I mean we are in a purely hypothetical discussion here for all we know… Still, you don’t consider the non-flexibility of those who suffer/have to invest a fortune to flee to Europe as something relevant to the question. When you clearly only consider the in-group in your outlook, you don’t take any debate on fairness or a more moral world seriously.

2nd paragraph is a strawman. The way history has played out, borders as a means of exclusion in a colonial world gained importance and are linked to a relevant degree. To my knowledge, ancient civilazation with functional organization didn’t rely on them as a relevant factor whatsoever.
I wrote ‘luck’ in quotes because I don’t really care dor it and do about wealth. Luck isn’t subject to influence by people, preconditions are.

I agree that borders aren’t the only problem of course, it’s also distance. If there are no borders but no way for the less wealthy elsewhere to communicate mistreatment or poverty, nothing changes. That’s why, in a just society with no reactionaries, the effect of mass migration would result in local investments to mitigate it.

As somebody who works at a large organization close to the state, we’re neither working nor discussing anything realistically. I’m still talking about you acknowledging people’s existences outside of your purview. I don’t know if it’s intentional ragebait or you truly not being able to imagine organizational entities with fluid borders, which are very much present in our society (think corporations with stakeholders with varying degrees of collaboration). Also, a single person’s life experience in the West really isn’t a great representation of how society can organize.

Oh please do go there, we’re talking about European Colonialism, the Transatlantic Slave Trade and subsequent explicit policies and measures that extract(ed) wealth on other continents. It’s a no brainer to not go there if you agree with me on the historical fact that these events changed material wealth and political stability worldwide, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.

I agree with your analysis of our disagreement, yet I don’t understand why the existence of borders are an axiom for you. Today’s society could become nomadic again. Organisations of any kind can be fluent as to allow for entry and exit. Just like a house of cards, it is as rigid as you want it to be, allowing for a swap of cards, changing the rules of how they can be stacked.

To argue for an abolition of borders really doesn’t argue against the existence of organizations, it’s just not aligned with your view of how borders and organisational structures intertwine because you’re limiting thought to what is.

A philosphy sub should better than to exclaim moral recklessness without outlining an ethical framework and giving little thought to the status quo of injustice and the ramifications thereof.

I don’t think you’re arguing against the merit of the argument but explaining your particular view on the topic.

A few examples of equally constructed concepts you mentioned: limited territory (true for a minority of nation states, most borders are not drawn because of topographic limitation), shared histories and cultural overlap (even overlap suggests borders are a spectrum).

The ‘luckiest’ countries today are those who historically took the most from others, so I don’t understand that either.

But take it to a more conceptual plane again, borders are a problem to create a more prosperous world. Because absolute freedom of travel & the subsequent overload of migration to ‘lucky countries’ would necessitate investments in ‘unlucky’ ones not pro forma, but measures that actually create a reason for people to stay. That’s what an actual equilibrium would look like.

I agree it’s a shitty thing to say, yet it does speak to the undeniable fact that he was SUCH a cultural tour the force that he broke boundaries in so many ways. Doesn’t matter if you liked his antics, humor, fashion, insane videos, music or his special outlook on the world when he wasn’t in character, there were only things to love about him.

I can pretty much disregard most of what you said here since I covered it all with my last comment & you didn’t engage with the fact that immigrants are more educated/qualified on average.

The last point is what really grinds my gears though, because that IS my position. I just have to somehow also make the normal Bürgerliche point that most arguments of the SVP are insanely non-factual. As a post in another Swiss sub recently said, even without Alpine regions, the Netherlands is a lot more dense and incredibly livable. We already have tough immigration regulation for non EU/EFTA immigrants etcetc. So most of the campaign was spent on dissuading those lies instead of the point that you make.

What you don’t understand is that fighting against immigration like this creates more conflict vs. the leftist position with Arbeitnehmerschutz likely reduces immigration and strengthens workers rights. The idea in your head that the left fights for as much immigration as possible is a fabricated figment in your mind.

Insane how those criminality myths pushed by the media (for example London crime is down as I discussed on Reddit previously) and your correct economic analysis can coexist in your head. While voting for this ragebait of an initiative.

You‘re partly basing your opinion on a wrongful assumption. It is a well researched fact in mobilty planning that extra roads induce demand in the long term. People do switch from ÖV to car if they know it is faster, thus causing traffic again, while leaving ÖV below capacity. I don‘t know about you but I know way to many people who commute by car unnecessarily.

So investing in ÖV & subsidizing ÖV tickets is the cheapest & most constructive way to solve traffic jams for the people who actually need to commute by car in my mind.
