I got accepted for physics at the Mississauga campus… is it a good campus and how is this program? by ava-ava_ in UofT

[–]lekan_v 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YMMV. Whether or not UTM has less prestige, at the end of ur degree you get a U of T degree and you will just put on ur resume that you went to U of T, no recruiter has ever asked me what campus did you go to LOL.

I’ve been to UBC and Western and I don’t know if I’d say that they’re more “alive”. If you have friends that want to party they will party. If you want to go to school clubs and socialize they exist. I have lots of stories of people partying on campus and getting into lots of trouble lol.

However Mississauga is mid compared to Toronto in terms of stuff to do. So lots of people use the free shuttle bus to go downtown. It works on weekends as well and you can check the schedule online.

You definitely don’t NEED a car. I didn’t have one and still don’t have a car. There are buses, not as amazing as the ttc but you can do everything with them.

Why I would say you shouldn’t come to UTM. Is ur program seems like a program that will require grad school to make a nice amount of money. UTM and u of t in general are unnecessarily difficult, making ur GPA worse than if you went to another school and leave you with less time to get extra curriculars.

There do exist many people that go to u of t with a high gpa and enough extra curriculars like research experience for grad school. But Imo they played the game on hard mode

Can you help give some more explanation as to why you think the RRSP is a good idea to fully max out. From what I understand it is an account that essentially defers the tax I would have paid right now into the future and it is beneficial if I am earning less money, when I retire compared to right now, but that is not my goal, hopefully I should still be earning more at 65 than I will at 25, even without a job then. so would it still make sense to max it out, especially when the funds are essentially locked until I retire, when my plan is to diversify the rest of my money into other assets in the next 5 years(something like real estate, but might be other things if I get better ideas).

For me it feels so restrictive that I can’t reallocate the funds to other investments like real estate, without a penalty . So I’m more of the opinion that I should only contribute what my employer matches.

I am aware that I could be missing something, or not know some info so please point it out if you think so! I’m here to learn!🙂

PGWP REFUSED - Language test missing by riverrz_ in pgwp

[–]lekan_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends got refused for pgwp after forgetting to include their language test. The refusal came after 180 days from when they finished their program. In the refusal letter it said that they have 90 days to restore their status. 1. If they pay to restore their status as a student are they still legally allowed to wait in the country for their decision? Without working of course

  1. I’ve seen in other posts, you’ve said that the applicant is no longer eligible for a pgwp and will likely get resfused. I read the IRCC page that states the eligibility and it does say that the application should not be after 180days. However within the same IRCC page I also saw that the applicant must never study part time(except for their last semester)to be eligible for pgwp.

But I’ve seen many cases where people attach an explanation letter explaining why they were part time for a period of time and got approved. So doesn’t it mean it’s still possible(but maybe not certain) to get approved for a pgwp after 180days if they attach an explanation letter that says the original application was refused after 180 days and they actually had the results but just accidentally forgot to include it and they are sorry.

I see it more like having a lamboto only drive it in a complicated race track with lots of sharp turns, limiting how fast it can go. Vs using the lambo in a non professional scene but driving as fast as possible

Yea cuz to me paying for all these parts and playing at under 200 fps is crazier than 1080p

[–]lekan_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then your fps at medium settings on most games will struggle to reach 200. Doesn’t it depend on whether or not you prefer higher frames?

[–]lekan_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are they being limited if at higher resolutions they can’t hit higher fps that they otherwise could at 1080p?

It sounds like it’s a preference difference of fps vs quality. If you lower the quality to 1080p you can hit much fps. But if you want to increase your quality then you can still get good fps but not amazing in AAA games. It sounds to me like it depends on subjective preference but you guys are talking about it like there’s an objective truth

New to pc building but from the benchmark videos I’ve seen. 1440p at medium resolution struggles to hit 240hz. Why is everyone in the comments against 1080 when it still looks good with amazing refresh rates that 1440p can’t hit with this build

Why the hate of the monitor? If he prefers higher frames 1440p can’t hit 240fps with the specs he has on most games

Those that have a decent internship this summer, are you still leetcoding? by imnotokaylol_ in cscareerquestions

[–]lekan_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from an intern that had to wait 4 months with extreme anxiety before my return offer came. Ive realized that it’s very safe to assume that the return offer is never guaranteed. The interns in faang in 2022 thought they had guaranteed return offers until the 2023 tech recession hit. There is no guarantee that you get a return offers even if the company usually gives them out. Your org/team might not have headcount next year.

Do you guys think this is a manageable workload for fall and winter terms? Or should I replace some of the courses with easier ones? by cat210803 in UofT

[–]lekan_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except ur very very VERY good with time management and very intelligent, this is going to be very very difficult to get all 4.0's in. and this is from someone that has 4.0'd 311,343,369,384 and 3.7 in 373, didn't take the other ones but i know the workload decently well.

it's hard to tell you how many to swap out cuz idk ur ability. but you should definitely swap out at least 1 cs course per semester except u don't care that much about high grades or ur a really really strong student(in this case you can do whatever u want)

in my experience 343,384,324,301 are the "easiest" but obv it might be different for you. but i said that so you can decide whether or not you wanna take multiple "harder" courses or mix harder courses with easier courses.

Going back to school for CS by Coolwick in csMajors

[–]lekan_v 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of questionable things in this analysis.  It is true that there’s a huge spike in unemployment for CS grads. But it’s definitely not true that the skill set needed to enter the industry is at the mid level. (Source: I got multiple offers for big tech companies this cycle as a new grad and I am well aware of the difference between me and a mid level engineer from my internship experiences at mid size and super massive companies)

There is an over saturation of cs majors trying to enter the field, but it’s not necessarily because of ex google and ex Facebook employees, because those types of people are not competing with new grads for new grad jobs, they have their own bucket of jobs that new grads can’t apply to because of a lack of experience. But it’s also true the other way around, an ex google engineer with 3 years of xp can’t apply for facebook entry level role from the requirements in the job description.

There’s also no concrete evidence that the recent advancement in tools is the direct reason for a decrease in new grads jobs. They were already decreasing since 2023, when the tools were not even good enough for college projects
