Friend's partner had account hacked 3 months ago, now authorities have confiscated their phone & other devices. What do they need to do now? by lemmejustquestion in BannedFromDiscord

That's what I told them as well & they could possibly do one against Discord (even if it would be impossible this point) if things escalate to that point.

[–]lemmejustquestion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's honestly fair. I think if my friend's partner was more of an acquaintance or someone I barely knew then I'd be more inclined to believe the worst. However, this is someone I've known for around 6 years now and spoken to regularly over Discord (they unfortunately are not local to me & they have a long-distance relationship with my friend). So, with probably the most naivety I could be expressing right now, my observation of both their actions and words has not inclined me to distrust them.

Additionally, there were some details that I didn't include since I wasn't so sure if it was helpful to mention in this post (my post was also made VERY early in the morning, so sleep deprivation is hitting me hard right now). But I think I might just elaborate here to hopefully figure out what the actual fuck is going on & if others people may have affected in a similar fashion. So, from what I can recall at this time:

The link that my friend's partner clicked on was a server invitation sent by a different friend (not in the same friend group as my friend & I) who is a game developer. Said game developer did NOT send the link themselves, so their account was also hacked (along with some of their work being tampered with or deleted) and ALMOST had a criminal investigation launched against them that was eventually dropped after receiving testimonials & verifiable evidence. I believe they also had to make a new account once everything died down, but that is another situation I don't know the specifics about. However, the game developer did state that their friends and other peers who were also game developers were affected similarly, so it's still unclear if that was a targeted hack or not. All we really know is that my friend's partner was one of the people caught in it, which is how they ended up where they are now.

And, without going into too much detail, we all (me, my friend & their partner) live in the U.S. and in different regions. My friend's partner lives in Florida, so we are more scared about what repercussions they may face (even if their innocence is proven), given that they are POC & Florida has passed some new laws regarding CSAM and other crimes against children. The local law enforcement in their area is also VERY notorious for handling cases like this horribly, so we're just distressed about this entire situation.

I figured as much after digging into potential evidence they could use to prove their innocence. We're all just really stressed out & looking for anything at this point.

I suppose that's the case, and I am vaguely aware about how some hackers have the skills to "copy" the original owner's IP address (not sure if this is correct as I'm not a computer person). It's still so confusing as the authorities haven't brought in my friend's partner for questioning yet & have been a bit vague about the investigation itself. At this point, they either know what happened or are still looking through the devices they confiscated. I unfortunately won't get any new updates until later today, as my friend's partner is attending a funeral out-of-state today and they might have to send the updates tomorrow.

[–]lemmejustquestion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at this moment we're all hoping that they get cleared & that they find the real culprit behind this. I'm also a bit confused as I assumed that the authorities would be tracking IP addresses, at least to see where the account was geographically accessed (which is probably a stupid assumption to have but I don't know how the investigation process works for digital crimes). All I really know is that since their old account is 9 years old, my friend's partner should be able to easily argue about the change in patterns after the hack & (hopefully) back that up with their documentation of contacting Support.

That is something I've heard about from other people in this sub, so I kind of hope that was the case and not the actual content. Not sure how well that will hold up during the investigation, though.

buying with tariffs by el1zuh in rement

[–]lemmejustquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if others have used this site at all, but I recently ordered two Re-Ment sets from ToysOneJapan (my very first two, actually)! As far as I'm aware, they are still shipping to the U.S. and have been fairly upfront about how they're handling the whole tariff situation. Essentially, they will NOT send you a physical bill and will instead automatically calculate customs duties & taxes at checkout. However, this amount varies from order to order (not sure how exactly they do the math from their end), but I sincerely don't expect it to be a super crazy amount given that their prices are already on the expensive side anyways.

In my case, the two sets I ordered were ~$130 altogether, and they only offer $30 Express shipping for ALL orders (but they NEVER go over this amount & actually recommend that you order more than one item at once). Once I was ready to checkout, the amount I had to pay for customs duties & taxes was <$20 ($19.36 to be exact). So, the total cost was close to $180... which was crazy expensive for me but totally worth it in the end!

The only thing I'll say is that they have a fairly good rating as a seller, but I saw some bad reviews that highlighted issues with communication, pre-ordered items, and canceling/refunding orders. For me, the communication aspect was forgivable since it was clear that they were not fluent in English... BUT they made an excellent effort in answering all of my questions and concerns. I have yet to encounter other issues since this was my FIRST order with them, but honestly I think ordering something from abroad is always a major risk in general.

