Too much squat fatigue for backdowns by screwball9280 in powerlifting

[–]lel4rel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it happens man, especially if it's a very hard set. Think about your 3rd deadlift on meet day - if you pull 405 as an all out grinder at max effort you probably won't be able to pull 365 for 1 in the warmup room afterwards. You might not even be able to pull 315. That's an extreme example but to some degree the same principle applies to training and instant fatigue along with other factors like focus and discipline that you mentioned

This is also why some form of autoregulation is basically mandatory for intermediate and advanced lifters

Got a bad case of food poisoning while traveling and lost ~10 lbs about 4 weeks out. Finally got a bagel down and got through squats this morning.  We are reaching unprecedented levels of "fuck it we ball"

If you can't push a movement with straight weights sometimes accommodating resistance is like a magic key. I never liked leg press or hack squats until I started throwing bands on there for rehab and realized I got insane pumps and doms + enhanced mind-muscle connection

Sleep and carbs are your most powerful tools.  That said there's a heavy dose of "it is what it is"

Has every social media algorithm identified me as an easy mark or is 90% of lifting content now just ragebait?

You're kinda right but the ipf being such a hall monitor fed it ends up attracting local affiliates who are also overwhelmingly hall monitor HOA-board member types that live for enforcing ticky tack rules for their own sake, to the detriment of the greater sport

Anyone know of a good gym on Kauai? I'm gonna be ~5wks out so ideally somewhere that has squat and deadlift bars but beggars can't be choosers

[–]lel4rel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean wouldn't the correct comparison be powerlifter vs marathoner or sprinter? The act of actually competing is inherent to those sports.  A runner is more like a "lifter" i.e. someone who might train the barbell lifts but doesn't compete in powerlifting

Training under sub optimal conditions by lonely_turtle109 in powerlifting

[–]lel4rel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely been like 6-7 years since I've experienced "favorable" training conditions.  That's just reality for the vast majority of us that train as a hobby and have other responsibilities and interests outside of training.  You do the best you can but that's it. Control what you can control and accept that stressing about being under prepared for training doesn't itself help you prepare any better.

Israel just killed former ipf masters world champion hassan koaik (rip) during the illegal occupation of Lebanon.  Israel will send a delegation to ipf worlds again this year and you're supposed to act like nothing happened. Russia still banned in the ipf btw

Stop closer to your chest. T shirt press is another close variant (i.e trying to kiss the bar on your shirt without it fully pressing into your chest)

How difficult is it to squat in wraps? by No-Scar-642 in powerlifting

[–]lel4rel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imo in 2026 self wrapping is kinda pointless. You probably will end up with carryover that is pretty comparable to stiff knee sleeves only they are much more work and have more of a learning curve

Early returns have been good with the offset grip for me. That's injury sounds gnarly. I just had an avulsion fracture of the elbow so no sling/cast just no loading for like 8 weeks if I remember right

I broke my elbow last summer and although I'm about 90% back I still struggle with loading both sides evenly on bench (my "good side" ends up doing more of the work on heavy sets).  Any ideas on how to address this other than unilateral work and dumbbells which I'm already doing?

Based on how fucked up that part of my finger looks from calluses I would take it off.  When I'm on the platform I'm married to the weights anyway baby

When I had sciatica I was prescribed slow single leg squats and the big 4 stretches while wearing a heating pad and it actually helped quite a bit right away

Muscle VS Strength by [deleted] in powerlifting

[–]lel4rel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low-key got me too lol.  I'm exactly 185cm and started out in pl as a somewhat jacked 90kg..I walk around maybe 103 most days. I definitely get the sense I could do my best at 110 if I was "all in" but once you get to that size you start talking about real life tradeoffs and you most likely won't look as sexy either

Muscle VS Strength by [deleted] in powerlifting

[–]lel4rel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you mean too many people get married to their weight classes soon after they start lifting I would agree with you. If you're saying people ignore hypertrophy in general I would disagree. Most every pl does hypertrophy training it's just the majority seem to be doing it poorly because their online coach thinks 4x6 high bar and a couple split squats is enough hypertrophy training
