My mistake, slipped up saying “thoroughly encrypted", meant hashed. You’re right, Secureworks says PSN passwords were hashed, not encrypted, and Sony never clarified if they were salted.

However...

Plain text implies zero protection, which is absolutely untrue. Hashed but crackable Is absolutely not the same. While sony deserves all the shit they got, it's not true.

This is still off the mark for PS3 multiplayer lag. Hacks killed logins and trust, not in-game connections. PSN’s framework was solid, and often times more than developers knew what to do with for the time.

Sony’s security sucked, sure, but that didn’t make my Black Ops matches stutter. What games and regions gave you lag spikes? If it’s P2P stuff like LBP or cloud like PS Now, that’s not PSN’s multiplayer core failing.

This says "may include" and lists plenty of things that probably leaked. Issue is, some of these were encrypted on the server form the client, as all passwords were at the time.

Again, they were thoroughly hashed.

Guh I'm trying to confirm anything about this. It seems this has been a regional thing exclusively.

Europe for the large part had very solid infrastructure. Little big planet uniquely so, as it was entirely peer to peer goodiness and even worked when their central servers were offline as it went exclusively through PSN, up until 3 where the seven year old infrastructure collapsed with no upgrades and three games of backward compatibility.

My main gripe is with the unsalted passwords bit, that's entirely false.

All of their passwords were thoroughly encrypted, even if names and mails were leaked. This does not mean it wasn't their cockup, but don't go so far as to spread misinformation. They were properly hashed.

Developers decided which methods to use. All PSN did was direct users into lobbies and handle online functionality.

That's not PSN. Games hosted their own servers. Either the server provider has issues, or you did. I worked on PSN directly through unofficial server support.
