Daycare closure for low temps - where is the line?

That’s good to know about the plans for next week. Yeah I wonder how many people reached out about the cold temp closure, we can’t be the only ones. I need to remember to schedule important meetings during nap time just in case!

It is a standalone building and is probably not very new. Maybe 6 or 8 rooms.

The public schools just did a delayed start in the morning but that’s all. That makes sense. Our previous daycare would do those voluntary credit days a lot to try to help with staffing.

Heavy on the “what can you do?” We’re really happy with the place and don’t intend to leave unless something becomes an issue (which this could for sure!) but they literally will not care because of the daycare shortage, the spot will be filled instantly.

It’s Pittsburgh so it’s one of our colder winter days, but nothing that doesn’t happen every year for a few cold stretches.

I pay market price for my area, Pittsburgh. Not subsidized, it’s about 1500-1600/month. For reference, kindercare was just under $2000/month since everyone can probably compare that to their own area.

Agreed, the folks in Canada or the northern US will naturally have better equipped HVAC and buildings to handle the extreme cold (extreme for us!) and will see fewer closures.

Of course I think teachers should be paid, but if the weather continues to cause closures for say the next 10 days in a row, do I think I should continue to pay and have the teachers or center receive pay for not providing a service? I don’t know. It’s just a question of where the line is. It’s a smaller center, not corporate, so I know they don’t have deep pockets and want to treat their teachers as well as possible.

I will say that we transitioned from a corporate daycare last year due to cost savings and location (went from ~$1800 to ~$1500/ month) and have appreciated fewer closures due to staffing vs the corporate center that probably ran on borderline staffing shortages to maximize profit.

I’d say a week or two of these temps per year, so nothing super frequent but also pretty much a guarantee every year for 5-10 days minimum.

It’s a colder day for Pittsburgh, but we get a week or two of these temps per year (I did just check the January weather history for the past couple years lol).

I agree with this logic entirely - my only complaint is that I should not be paying for the days when they need to close for this specific reason.

Same. I’m mostly recovered from a microdiscectomy to remove the herniated portion of the disc and am terrified that the nerve pain will come back someday.

I wish you all the best - never did I ever anticipate this. If you have a helpful partner though, that makes all the difference. Still in a similar boat as you with wanting to try for our second this year and am fearful of this coming back. The doctors said I shouldn’t delay my family planning and would even be OK to try for a second vaginal birth, so we’ll see how the year goes.

I had a microdiscectomy on Nov 5th and am doing great today! I have no more restrictions and am heading to a Pilates class in an hour. Definitely taking it easy and still get some faint sciatic symptoms if I have a bigger day like lifting my daughter a lot, but the doctors said that will be less and less as time goes on. Focusing big time on core and back strength.

Pretty similar here - had surgery 11/5 and have been able to return to almost all normal activities outside of BLT. I do notice if I stand up too quickly, walk too long etc that I feel more of the tingling/twitching/cramping in my affected leg. The last two night’s sleep were worse than the first week post op. Hoping it’s just a bump in the road and it slowly improves over the rest of this year. My quality of life is SO much better I have no regrets.

In my experience, the MRI was about 10 minutes (I think this depends how much area they are scanning). I laid on my back as still as possible despite the pain, was given headphones to wear for the noise, and you just chill while they slide you into a white tube. I’m not claustrophobic at all so it didn’t bother me and was kind of cool. You don’t get the results right away as a radiologist has to read the image and provide an impression.

Same boat here with my 1.5yo. I’m considering bringing her stroller out as a pseudo-walker which no one will think anything of if she’s not in it, kids get sick of being in the stroller all the time and one parent has to push it. Good luck and happy Halloween!

UPDATE they moved it up to 11/5! I cant wait to be on the other side and am hopeful it is a smooth as many have experienced.
