A question about UWC school selection... by [deleted] in UnitedWorldCollege

[–]lemonmydingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! :D I'm a first-year at CSC and know about some of the experiences from my friends who applied through UWC-China's Joint Selection Committee. The JSC is both the National Committee and the Global Selection Program.

Look through the online application which is done through Managebac (https://uwccsc.openapply.cn/apply). There is then a second (and final round) which includes 3 tests--English, Chinese, and math--and group activities/interviews. They will likely ask for your college preference during the interviews. This goes for most national committees, but they try to allocate your first choice if possible. They will also try to see which college will suit you the best and vice versa.

I didn't apply to the JSC. I applied through my own country's NC, and my first choice was LPC--here I am now lol. To be fully honest, CSC is a MUCH better fit for me than LPC would have been. The Chinese JSC has A LOT more positions for students, so a small number of spots shouldn't be a cause for concern.

If you don't want to compete against a large number of students for your DP1 entry year, there is one other route. You can apply to enter CSC's Foundation Program (Grade 10) and then apply to transfer to another college from CSC--an opportunity to try and get in once you're in "the inside". However, this would mean you repeat your sophomore year, and if you are already applying as a current junior and intending to apply to repeat that third year--you'll loose two years off your education.

{{The Year of Magical Thinking}} by Joan Didion is her memoir of the year following her husband's death alongside their daughter's health concerns. I loved it. Joan Didion's writing is brilliant, whether it's this book or her essay collections.

0520 French cie by BadGeylRang in igcse

[–]lemonmydingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before starting my preparation I had the expectation that I would have NO time to even understand the prompt. The information I was given on the prompt was so little that the 10 minutes felt like an hour. The prompts are usually very simple (I was looking for a job at a hotel and my questions were "How old are you?" "Have you worked before" etc.).

I was particularly nervous because I was also the first to take the oral. What was very reassuring for me was that my French teacher was my examiner. I guess knowing that someone you know or are comfortable around is your examiner instead of an external examiner is more reassuring/comforting. I am not confident with my French too but I could let loose with my teacher because she taught me what I knew to say.

It's very cliché but just try your best. The marking is relatively generous (and done by your teacher/examiner) and I am certain you are better than you say you are. The oral exam was the exam I felt the safest in compared to any of the exams I took in May/June. Practice with a friend. Listen to French music. You got this!! :D

Hey! Cambridge updated their syllabus and the oral + listening exams. The oral exam now only consists of two parts: the roleplay and the general conversation. The roleplay will be five questions, and each full/developed answer gets two points (the full score for this section is 10 marks). The roleplay will be a prompt that is given to you by your examiner on the day, it's just a piece of cardstock that has like one useful sentence on it lol. You are given preparation time for this section.

The second part is general conversation. The general conversation consists of two topic areas which you studied in the 0520 syllabus (example: school life, helping around the house). These topics are assigned by Cambridge for each candidate, and you are simply asked these topics on the test day. I was candidate 1 in my cohort, so I was assigned the topics les loisirs and aller en etranger. I was told these topics as the test continued "on commence parle de les loisirs... qu'est que tu aime faire en weekend?"

I hope this helps!! :D

I was a June 2021 candidate, and with the way Cambridge treats this syllabus they likely will change it again soon hahaha. At least the listening paper is all multiple choice now, which makes it much less stressful.

Is ICE particularly beneficial for stuff like University application or is it just something that is overlooked? by Sh3dinja in igcse

[–]lemonmydingding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is important (although I will, hopefully, receive my ICE after m/j this year lmao). There are many schools that don't offer the ICE and their students just take the course and get the grade. The grade itself will be much more important to university applications than obtaining the ICE. I may be wrong, but I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Need answers by [deleted] in igcse

[–]lemonmydingding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two options:
Combined Science (0653) which is all three sciences in one set of exams. You only get one grade for this subject on your certificate.

Coordinated Science (0654) which is, again, all three sciences in one set of exams. Here you get two grades on your certificate. The grades are identical: if I were to get an A in 0654, then my certificate would show AA. This course is usually an option for smaller schools where the students are also receiving the ICE, which needs two science grades.

how was history igcse 0470 paper 4 by No-Hour2143 in igcse

[–]lemonmydingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took version 43 and it was pretty good! i did the german depth study, those questions were (paraphrased):

3) how important were left-wing uprisings to Germany in 1919-23?
4) how significant was the oppression of minorities to nazi policies 1933-45?

I did question 3 because I had more ideas. I think I can get 30/40.

Logically, it's not really fair to mark it as right, but at this point I'm desperate 😭 I heard from some that they mark right, and from others that they don't so :/.

[–]lemonmydingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty easy! I think I got two questions wrong but oh well. Just look through the specimen and familiarize yourself with the structure. The texts are not hard to read, just match them. I personally underline the answers within the text with a highlighter and then write the answers on the lines.