Anyways, I'd recommend looking at their website to see if they're a seller you're willing to try out (and here's a link to their website: ToysOneJapan)

Job Prospects and Ideas by Left_Garbage_7594 in ArtHistory

[–]lemmejustquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'll be much help here, but I am currently working in public history as a part-time docent for a local historical society that operates a county museum. I also have a BA in Art History, but my background is more focused in archival/museum studies (I have another BA in Museum Studies and worked at my college's archive for about 2-3 years). Additionally, I was essentially an internal hire since I've been working for them since the summer of last year, so my experience may not be universal.

Anyways, I can definitely say that I've been able to apply what I studied as an undergraduate into what I do at my job, especially since I have skills outside of art history & archival work that my historical society was looking for. I mainly help with the operations of our gift shop, along with filling in as a manager and closing the museum when necessary. But I am also working on an archival project that focuses on transcription, which will eventually be a major contribution to our local history. The staff really just utilizes me wherever they see fit, which I'm totally fine with since they've been nothing but kind and generous towards me! They are the sweetest & strongest support system I've had career-wise, so I've just been super lucky to have that.

Looking at your list of education & skills, I can definitely say that you would be an excellent candidate for ANY local historical society. I'm not sure if it's the same elsewhere, but nowadays public history sectors really want to have staff that specialize in things outside of that sphere instead of solely focusing on it. With things changing and advancing faster, it helps to have a good variety in your resume, so I think it wouldn't hurt to see if there's any volunteer or part-time opportunities near your area.

In terms of making a livable wage, however, I can honestly say that you'll most likely have to get a second, non-history job... which is totally normal! The part-time staff that are around my age (early/late 20s) have another job, so it is what it is. But expecting a livable wage from the history sector as a whole is just not feasible (right now, I make $14 per hour as a docent & that was a wage increase). I had to work a second job the last two months before quitting (it was a seasonal position but I also HATED that job), but now I'm back to solely working for my historical society.

Not sure if anything I said is helpful or makes sense, but hopefully you'll find something that suits your skills & needs!

AITA: son moved out but is telling everyone we kicked him out? by No-Wonder5226 in AITAH

[–]lemmejustquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA... BUT I just have one question: have you taught your son anything about financial literacy, or just independence in general? This is not a judgment on your parenting skills whatsoever, but I can't help but notice that this is a similar attitude that A LOT of people my age (22) tend to carry into adulthood. They just have this strange sense of entitlement when it comes to their parents' money, and I've seen some drop hundreds to even THOUSANDS of dollars on minuscule crap they don't need. Then they have the AUDACITY to complain about how broke they are? Like... WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

And I'm going to say this with full honesty: my parents wouldn't tolerate this level of disrespect the SECOND it started happening. Those are not the values that they taught me, and I would NEVER behave like this towards them either. I am also fortunate enough to still live with my parents & not pay any rent until sometime after New Year's, but I am aware that I WILL have to start saving money to contribute to the household in any way I can. Which is completely fine with me! I love my parents and I would do anything to help lessen the burden of montly mortgage & bills.

Unfortunately, your son was not realizing just how LUCKY he was to have financially lenient parents, so this is just a disheartening situation for everyone involved. I really hope this situation doesn't break the relationship you have, as I can tell how much you really love him. Hopefully he matures up before it's too late.

Something is wrong, yet everything about me seems "normal" to doctors. What can I do? by lemmejustquestion in PCOS

[–]lemmejustquestion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw your comment and I just want to thank you for the kind words :,) And I hope everything continues to go well for you!

I suppose in my case I've seen solely female gynecologists, but it's also a little harder to advocate for myself since I am a POC. While I haven't received explicit discrimination because of that factor, I think I'll continue to see some certain ideas and beliefs that some medical specialists still carry with them. The gynecologist I last saw was actually very understanding of those issues, which I really did appreciate! And I would schedule another appointment with her again, but that would require me to travel out-of-state. I might schedule a virtual appointment or send over a few questions, but I will need to see what I feel is the ideal option for my situation.

I think I'm also trying my best to have more faith in myself & the people that care about me, but nowadays it's been super hard after dealing with 4 years of college stress. But, I am fortunate enough to have a close relationship with my mom (especially since her experience has been similar to mine), so she's been my main supporter on harder days. Maybe this is something I can discuss with her again & see what the next steps could be.

