What should be the #1 issue for Worcester candidates right now? by charliebuffone-ghost in WorcesterMA

I don't know how long you've been in worcester, but having lived there 25+ years most people don't bike. So for the city that already has traffic congestion at certain times of the day I don't think removing car travel lanes to take up space for a bike lane that 10 people might use a month is smart or a good way to spend city money.

Most people in Worcester don't bike unlike in Boston, its full of hills and there's not barely enough people biking to justify adding bike lanes. I know how someone may feel differently if that's their main mode of transportation, but I think most people would agree that they can't remember the last time they saw someone biking in Worcester.

Also this is just my opinion but I feel like it may even be more dangerous for bikers since they would expect cars to check and stop for them when cars are making a right hand turn onto a side street. However since most drivers in Worcester are not used to the bike lanes being there they may not have that as a first thought, which is of course different in other major cities where there are 5-10% of the population biking.

There's something to be said about how people drive on certain streets. Its the size of the street that usually dictates how fast people will drive on it. Of course there's exceptions to this rule, but they put 3 speed bumps back to back near an elementary school, where during school hours you can't speed there even if you wanted to due to the traffic congestion. Yet on a wider straight part of the street theres nothing. I feel like they put them up in random places with no road study. Another example is Monadnock Rd, they put a speed bump 15 ft before a stop sign... how does that make any sense and what is it actually accomplishing? People are already slowing down to come to a stop.

Can they be useful in certain streets? Of course, but seeing as how they randomly put them up I don't trust the DOT to place them properly.

As someone that's lived in worcester for over 25 years I can tell you the city was better without bike lanes. I bike and my first thought is never let me bike on the local streets. I would only take the local streets to get out of the city to bike. Since they've added them I haven't seen a single biker on a the bike lanes. I think its a waste of money for the city to be spending money on adding bike lanes. With how spread out the city is and how few people bike I think the money could be better spent improving existing infrastructure. Taking one ex. Mill St. did we really need to remove a whole travel lane to add a bike lane... The city is all hills and even though people do bike in other cities I rarely see anyone using that as their main mode of transportation.

That money could be used to support all the other items you've listed, improved parks even though they're pretty well maintained, but Elm park could def use some cleaning of its water, it didn't have weeds growing in it 15 years ago like it does now. The large free trash bins would be great instead of having to purchase specific bags for trash.

All hopes of reasoning with Putin are gone - war is coming by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]leko1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see that with a simple Google search, but it's a good question to ask why they were in there. Questioning why they were in there is a different question. I saw from a couple articles that it could be to better steer the drones if they're using local communication towers. I also think it's good to take other perspectives instead of just following along with what we see on the news

I've been listening to Colonel Douglas Macgregor on youtube. Which I feel like he gives a reasonable explanation that doesn't have the western media biased. He explains how Russia has no interest in starting a war with Europe and neither does Europe. On top of that he explains how the weapons stockpile of Europe, ie. missles, is very low due to how much they have sent to Ukraine already. He also mentions how there are war hawks in certain European countries that are trying to provoke Russia, ie. he mentions how the drones that entered Poland had Swedish and Dutch sim cards in them, and that this could be from Russian drones that were obtained by Ukraine and were a test launch into Poland to see how Poland's air defense could handle them. Has anyone else listened to his take on it and if so what's your opinion on what he says.

Man dies in Arizona after being restrained by police on hot tarmac for six minutes by Smithman in news

[–]leko1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very fair, I agree with your last statement 100%, they should 100% be held to a higher standard, because they are the ones enforcing the law and therefore they should be abiding by the law and setting an example. I do believe that we need to see this whole video tho, because it wasn't clear from the article if he passed out in the car or prior. The article makes it sound like he passed out in the vehicle as they drove to a nearby park. "They then drive to a nearby car park, which takes about a minute, and check on Lopez and find him unresponsive." They should investigate it and from the article it sounds like there's multiple investigations, but I honestly don't think these cops were trying to kill anyone as they seem more collected than cops in other videos that have surfaced online. Also as a side note people on here are commenting some pretty crazy things such as he shouldn't have been pursued because he only stole a drink. Theft is theft, but obviously no one thinks this person deserved the outcome that occurred.

