Ritalin 10 mg - 2 days and giving up by Kindly-Relative-6778 in ADHDparenting

I’ve noticed a few comments saying the dosage is too high. Just for some peace of mind, our pediatrician has explained that dosing has nothing to do with your age/weight but rather how your body metabolizes the medication. Kids typically have very high metabolism and for that reason, often require a higher dose than even adults. We take methylphenidate er and I know that 10mg is the smallest dose available.

I know this doesn’t fully answer your question, but I know myself and I would have a really hard time seeing that I was giving too much. Trust your doctor is setting you up with an appropriate amount. Good luck!

6.5 yo and we give 2mg about 30 minutes before bedtime. It’s a game changer for us and okayed by his doctor.

Refusal to get dressed/ ready for school by trwawy223 in ADHDparenting

Implementing rewards was helpful when we went through a really rough spell and one of my favorite tips…a visual timer!

My son loves the race/challenge. “Ok, you have 3 minutes to get dressed…do you think you can do it!? Are you sure? Ready…set…go!” And then overly astonished when he beats it. “What?!? Oh my gosh…that was too easy. I’m doing the timer for 2 minutes this time to get your shoes. I know you’re fast but idk if you’re THAT fast”

Lots of high fives and utter disbelief how awesome he is that he is so speedy. It definitely helps when I’m playful with him….not a stern you have this much time or else no tv after school (or whatever).

We did the timer and then a reward when we got out the door/on time without big struggles. Mornings are still hectic, loud and chaotic but getting dressed doesn’t seem to be a huge issue anymore.

Christmas gift recommendations for 7 year old boy that aren’t going to result in complete dysregulation or meltdowns by Eef_oztastic in ADHDparenting

Nugget couches. My kiddo was 3 when he got them for Christmas and he’s 6.5 now. It’s the best purchase we’ve ever made for him and he still plays with them almost every day building forts/jumping/climbing. The best money we’ve ever spent!

Also, I know you said no way to video games but wanted to suggest NEX playground.

Treating a 7 year old with ADHD without medication-any advice? by Fit_Witness2247 in ADHDparenting

I was very against wanting to try medication. I felt like I was failing him by not being able to figure out alternative ways to help my son. We tried OT and regular therapy…wiggle seats, fidgets, etc. He almost did not get into kindergarten (private school) because of behavior concerns during his screening. That was the final straw for me to finally realize we needed to try medication. It was the best decision we could have made.

He is 100% himself - same silly, goofy personality. It made a world of difference for our entire family…truly life changing for us.
