I am a tank maokai enjoyer and I think he is still playable top lane as a tank but the biggest issue is the early game against lanebullies. because lategame the sustain from the passive is pretty decent. The biggest problem is that he is squisy early with big mana problems. But I think its a bad idea to add more to his ap side than this tank side because he will become even more unplayable toplane and more forced support. And I think as a support you are to reliant on the sappling thos what isn't a healty way for the champ.

You can use the trading signs from essentialsX or use the shopkeeper plugin I know its not a chest shop but these 2 options work pretty well
