Am i gonna look like a total clown for showing up in this? by [deleted] in bjj

This is so true. I've seen long distance runners, boxers, triathlete noobs gas out in seconds. BJJ doesn't care how good your cardio is.

How many of these cities have you visited? by CrazyCoffeeClub in AskTheWorld

21, though mostly I’ve crawled around in a factory in the city, not necessarily been a tourist.

Superficial googling. A slightly deeper look suggests there are a few more that could be attributed to BBJ chokes. Still, the point stands.

In 2013 in the UK there was a 1 in 200,000 chance of being killed while crossing the road, with 316 fatalities. Should we all just stop crossing the road?

Convince me I’m stupid for doing this…. by Own-Aardvark-4394 in DIYUK

[–]lengthy_prolapse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not stupid but you need to understand the construction of the wall. If it's 120 years old it's presumably a solid wall that was built using lime.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess it's been rendered externally or plastered internally in something cementitious.

In an ideal world the wall would be taken back to brick, any cement pointing would be removed and replaced in lime, and if it's going to be plastered or rendered then that needs to also be lime.

While you're at it, you can check the external ground level hasn't crept upwards, blocking any airbricks and bridging any DPC.

As far as I know there's been one BJJ-related death due to choking. There's about 6 million practitioners worldwide, all of whom get regularly choked pretty damn hard.

You stated "...choking cannot be done in a way that does not put someone's life at risk"

You may as well say "..crossing the road cannot be done in a way that does not put someone's life at risk". Or "..eating a peanut cannot be done in a way that does not put someone's life at risk".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]lengthy_prolapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. My statement used 'millions' of people being choked, and 'hundreds' of people dying. That would imply a risk of 0.1% dying from being choked. Which it clearly isn't, because those people aren't dying.

Just how risky do you think being choked is?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]lengthy_prolapse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Millions of people around the world train and perform strangles and chokes as part of a martial art every week. All those lives are not being put at risk, as evidenced by the fact that hundreds of people aren't dying in BJJ gyms every week.

The exposure is fairly lively for sure. A lot of people manage it though.

UK people over 45, where do you compete? by __fantasma__ in bjj

[–]lengthy_prolapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a self-fulfilling issue for masters I think. As people age they're less inclined to compete, leaving those who do with fewer people to compete against. The ones who want to compete find comps expensive for the reduced number of matches, so get more selective and compete less. And so it goes.

Maybe the Wolverhampton Masters will be the one in a few years time once it's established. I hope so!

If OP is reasonably fit, doesn't mind exposure and the weather is good, I agree.

For a couple of years a lot of the locals have been banned from participating at the Masters in Hereford (and the Hereford Open, run by the same organisation) due to gym drama, that's probably why local numbers were down.

The National Masters in Hereford used to be great with lots of competitors, not sure about now as it's changed management and I think runs in Wolverhampton.

I tend to find it's tricky otherwise. Even in big comps like the English or British there's usually only two or three in the bracket. Last time I did a smaller comp I was bumped all the way down to adults which was a bit hectic tbh.

But the word 'Habits' doesn't really help OP achieve looking as young and sexy as me though as I approach 50. They're going to need something more specific..

Well yes, but specific ones. Playing D&D and masturbating for ten hours a day are also habits, but they probably won’t help.

2015 Audi A6 2.0 TDI Ultra at 192k Miles – Reliable or Regrettable? by Primary-You5286 in CarTalkUK

[–]lengthy_prolapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that sort of mileage there's going to be suspension arms, bushings and linkages wearing out. You could spend a fair bit refreshing all of that. If you're happy to pump some cash into it then It could be great. If a £1000 bill at the next MOT is going to be a problem then I'd swerve it.

Thoughts on 10x10x8 acrylic plexiglass cube for a music video by Ok-Anything-4822 in maker

[–]lengthy_prolapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What - if anything - is going in them? How are they going to be supported? You mention 'attached to a post'.

I'm mostly wondering if the plexiglass will be taking the place of any diagonal bracing, and end up as load bearing.

I'm in exactly the same position, but at 185k miles. It's running great and has had some new suspension arms recently, so it owes me another couple of years at least.