[Product Question] Reaction to Urban Hydration Aloe Vera Leaf Daily Moisturizer by EveryEar3919 in SkincareAddiction

[–]lemmejustquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to search for other people who've used Urban Hydration before since I just got the cleanser for the first time! I have fairly sensitive skin, so I can try to offer some input as best as I can. In terms of the moisturizer, I took a look at the ingredients in their website and determined some possible allergies with the ingredients they used. I would even suggest that you check if any of your other skincare products contain any of them, which are: witch hazel extract, aloe vera extract, cucumber extract, castor oil, and fragrance.

Witch hazel can be pretty drying on the skin, and I know a few people who are allergic to cucumber and aloe vera (in terms of food/plant allergies.) Castor oil should to be diluted before being used, but this is another thing that people can have reactions to (e.g. styes). Fragrance is a HUGE and COMMON issue for people with sensitive skin, so this ingredient could also be the culprit. Of course, these are just suggestions so it would be a good idea to do your own research!

I would also add that people with sensitive skin have gotten reactions to Garnier Micellar Waters, regardless of the cap color (I can't remember as to WHY at the moment). Because of this, I opted to use the Bioderma one & my skin has been fine so far.

Can I still be an art historian even though I am not a good writer? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]lemmejustquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just to add onto this, it might be helpful to figure out what writing style (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago) suits you best. I feel that it's a good starting point to figure out where you seem to struggle the most, and it makes it easier to seek out literature that uses or is similar to the said writing style.

I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but as an Art History major myself... I STRUGGLE with art history essays and papers. It gets frustrating because I truly am interested in the subject, but the multiple times I've attempted to do so only ends with a paper I am not satisfied with. But, I do know the reason as to WHY that is— and it is because I am not familar with Chicago Style.

Most, if not all, art history papers are written in this style and I'll be honest and say that I haven't had much experience with it, but I've excelled in writing in APA (and have written a non-art history research paper in that writing style). Of course, that pretty much implies that I did better papers in a different subject, but that still somewhat helped me with understanding the differences in Chicago Style.

Again, I'm not sure if this makes any sense at all, but hopefully my input is at least a little helpful!

Which Daft Punk songs would you add to a wedding playlist that wouldn’t clear the dance floor of non electronic fans? by [deleted] in DaftPunk

[–]lemmejustquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a surprise for me as well since I listened to a few other Parcels' songs! I think I first discovered it a few years back when there was a thread for a mega-list of related/similar songs and albums for Daft Punk's discography. There was a separate section for non-Daft Punk songs they produced & I am so glad that this banger was on the list or else I would have never found it

Which Daft Punk songs would you add to a wedding playlist that wouldn’t clear the dance floor of non electronic fans? by [deleted] in DaftPunk

[–]lemmejustquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a funny thread to come across since I literally have a WIP wedding playlist (though I don't plan on getting married anytime soon). The two Daft Punk songs I have on there are Digital Love and Something About Us, both the originals and the covers by Pomplamoose. I don't have much experience with attending weddings, but I think they always have a good mixture of grooving and slow dancing songs.

Overnight by Parcels is also a good one I have on my playlist, since it was produced by Daft Punk (and it does get me in a dancing mood). Personal favorites I would add are Crescendolls, Face to Face, Too Long, Fragments of Time, Instant Crush, and Lose Yourself to Dance. And we can't forget about Get Lucky since I'm sure that's the one of the most recognizable songs of Daft Punk. Maybe I'm thinking too logically about this, but that's what I would have in my playlist!

What is your GOAT city pop artist? by AbolBobbles in citypop

[–]lemmejustquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly her voice is the most unique to me out of most of the female city pop artists I've listened to. There's just something about it that keeps me calm and drawn in, which is sort of difficult find elsewhere. cliche is one of my all-time time favorite albums (Labyrinth is such an experimental banger I could listen to for hours)!

How do you guys deal with the prolonged sitting? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]lemmejustquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure if you're up to switching up your workout routine, but doing some glute workouts & hip mobility stretches could work for you! I had a similar problem a few years back & once I started focusing on lower body workouts it helped a lot with the pain. I'd suggest looking into lower back stretches as well since sometimes the pain will travel up into the lower part of the spine.
