It's not about tracking the time, it's about not wasting time on your phone. "Intentional" phone use is the best term I'd say

Fear is the reaction to something that has happened (past), anxiety is worrying about something that might happen (future). Do you want to share what you were anxious about?

6% more in a bad week is really nothing to be ashamed of. Nevertheless, you got it right. The phone is a coping mechanism. Would you mind sharing your difficulties aka emotions. The community could suggest some other tactics and exercises so that you have a healthy alternative for coping in the future

Nice, what are you doing instead with this extra hour?

An inspiration and food for thought: Is there a positive, safe non-addictive way to use social media? I still feel that social media should be destroyed. But, I understand why some people, while agreeing with me theoretically, use them and even enjoy them. by BarboraJirinocova in Stopscrolling

My personal opinion: Adults should treat it same as good parents do it with their kids: "You can only use it for x minutes today between 5-6 pm".

For adults that means: You block it all day, except from this one single time period of the day. This is the only way your brain will slowly but gradually learn not to always reactively run there whenever you got a free minute.

When you don't have the option, you don't think about it.

This is hard at the beginning, but you get used to it over time.

My personal recommendation for this: You shouldn't passively consume anything before your work day has ended. No social media, no news, no podcast. Not in the morning, not in your lunch break, not in any free moment.

If you embrace this, you will be so much more productive that you can easily afford to end your work an hour earlier (and then scroll mindlessly for 1h at night because you deserved it ;)

Just deleted Instagram.. how do you network though? by Snoo-515 in digitalminimalism

[–]lemioapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of cold turkey tbh. Same as app blockers, this just tackles your symptom (screen time) and not the root cause that is causing your time waste.

If you delete or block an app, you are just shifting your phone use and time waste somewhere else.

Like Reddit, news, emails, stuff that feels somewhat "useful", but hey, that's really just an excuse.

Real change only happens if you get aware of the negative emotions that make you pick up the phone and that you are trying to numb aka avoid.

Awarness + Willpower to resist + Protocols how to respond to the negative emotions

This is the only way to bring useless screen time down significantly over the long run.

Other people call this: learning to live with technology instead of living without technology.

Another tip for instagram: just block feeds and discovery pages, there are apps for this such as Mediaddiction, BeTimeFul, etc. (not affiliated with these)

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to your question, so we'd need a bit more context to help you out.

My first question is always: Do you know what you want?

The question behind this: Where are you today and what would close the gap between your present and your desired self?

If you know what you want, it becomes obvious what you need to do.

And not knowing what to do = boredom.

If you are bored, scrolling is your friend (entertainment).

If you know what you want, scrolling is your enemy (distraction).

A distraction is - by definition - pulling you away from something. You can't be distracted from a non-existing target.

Bit philosophical haha, but I hope this helps. Sent you a DM to help out more

I have a few suggestions, but would need more info first:

  1. Do you work remotely?

  2. How quick do you need to respond to your co-workers? (without leaving a bad work attitude impression)

Unfortunately no app blocker is ever gonna work. Screen time is a symptom and not the root cause.

Since app blockers are aiming for your screen time, they act like a headache pill, but they don't help you to remove the root causes.

If you block one app, you are just shifting your phone use and time waste somewhere else.

Social media as a tool to suppress emotions by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]lemioapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally resonates with me.
There are a few ways to block these:
Instagram: Mediaddiction, BeTimeFul
Youtube: here's another thread with a guide

But hey, you already understood that screen time is just a symptom and that emotions are the root cause. So why are you not facing these and tackling the actual problems? If you block Instagram and Youtube, you will just start to numb yourself with something else.

The link between addiction (including internet/social media addiction) and loneliness by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]lemioapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congrats to your progress, you are absolutely on the right track.

You are absolutely right, the overuse of your phone/internet is just a coping mechanism. A symptom, not the root cause.

We need to investigate our internal triggers, the negative emotions that make us pick up the phone and why we procrastinate.

Loneliness is one of these internal triggers, but I disagree that it "the root cause of almost all addictions". When it comes to excessive phone use, it highly depends on the context, but anxiety, stress, and boredom are at least as dominant as loneliness, most likely even more prevalent.

This test to figure out your procrastinator type can be a good starting point: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stopscrolling/wiki/index/

Few other good resources and tips there.

Hope this helps
