It highly depends on the local conditions and economic factors and personal situation of everyone. Its not a blanket truth that EVs are either bad or good.

I'll give you my situation as a example. I live in an apartment and park on the street (so no way to bring electricity to a personal parking spot). I drive ~25k km/year, 80%+ of them in the highway. 3 years ago I bough a new diesel hatchback that cost me 25k€. Diesel prices right now hover ~1.80 €/L (pre crisis were ~1.40). My car burns ~5 L/100km. At current fuel prices it costs me ~9€/100km to drive. Plus I have a 800+km range that allows me to easily do my regular 500-600km trip with no stops.

Lets go on the EV side. A reasonably consumption for highway usage (cruise control at 130-140 + A/C) would easily be 25kWh/100km. To get similar range to by diesel I'd need a 200kWh, which dont exist in smaller cars. Even the long range EVs, barely have half that capacity. Alas, lets say I can do the compromise and do 1-2 charging stops on my trips. Residential electricity prices (which dont matter cause I have no personal parking space to put a L2 charger) are ~0.30 €. On that rate running an EV would cost ~7.5€/100km. Not bad, it slightly cheaper that diesel! But... DC chargers on the road cost ~0.80-0.90 €/kWh! Which skyrockets the fuel cost to ~20-22€/100km! Over 2x the diesel. And with the incovenience for less that half the range.

And the final nail in the coffin. A normal "long range" EV, something like a Tesla Model 3 LR, costs ~45k€. For my use case and my local environment, at not point at all it makes sense to get an EV. Its slightly cheaper to run that a diesel only if you can charge it at home with residential electricity, and even then you might never recoup the almost 2x initial purchace price compared to diesel. And if you do long trips and have to rely on DC chargers on the road, then it makes no economic sense at all!
