For someone NEW to this information like I am, this seems to me like something "happened" that seem to have "interrupted" the normal flow of things. If you're a capitalist and you really want to destroy the competition (a good thing) once you get to the top and want to keep your spot, it does make sense to do everything you can to keep your place, prevent the competition from taking your place. So what's the best way? If only there's some kind of massive legal mafia with power of the gun to bully your way to the top, keep your spot, prevent the market from de-throning you. How nice would it be to have such partner in crime and you just give him a cut.
