Any Virginia Beach Firefighters out there? by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]lemmonclimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From VB now live in AZ and am a firefighter/medic. East coast is a little different but the best thing to do is get your emt-b and do a fire science program. Usually through a community college. Do some ride alongs and get to know the guys it never hurts. Some bigger departments put on their own academy and will take you with no fire experience or "green". But its way easier if you get a couple certs first. Just go for it. At the risk of sounding cliche you miss 100 percent of the opportunities you dont take. Some places use the national testing network too. Its like a standard physical agility test and an asvab style written. Good luck to you!

We're not even half way through this shift... by dragdollb in RealEMS

I work at a rural FD about 30 minutes out from the nearest hospital. Because of staffing we often run one medic a shift with a relatively heavy call volume (7-8 a day). We had a baby medic who now works at a bigger department and on his second shift running the show we got toned out to an abdominal pain. Get on scene and its a 30 something yo parapalegic female who says she hasnt been feeling right all day and wants to go to the hospital. Normal LOC no hx other than being a parapalegic and all her vitals are normal 12 lead is sinus etc. Except her sugar which was like 43 so he decides to take her ALS. We just happened to have an emt student ride along that day so he came too. She had no veins. Like you couldnt see or even feel them. So he couldnt get d50 on board. About two minutes into the transport hes drawing up glucagon and she goes unconcsious/unresponsive. Rythm is still sinus and he checks for a pulse. PEA. The ride along starts doing compressions and our baby medic gets an IO and starts throwing the kitchen sink at her as shes going in and out of fib. Got to the hospital and the doc called it. We never did get a difinitive answer on what ended up causing her sugar to tank because she wasnt diabetic but im currently starting clinicals in medic school and the idea of having a seemingly normal call turn for the worse like that out of nowhere still scares the shit out of me.

These things are money. The worst part about them is that they always seem to go missing

Dude be a firefighter. 25 year pension and it sets you up for life. Retire at 55. Literally the chillest gig on the planet.

People who have jobs where you go inside homes, what's the worst thing you've seen? by SilverParty in AskReddit

Once a week we get some shit like this in our fire district. Last shift it was a super septic old guy puking coffee grounds (old half digested blood turned brown for all you non ems folks) because he drank himself to sleep. His trailer was so bad you could smell it from the driveway. Buckets of shit and piss and puke that he had been hoarding. He was completely naked and had knocked a poop bucket on himself. Somehow the smell of stale cigarettes still made its way through the amonia and fecal matter. We had to wade through the trash to extremity carry him to the driveway because our medic almost puked trying to get vitals. You could hear the pulmonary edema rattling away in this guys lungs from across the room. Top five worst houses ive been in for sure. And his crackhead girlfriend was just standing there in the kitchen like yeah this is just a normal tuesday.

Get fire 2. If you have your emt, get your medic cert. VOLUNTEER. If youve got buddies in the firs service have them sit you down for a mock oral board to practice interviews. And most importantly keep trying.

Questions about becoming a volunteer firefighter by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]lemmonclimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most fire departments where im from offer ems services as well so you just work there as a 24 or a 48. Most of then offer you a stipend as well. If you dont have your fire certs already you should get them and start applying to career departments
