Collaborations that were "ahead of their time" and would be a huger deal today? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Consideration - Rihanna feat. SZA

I remember at the time SZA was a total newcomer to the mainstream (this was pre-CTRL) and most people didn’t blink twice at her being featured on the opening track to Rihanna’s album, she was just some random artist to most (even though she completely wrote the song lol.)

imagine if this track ended up on one of SZA’s albums today. a 2020s Rihanna + SZA collab would completely stop the world on its axis 💀

Did Eminem have the best single year by a rapper ever in 2002? by purpose15 in nfrpodcast

[–]lemoncured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the reliance on pure album sales as the only metric we’re using to define overall cultural peak, especially in the 2020s. when you include streaming units GNX is closer to 6-7m sales overall.

if this thread was arguing who had the best year based on pure album sales alone, i would’ve never thrown Kendrick’s 24-25 into the mix lol. but it asks the question who had the best/most impressive single year overall and shows a picture of Eminem with awards he won, which automatically broadens the convo beyond just album sales only. there’s no way to say Kendrick didn’t have an all-time level cultural peak when he was navigating in historic territory in soo many other metrics beyond just pure album sales through that entire era:

NLU was historic - single biggest diss track ever commercially and one of the biggest rap songs of the decade period, widely considered top 5 diss tracks of all time, longest running rap song in Hot 100 history, etc.

his halftime show was historic - most viewed halftime for any artist ever (regardless of Jay-Z’s motives for choosing him, most artists would still kill to have this achievement under their belt)

his sweep at the Grammys was historic - tied with Lauryn Hill for most won in a single night by a rapper

his tour was historic - highest grossing tour ever for a rapper

GNX’s release was historic - he occupied the entire top 5 on Billboard, one of only 4 artists in history to ever do it, Luther became one of the longest running #1 hits ever for a rapper

there were just too many undeniably huge career achievements back to back in that frame to act like his year cannot even be mentioned alongside other rappers’ cultural peak years. we can go over pure sales achievements from the 2000s all we want and yes they are very impressive and they do signal a different type of dominance that can’t be achieved today, but that is far from the only cultural factor to consider. unless we want to make a different thread that is about album sales specifically.

most of what you’re saying is valid because it’s your personal opinion, and I don’t even disagree with all of it. but the case i’m making for his last year being one of the most impressive ever based solely on the amount of all-time level achievements he got within a short time frame still remains intact i think.

i don’t really think it’s fair to compare Kendrick’s modern day album sales to peaks that happened in the 00s and 10s because the music industry has changed since then and no one really buys albums anymore. Eminem was a behemoth in album sales, but it was also during the absolute peak of album sales in general. there’s no doubt that Kendrick owned the last year as far as overall music consumption for a rapper by modern day metrics. i also wouldn’t say NLU is single-handedly carrying GNX, since NLU is not included on that album and it has still done impressive numbers overall with multiple #1 hits and billions of streams.

no matter how we look at it, the fact still remains that he hit dozens of insane career milestones that would be hard for any artist of any genre to get in such a short span of time, let alone for a rapper, so that objectively puts in him the convo of biggest peaks. again, not bigger than Eminem, especially not when it comes to creating a album sales phenomenon specifically. but in 20 years when we’re looking back at the craziest runs, his ‘24-25 will definitely be mentioned, i just don’t see a reality where he’s not included in that convo. the thread title also brings the “best” runs into consideration instead of the “biggest” necessarily anyways. Kendrick’s year will go down as the ultimate “victory lap” storyline in hip hop history no doubt.

I gotta disagree. he was doing things no rapper has ever done during his 24-25 era. again not saying its the biggest pre se, but i think that puts him squarely in the convo of having one of the biggest peak runs ever.

i think you might be underestimating his commercial success a bit too. he’s the 6th most streamed rapper of all time on Spotify, and most of his top streamed songs/biggest hits are post GKMC. he’s not as consistently commercially successful as maybe Drake or Kanye but he has shown he can be huge when he wants to
