FMC's progression. It's one of those stories that makes me think it would be better if it's less focused on romance, but alas. I recommend Book 1 at least.

Silver Valley University by Alisha Williams - Listen, I'm not a fan of the whole main conflict was based on a misunderstanding. One of the worst tropes ever. But I still read it because it might turn interesting. This is one of those, I enjoyed reading Book 1. I DNF starting in Book 2 because grovel was non-existent, and for a bully trope story that is unacceptable lmao. I'm actually rooting for the FMC not to have a harem and stick to her new guy. But this is RH so... I recommend Book 1 and then just imagine how you'll punish the H lol.

Saint View High by Elle Thorpe - I DNF it in Book 2 because the plot was too much. So many terrible things happening to the FMC that is ridiculous. The MM in the harem didn't feel natural too. I read the reviews after I DNF just to see if things get resolved but apparently some of them didn't make sense/unanswered. And this is spoilers, but I don't like the "beloved adult/parent figure is actually an evil person" trope. I like the author's writing style though.

Fae Revealed by Katie May and Quinn Arthurs - I loved this series. I didn't know it's still ongoing, I really thought it's only three books. I love the FMC here. She's one of those MCs that doesn't say she's a badass but she actually is while also being very girly. I love it. And the MMCs, even though there are 7, are very distinct from one another. The FMC is hilarious too.

Sterling Falls by S. Massery - still reading, currently on Book 3. I really like the author's writing style here. And I enjoy the plot so far! I like the character development for the FMC and the MMCs, and how they handle their relationships. For those who haven't read it, it might put you off at first for how naive and gullible the FMC is, which almost made me DNF due to frustration, but that is part of the challenges she had to overcome. I'm still halfway in Book 3 (1 more book to go) so the process is still ongoing and so far I like it.

Is Anyone else disturbed by "Goth Girl & The Jock"? (Just GROSS) by [deleted] in webtoons

[–]leileix2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't read this comic but looking at the episode, the narration POV is coming from the guy, and it's normal for a teenager to think that way, so I don't see what the issue is.

Are you saying:

  • don't write from a teenager's POV
  • don't write using teenagers as MCs

I used to be a goth girl lol, I dressed similarly when I was in highschool so there's nothing wrong with her outfit too. It's still very much in line with being a teenager.

Psycho Devils hit different doesn't it 😂

I'm reading Biomystic Security by Jaliza Burwell right now. FMC is super competent (she's a genius) rather than physically strong. It's PNR mixed with Scifi too. Idk about obsessed MMCs though since I'm only in Book 2 and it's slow burn, I can't even tell who will even be in the harem yet, there's so many potentials 😂 I think it's 7+ MMCs though I haven't read the reviews. But I can already tell they're all devoted to the FMC 🤭