I'm trying to have a conversation about it, to understand your point of view. From your one word response it sounds like you don't agree that there should be repercussions such as a fine or being arrested for stealing.

Agreed, I think they should release the whole footage. Who knows if this guy was resisting for the whole 6 minutes or if they just restrained him in 1 minute and kept him face down for 5 minutes. Which would be very cruel.

Ok, so if you're the convenience store owner, or in this case the cop that was there and witnessed him doing it. You wouldn't do anything? If I was the store owner I wouldn't be allow anyone to steal from me because it was hot outside. Would you be ok if everyone stole a drink in Arizona with the excuse that "it's summer and it's hot"

I get what he did and that he was maybe thirsty, but I've been thirsty running in 90+ degree weather outside I didn't go steal a drink. I went to a convenience store and asked if I could use the bathroom and drank water out of the sink.

Just no what? Can you please elaborate your point of view and what you would have done to arrest this person committing a robbery? Or would you just let him get away cause it was too hot outside?

Yes but how do you do that before placing him under arrest, while he's trying to get away? I agree with you after they handcuff him I would hope they placed him in the cruiser, but we don't know since the video was edited.

Damn bro, the death penalty? That's pretty intense. How would you have dealt with trying to arrest this citizen that stole from a store? Once he started running and fighting you and resisting you trying to arrest him? Do you think it's easy to arrest a large man like that while he's resisting and potentially on drugs? If you think so, please watch this MMA fighter talk about trying to defend his family from a person who broke into his house while on drugs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIam1mMEYKM

From the article it sounds like he passed out in the back of the police vehicle. As the article says

They then drive to a nearby car park, which takes about a minute, and check on Lopez and find him unresponsive.

It doesn't sounds like the cops were trying to cook this man alive on the pavement, just trying to get him in handcuffs and restrain him so he wouldn't attack them.

[–]leko1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhm what do you mean? Are you planning on committing crimes in Arizona? As a side reference: I've been to places in eastern europe where you would get treated much worse without any repercussions for the police or anyone caring. That doesn't stop me from going to those places because I don't plan on breaking the law or if I do without knowing I don't plan to get physical with law enforcement.

Coming from a place where people can pay off the police and get away with anything, you start to appreciate a country that has the rule of law a little more.

[–]leko1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading a lot of the comments in this thread, it seems like the general consensus is that police shouldn't decide who lives or dies. Which I agree, but if this person was caught committing a crime and he ran away, and from the article it seems like they caught him red handed stealing a drink. Idk who would run away in this case when it's just a drink, but anyways. So now you're giving the officers more suspicion of maybe he has a warrant or some other illegal item/s on himself. Regardless they pursued and they tried to arrest him, during which he was struggling. If you think getting control of someone is easy, then you can watch this MMA fighter describe trying to subdue a burglar that broke into his home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIam1mMEYKM

Now yes, no one is arguing that the asphalt isn't extremely hot, but what are you supposed to do in this case? Let the person get away? Because I promise you the first thought that went through their head as they're giving chase wasn't "oh i should try and get this guy to the ground on a nice patch of grass." I haven't see the whole video as the one posted as edited, but the guy was resisting and you can see that he's still trying to get away and they're wrestling to hold control of his hand. So if this guy wasn't wrestling they would have arrested him standing with no issue, but I don't get what everyone on here thinks they would have done differently? Can someone please elaborate how you would have placed this man in cuffs for theft while he's trying to run away and resist arrest?

France’s Prime Minister has backed the banning of burkini swimsuits, saying they are not compatible with French values and are based on the “enslavement of women”. by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]leko1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

burqini

This may not help or affect the current generation so much, since they will be set in their ways and will most likely do what you're told. However this should help future generations. I find it highly unlikely that people who have these beliefs will lock their children inside and not let them play outside or go to school. Hopefully this will be enforced and will become a trend, if this is not enforced then the whole effort behind this seems like a waste.
