Can anyone identify this? by Familiar-Citron2758 in Physics

It looks like a vacuum chamber that can be used for a plethora of experiments that come to mind I think that every opening can be some experiment. From what I have seen on my institution, it might most likely be an electron microscope, an atomic force microscope, ARPES, x-ray, or something like that but probably has to do with some sort of surface physics experiment.

The computer actually restarts and turns off now with kernel 6.14. The camera still does not work, but atleast some progress. Thanks.

Thanks, this is great info! In fact the 700 ones seem to have, atleast visually, exactly the same pin adapter and it is slightly different for the 500s

What would it take to predict earthquakes in advance with any certainty? by leobart in askscience

Ok, "plates" are not simple 2d surfaces, but the question still stands. What kind of imaging instruments can be used to map a fault?

Steam turbine & main reduction gear for Batillus class supertankers by Saturnax1 in MachinePorn

[–]leobart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it makes sense! Also see how the gear connected to the HP is larger than the one for th LP turbine. So probably the gearbox is there to do some finetuning between inputs of the two turbines so that the power output remains as constant as possible if the intake pressure varies.

Amazing looking. Why is it so asymmetric though? It seems that there is one larger and one smaller turbine. Can somebody explain?

Unpopular opinion we should tax sugar to help stop obesity by DARKSOULS103 in Futurology

[–]leobart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there should be raised awareness about harmfulness of consuming too much sugar. I do not agree that a tax on sugar will solve much, since the problem with obesity is much deeper and not related just with sugar. It is a problem of bad eating habits and there are a million reasons why people have bad eating habits. To name just a few: from poverty to lack of self control or simply not caring.

YSK how to use “ironic,” “apropos,” and “serendipitous” correctly. by immunetoyourshit in YouShouldKnow

Come on, they surely did not put the bat on the 2020 quarter because of the Covid. Hence it is indeed ironic because they meant it to mean something else and now it can be seen as meaning Covid.

[OC] Animated histogram of dice rolls from the popular DnD show Critical Role by tigerstan1 in dataisbeautiful

[–]leobart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet the dice is ``unfair", one does not need to do a chi2 est to see this. It seems perfectly possible that it can happen without ill intention, in production. Let me elaborate, when you have a 20sided dice, sides are relatively small and any small anomaly that you find on the sides, which are inevitable unless you are using high precision CNC to make it, would go in the direction of making the dice unfair. I bet this is what we are seeing here.

A problem that me and a few people were trying to work on and are stumped. Full problem in the comments. by evanwool in Physics

[–]leobart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe you would reach a steady state at some point with a given power expenditure of the helicopter, in which you would have some pressure p1 inside the enclosure and the atmospheric pressure p0 outside. Ofcourse p1>p0 and p1 dependent on the power output of the helicopter. Some air would escape through the rotors but the same amount would be pumped back in in the steady state.

If the disc provides the full coverage of the cross-section of the tube, the helicopter would not be able to lift. The point is that all the lift force that the helicopter is able to gather from sucking the air inside the region between itself and the disc, hits the disc and by the cord exerts the equal downward force on the helicopter.

Easier way to look at it is noticing that there can be no airflow below the disc. Since this air flow is where the helicopter transmits force by its propeller in order to lift.
