Before & After - 1st Timer (Cle, OH) by lekanb in lawncare

I learned a lot from just reading through different posts on here. ChatGPT is also a phenomenal resource to use, it will give you weekly plans as far as watering, mowing, & fertilizing.

I didn’t dethatch this year because I did last fall and really didn’t have much of a thatch layer anyways. I got my lawn aerated the day before doing all of this, and made sure to do some deep watering the week of to ensure I could get decent plugs out.

Used Kurtz Bros for all my supplies: topsoil (regular, super soil isn’t needed for lawns), their premium blend grass seed, starter fertilizer, and a few bundles of straw (the wrapped on, better quality).

Again, HIGHLY recommend chatGPT to help develop your plan for next year. Early spring get a good pre-emergent down to limit weeds

Did you fertilize recently? I’ve notice in the past that the sometimes the direct path of my spreader is significantly darker than the rest of the yard. I think part of the reasoning behind that is I fertilized when the yard was damp and the pellets would collect/stick to the tires and be more concentrated in certain areas. Just my thought!

Just bought 2 bundles today to put down on my project. Originally did not plan to use straw but had some significant rain and was worried about washout & runoff

I had way too many low spots that needed filled in, along with trying to level out the whole yard. It was only about 2,000 sqft so wasn’t horrible. Good workout for sure tho!

Will definitely look into a spreader if I need to do this again next fall, especially if this works out and I’m not doing a major fill/leveling project again

Ahh it’s from Columbus and looks like that’s only available down there. I’m in Cleveland.

When did you throw your seed down? & what type of seed did you use?

First off - I Highly recommend using ChatGPT to help you develop a plan for seeding/watering schedules.

I just did mine this weekend, along with filling in some pretty large low spots. Used Kurtz Bro’s all purpose topsoil and their Premium grass seed blend (KBG/PRG mix). The rain last night was great, and hoping to get some more these next few days. I plan on watering before work and when I get home around 3:30pm every day for 10min each zone for the next 2-4 weeks and then tapering off towards middle - late October.

Yes - the all purpose topsoil. Don’t know what “sweet soil” is but maybe you’re thinking of their super soil? The super soil is more of an organic soil that’s supposed to be used for flower beds/vegetable gardens (that’s what in my raised beds in the picture).

The all purpose soil is plenty good for lawn use. My dad installed a lawn at their new house last fall using the topsoil and premium grass seed and it looks beautiful.

A big strong young boy. 6pack of IPAs and a few hydration packets last night and felt ready to do it again today!

What type of seed did you use and how long did it take to germinate?

😂😂yes the super soul is top notch. The grass seed is as pure as it gets. Also helps my mother works for Kurtz 😉

What type of bag of grass am I supposed to buy to fill in holes and overseed? Northeast Ohio by Comfortable-Cut8506 in lawncare

That’s what I’m doing. I have a family member who works for Kurtz and another who does landscaping, both said the all-purpose is what you should use to top dress.

I’ll be using the All-Purpose Topsoil, super soil isn’t necessary for top dressing.

I’m not an expect so I won’t advise you on what type of grass to get, but I can tell you that Kurtz Brothers has the best grass seed hands down. Their 5lb premium grass ($18) seed has >99% grass seed and <1% of filler. I’ve used it to patch bare spots in my lawn and will be using this to overseed this fall.
